LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-11 AT 02:39PM (MST)[p]well being 168 days from opening day its only natural for me and im sure others to start obsessing :) lol i understand how to use and how handy elk, antelope, whitetail, and november rutting muley decoys can be but what about early season mulies? a montana mule deer decoy is primarily used during the rut but can and how would you use one for bucks in september? no rattling no doe in heat just regular good ole doe p. has any one tried this and how well did it work? can you hold it and hide behind it for spot and stalk or still hunting? just to give them a silhouette of random dry ground foot steps instead of a bush that seems to be getting closer and is breathing lol? just trying to get an idea mostly for still hunting and hiking to viewpoints to glass. or would a decoy spook them as most of the nicer bucks run solo where i hunt. thanks

We have used decoys with deer in Sept, but its usually as a distraction or to give them a reason to stand up and not run off. Usually the shooter is in place before we show the decoy. I've tried to use it to break up my silouette when coming in from above with the sun at my back, But its hard to set it down and draw a bow at the same time.

I think a decoy would work great during the early season as a distractant or to cover movement when you don't have cover, but don't rule out the attractant part either.

im thinkin might figure out how to do it. Maby experiment a little during scouting with empty bow in hand. with the prices of tree stands coming and going might try that route to if i can find a good feeding site. am scared to death that there gunma control burn my area like they did right next to me ON OPENING WEEK!!! no warning! its all for the best But let a guy know so he can take his cams and blinds down.
