Guessing that buck was already injured and in a weakened state for them to take him down. He could have been hit by a car, with internal damage or something of the sort.

i agree- maybe he was hit by a car... Or was he super tame or smetihng, like on a ranch with feeders... I can't see why he'd stick around just to be eaten.

These pictures have been around a little while and posted on several forums with lots of speculation.

Best explanation I've heard is that the buck was run to the point of exhaustion and just couldn't go anymore.
