Just looking for a little info for my son. He is currently a college student in Montana and would like to hunt deer this year if possible. My question is can he buy an over the counter buck tag still or does he have to draw a tag? Any info would be great. Thanks.

A discount on Montana?s big game combination license will be available Sept. 13 for nonresident college students to hunt in Montana.

The big game combination license includes conservation, fishing, upland game bird, deer and elk licenses.

Students eligible for the discount include:

The nonresident student must present a valid student identification card and an enrollment verification form from their school showing they are full-time students.

Former residents who are now full-time students at out-of-state colleges must present a valid student identification card, current enrollment verification form, a parent's Montana FWP ALS number and a copy of their Montana high school diploma or General Education Development degree.

Thanks for the info. Next question is where to go. I am not looking for a honey hole just somewhere to go up and enjoy a weekend hunting with my son. He would like to shoot a whitetail while he is up there. Is there much access for any whitetail hunting? He is living in Miles City but he has weekends off and would be willing to travel. Again thanks in advance for any info.

South of Miles City near Pumpkin Creek is a great spot with a large (6 mi. X 6 mi.) block of Public Land. I saw my largest muley buck ever 15 miles NE of Miles City aong the Frontage Road. There is alot of public ground around there also. My suggestion would be to purchase a land ownership map book for the area. They will be very helpful in finding access to public and private ground. Good luck!!
