Raced back from a Wyoming elk hunt this week and was rewarded with the opportunity to take a respectable 3 x 3 on my property here in Tuolumne County. This is a “nonmigratory“ buck that has eluded me all season, preferring to stay on one of my neighbors property. This isn’t really a hard-core, get after it on public land, type of hunt. Rather, it’s just a selective harvest of a readily available resource. We have lots and lots of deer here… But very few big, mature bucks. Seems like once they hit four or five years of age they get pretty cagey and are usually nocturnal. In the 20+ years I’ve lived here I’ve only taken two deer on my property. I say to myself every season, “only shoot one that’s bigger than the last one you shot.” Well, this one met that criteria.
