LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-06 AT 09:26PM (MST)[p]On a quick afternoon about a month ago, I came across this dead head with a shed laying right beside it. Rather odd.

Maybe it choked on that shed and died. The young bulls use them sheds as pacifiers when momma isn't home. That's why shed hunters spend so much time picking them up - to save lives. You don't see too many dead elk that have choked on sheds, so we must be doing a pretty darn good job. HEH?

The area is close to a throughway of sorts for quite a few elk; it does make plenty of sense for a spare dropped antler to be there. At least, that's what the map with my antler finds tells me.

Looks like a spring bull battle. Perhaps the elk was stabed by he other elk and sunk its antler deep into the other elk. Or perhaps the wandering elk decided to spar with the skull lying on the ground and loosened his shed.
