CONTROLLED BURNS???

I THINK THEY COULD BE A GOOD THING IF:::

THEY WERE DONE AT THE RIGHT TIME OF YEAR!!!

THEY WERE CONTROLLED AND NOT TURN INTO UN-CONTROLLED BURNS!!!

THEY DIDN'T DO IT DURING BIG GAME SEASONS!!!

((( THEY BEING USFS!!!)))

I THINK SOME FIRE LINES BEING BURNT WOULD BE A GOOD THING FOR FUTURE FIRES BUT CAN IT PROPERLY BE DONE WITH AS MUCH DRY FUEL AS WE HAVE ON THE SOUTH SLOPE???

I DOUBT IT MYSELF!!!

THESE "FALL" TIME CONTROLLED BURNS THOUROULY PISS ME OFF!!!

THEY BURN FALL TIME FEED OFF THAT WILDLIFE DEPEND ON!!!

THE FEED DOESN'T GROW AGAIN TILL SPRING!!!

SEVERAL FALLS STOMPING AROUND HUNTING BREATHING SMOKE FROM CONTROLLED BURNS!!!

WTF???

JUST WONDERING WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS & EXPERIENCES HAVE BEEN???

AND RUS LETS HERE FROM YOU TOO!!!

MAYBE THEY DO IT DIFFERENT IN SOUTHERN UTAH???

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING WITH ALL THE FIRES THAT WILL HAPPEN THIS YEAR WE WON'T NEED TO START ANY CONTROLLED BURNS!!!

Bobcat,I agree with what you say. I would add that a controlled burn doesn't have to be very big. I think a whole bunch of 40 acre burns would be better than one huge one. Less of an impact on feed, like you mentioned. Burn different spots every year. Do it as a continuing management tool. I would also like to see some type of planting after a burn. Plants beneficial to wildlife.

It takes a lot of man power and money to make it happen. And you have to fight the nature fakers.

Logging can have the same benefit. I've seen it for many years here in Northern Kali. Even clear cut logging. But only in certain areas where erosion can be controlled. Very little erosion takes place if the proper proceedures are followed, water bars and such.

If we could dump the politics and let the wildlife managers do their job, what a difference it would make.

Eel

Bess, WTF?

You say they should burn when it is easier to 'control', yet you whine about when they do it in the fall. HELLO! Why do you think the do controlled burns in September? Think about it!

Controlled burns are a very effective wildlife management tool. Is certain situations logging/chaining are the best option, but in most cases controlled burns are the most effective.

I logged for 20 years in eastern Oregon and haven't seen a "controlled" burn yet that they didn't start till the fire precaution class was at least level 3. No wonder these burns get away from them. We have to shut off our saws at 1:00 for fire danger and they're starting fires on purpose.

They have to start them when they will get away otherwise how could they collect the kickbacks from all the fire fighting contractors ???

Like I've said before, there is no money in putting them out.

JB

I ask my family members that work for the USFS that very question. A controled burn becomes a out of control burn when it exceeds the prescribed size or requires more personel than was allocated for the burn. The "Greenville Bench" controlled burn has been burning for 2 months. It is only a few miles south east of the Milford flat fire. All of a sudden it's out of control as well.
As for the time of year that they do the burns, it is determined by the "Air Quality Index" "don't shoot the messenger". Anyway, usually the only time they can meet the air quality requirements is in the Spring & Fall.

They do alot of "burns" in the Indian Peak area and the result has been impressive ... lots of good wildlife habitat out there where there was none before.

What ever happened to the "railing projects"? They used to do tons of them but I haven't seen any for years. I suspect the enviromental groups put a stop to those as well.

RUS

JB, I think there is more truth to that statement than fiction. They make a ton of money in OT & hazard pay when they are on fires. Makes some of them "closet fire bugs".

Bessy, you are a funny cat. You whine like a girl, and when anyone dares call you out, you cry like a bi#%$. You are like Harry Reid, you complain and whine about EVERYTHING, yet you offer no solutions to ANYTHING. Get off your sorry ass and save the world since you are so much smarter than EVERYONE else. You cry about the lack of deer, you cry about the DNR and conservation groups doing something about it, you cry about giving hunters more opportunities, you cry that the government doesn't act exactly as you think it should. Is there anything in the world that is acceptable to you that you didn't think of first?

WTF?

hey PRO -blem solver police, do you just use that attack on everyone that dissagrees with you? Who really cares if he's just venting or if he's a problem solver. I did not see anyplace anywhere that says anything about solving problems. If you want problems solved, youre likely wasting your time on this board.

As for controlled burn, I think they now call them prescribed burns because they (USFS and BLM) realized that they can not really control wildfires as they once thought.

I think we more of them. I also think they should burn trees with torches during the winter. I they used flame throwers and torches they could selectively kill stands of threes without threat to taking out an entire forest system.

I don't know what guys are burning in the fall where you live. But up here in NW MT, what we burned in the fall was logging units. Burning the slash and piles left after the job was done, and you burn it in the fall because it needs to burn hot, and burn up the slash. Now spring was different, that is when we just did giant burns through the woods. I walked miles through the woods burning the understory, burning the douglas fir that nature should be burning a little at a time. We were the most aggressive burning district in the country. In fact, my fire boss "wrote the book" on fire.
You really need good guys at the top bobcat. Takes planning. you can't just go start lighting crap. I know there are lots of stories about FS guys letting things go so they can spend money. I never saw anything like that up here. Believe me, too much pride going to have one get out.
Never saw where feed was anything but enhanced by fire either. We have too much country here that a fire would cause animals to pack up and "move to town" for food. But again, I am not familiar with your landscapes.
Just relaying what I saw and know.
The only fire I know on our district that was a big fire caused by burning was the flat creek fire. It was caused by burning a slash pile the size of building in April or May. It cooked under there all summer, and then in Sept. the usual winds came up, blew the ash off the coals underneath and sparked it into some lodgepole pine, and off she went. Hard lesson learned there.

Minus your first paragraph, good post! My point is bessy rips everyone who disagrees with him on EVERY issue. I don't mind a debate, hell I enjoy them. I enjoy discussing issues with you, because you can support your stances with some logic, even though you are usually wrong.Bessy just rants and contibutes very little to most discussions. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I don't take what I say too serious, and neither should anyone on here.

Prescribed/controlled burns are very benifical for wildlife. Occasionally one gets out of hand, but to do nothing is worse. Fire is the way Mother Nature intended the land to resustain itself. The suppression of fires is one of the major reasons for the decline in habitat, along with developement and man-introduced non-native plants.

I concur Dahtaar,

Several years ago down here, a good blaze sparked up on the Henry Mt.
The next year... boom
the place was sproutin up everywhere, I had never seen such a pretty sight. Admittedly the conditions were perfect with good moisture following the fire.
In my opinion that event was the springboard the help catapult the Henrys toward its current status.

With warm weather, little to no logging, plus chaining gettin shut down around these parts, only stands to reason that the powder keg is dangerously growing.

Hey Bobcat I just put a little spit on the paper...that will regularly control an improper burn!

PRO I sure hope you never catch on fire, because nobody here would piss on you to put out the flames. Break out your dikcshunary you irascible pedantic imp. You have proven beyond doubt that you really are the integument of a rat's anus.

Maybe you should just return to the Korean Islands.

Your doltish dribble has upset my esteemed colleagues Mr. Bobcat and Mr. Russ. I will ambuscade and stymie everyone one of your thoroughly hebetudinous threads. You are as welcomed here as a yeast infection on prom night.

Explain again how we are occupying Europe, Japan, and Cuba? Dumb-ass. Or are you gonna run and hide under your life partner's skirt again? Let's hear it Mr. Brilliant!

It's nice to see all you dipwads sticking together and doing a circle jerk. You are good for a laugh anyhows.

If we are not occupying Europe, we are not occupying Iraq. Not sure what that has to do with controlled burns, but I guess when you have ADHD like you, what can one expect. I don't need to run and hide behind your mothers skirt, I sometimes get bored with all you self-smarts, so I sometimes just just let you pee all over yourselves w/o a response.

Relax fellas. I know its hotter than ____ outside and its making you all grumpy. This thread was about controlled burns. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean you need to personally attack them. Disagreements makes for a healthy debate.

The problem that I have noticed in southern and central Utah is that the cheet grass is absolutely killing everything. Cheet grass is the best kindling you can find. We need to find a way to burn it and then reseed the areas with something else. Obviously that's going to get very expensive. But how much does it cost for fire fighters to come from every other state and help us try and put these enormous fires out?? I am sure thats costing us a fortune. We need to stop these fires before they start. Obviously you can't stop every fire from happening, but there is alot we can do that we aren't doing. It's sad but in the past is has only been the sportsman that wanted to get rid of the cheet grass because the animals won't eat it and it's taking over. But now alot of people are in our same boat because of the fire hazards it also poses.

In the more dense areas like Bessys neck of the woods I think we need to do some major logging in certain areas. Most of the areas up there you can't see 10 feet in any direction. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but when it's dry like it is now that makes for one huge fire hazard.

Just my .02

Forthewall wrote: "What's wrong PRO can't seem focus, too jittery, can't seem to settle down and concentrate? So your a Union Rep eh? I'm amazed your union has grown weaker with such awesome and articulate representation."

Are you self-smart or what?

First, when did I say "my" Union has grown weaker? If it is weaker, it is not because of me. I am not ashamed of my success rate in grievences and getting management to 'see the light' w/o grieving issues, but hey, thanks for the concern for my fellow Local members welfare.

Second, all Unions are getting weaker because they have taken a socialistic approach to their methods and they alienate themselves from a large population of the country by being so cosey with the far-left and doing nothing but bad-mouth conservatives. It hard to go up to someone and ask them to join up when you attack the principles of that indivual. Utah is a right-to-work state, and when unions feel the need to attack the political party of the MAJORITY of the membership base, they shouldn't be surprised by declining membership numbers. I am a little stubborn, and seeing how my wages and benefits are dictated by the union, I have chosen to be involved in the policies and decisions made by those directly involved with my well-being. I do no get paid to be a union rep, but I do get calls from members outside of my arear for assistance,, so there are plenty who feel good having their career in my hands, I could care less what you think as a self-righteous ego-inflated windbag. I also have been, of all things, the committee chair for the Local Legislative Committee, where I am the ONLY conservative on the committee, making an attempt to 'balance' the stance the Local takes on political issues. Carry on with your rants and drivel about how wise you are, I could 'hang' with you in a debate, but mocking you and being corny and watching you vapor-lock is much more entertaining. Thanks!
