Choosing a new bow -- wow, what a process!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-01-07 AT 11:01AM (MST)[p]I'm thinking about buying a new bow and I decided I would check my ego at the door. I've always been a Matthews shooter starting with the MQ1 and switchd to an Outback three years ago.

All of the bows I tried were set at 70 # draw, 29 " draw.

I was pretty excited about the Drenalin and here are my thoughts. Nice shooting bow, a little bit of hand shock, very quiet, extremely lightweight. My concern, and this is a personal concern that will vary from person to person, is that it didn't have the typical Matthews draw. It seemed a little harder to pull than it should have.

I shot the Guardian and it is as advertised. Very quiet and the least amount of handshock of all the bows I tested. My concern was the short valley. It seemed it wanted to jump out of my hands. I shot it over thirty times because I lovd the lack of handshock, but I couldn't get comfortable with the short valley.

I then shot the Vectrix and Vectrix XL. In short they both shot the same except I liked the stability of the XL. Minimal handshock, slightly less than the Matthews, a little noiser than the rest of the bows. I loved the draw cycle and the valley was oh so sweet.

At this time I was favoring the Hoyt -- no small wonder for a Matthews shooter. All the ridicule I've received from Hoyt friends over the years resonated in my ears. So I decided to try the Switchback XT.

The Swithback XT had the sweet Matthews draw I've come to love. The valley was a little shallow but not as bad as the Guardian. I would have bought the Switchback XT but it simply did not have the speed the other bows had.... and try as I might I can't get the speed obsession out of my mind.

So, if I had to buy a new bow today it would be the Hoyt -- man, it's tough to type those words! :) I might just stay with my Outback -- hard to tell! It's like comparing Chevy, Ford and Dodge -- check your ego at the door and see what's best for you!

That is why a new potential owner should shoot them all and not be so stuck on a particular brand. The new bow owner has it better then ever to find the bow that really fits them.

do yourself a favor and shoot the vulcan.. I was going to buy the drenalin and when I went into the pro shop I looked at the drenalin and the vectrix and then the guy at the shop suggested I try the vulcan.. it was awesome.. crisper and faster than the vectrix and the switchback... great bow

Dont be afraid to look at some other brands as well. I shopped around and the Bowtech Diamond line seemed to fit my shooting style and my budget.

Bowtech is a great bow also.. my brother owns one and it is a great bow..

Hey chukar, did the Vectrix XL that you shot have the cam and 1/2 or the single cam? Is Hoyt even available with single cam still? I shoot a Mathews Switchback LD in a 31" draw and have been looking at some of the Hoyts because they are available in longer draws also. I dont plan on getting rid of my Switchback but I like to shoot several different bows.

Have any of you guys looked at the Ross bows?? Shot one the other day and man was it smooth. Ross is a smaller company, however they make one awsome bow. Sportsmans Warehouse is a Ross dealer, you should look hard at one of these.

you know, I havent shot one of the ross bows but I keep hearing good things about them.. I will have to shoot them..

I shot one last week and let me tell ya, it was about as smooth as you can get. I have an 05' Pse and I have always thought that it is a pretty smooth shootin' bow but it has nothin' on those Ross bows. I shot 2 of their models and both of them were quality. I might be sold on buying another new bow this year. I checked them out at Sportsman's, they are pretty good about letting people shooting their bows. Anyhow just my O2'

Hey man, I totally agree with checking your ego at the door. And being a Hoyt man myself, I think you made the right decision.....

Two companies you guys are going to hear a lot about in the near future is Elite Archery and Ross Archery. I'm ordering my 3rd Elite bow this week! I'm not a big fan of the single cam bows anymore, but Ross just came out with the "Cardiac" that's a single cam bow comparable to the Switchback, but comes with Winner's Choice strings, sealed bearings, and flawless craftsmanship---oh yeah, and about $150 cheaper than the Switchback!

I'd love to try out an Elite synergy, but alas, there are no dealers in my area. I emailed Elite to see if they'd sell me one with a credit card and give 3 days to return it if I didn't like it. No response. I guess I'll just have to wait for a dealer to open in Northern Utah. In the meantime, I sure love my guardian.

I currently have an E500 and a Synergy and they are both great bows. They just released the Envy this week, sounds like it's a flame thrower--355 fps!!!

Maybe its a good thing for my wallet there is not a dealer in my neck of the woods!
