LAST EDITED ON May-21-12 AT 10:30PM (MST)[p]How goes it,
Just checked the bank statement and found a $75 DWR charge, a lot of guys might get mad at me for saying this but I only had 2 points that I had attained by previously putting in for "Thousand Lakes" the past 2 years after drawing it back in 09'...this year now that Thousand Lakes is opened back up my 1st choice was Bookcliffs and 2nd choice was Elk-Ridge, for archery deer. I haven't received the confirmation email yet, so I'm left here sitting & wondering which one it actually is...and it's driving me crazy!!!

Don't go too crazy..... It's bookcliffs....... 2nd choices don't EVER come into play on LE...

Alright, thanks for the input...I've only drawn two LE tags in the past 12 years or so (Thousand Lakes deer & North San Rafael antelope) and on both of those occasions I never had a 2nd choice, so I'm pretty inexperienced in respect to the LE choices process...again, thanks for the response.

LAST EDITED ON May-21-12 AT 10:53PM (MST)[p]You will have a blast in the books....If I remember correctly you took your Antelope with a bow..... Is your bookcliff tag archery also? Opps just re-read your post it is archery...... Have fun scouting.

LAST EDITED ON May-21-12 AT 11:05PM (MST)[p]Thanks, but I'm kind of nervous...even though I'm relatively close to the area living here in Carbon County, I've never set foot in the Bookcliffs and have no clue where to even start scouting...any advice???

Head high in the oakbrush for archery. Good luck. There's some dandy's killed every year in the books with a bow

not true, could be either. When they draw they look at your first 2 choices based upon your draw #. They start with the guy with the lowest draw # and give the first choice. They work their way through the draw #'s and if the first choice is available you get that, if the first choice is not available they look at your 2nd choice and will give you that if available. It is always best to put a premium LE area as your first choice just in case you get a really low # in the draw and put your second one as a choice you would be happy to draw given the # of points you have. Utah's system is similar to AZ draw system.
I can't seem to find the link on the utah dow website describing the drawing process but it is there somewhere.

Have to butt in on this one. I like your thinkin ElkManDan, but I have asked this question here before about the way they do the draw. I have been told by several that 2nd choice is a why bother as they do not go thru all choices before moving on. I know for a fact that they do that here in Nevada. I can't seem to get a definate answer in the proclamations for Utah on how the actual draw process works, just goin by what everyone has told me and the fact that nobody that I have ever read has drawn their 2nd choice for a LE tag. I even called DWR once and never got a definate answer. Lots of guys on here goin crazy about 1st choice, 2nd choice. You may be right, but I can honestly say I have never seen this in writing. Someone please show me. Bet it doesn't happen.

Now I'm going to have to look it up again. I was doing a lot of research at the time about AZ and Utah when I moved here. Maybe I got it mixed up but I am pretty sure that I have it right. I even contacted DWR and got a detailed e-mail response back. I'll have to go back and see if I still have it.

How about a non-scientific POLL. Has anyone on MM ever drawn a limited entry tag as a SECOND CHOICE???

I asked Amy here on MM this very question a couple of months ago. I was told that 2nd choices are not considered until after all 1st choices are gone through. So if there are any tags remaining in an area after all of the first choices have been considered, then they will consider second choices. I was told that a 2nd choice on a LE unit is pretty much useless.

I too had contacted a rep. at the division before talking to AMY and was told that 2nd choices are given draw numbers, but AMY said that is not true and that if I knew the name of the person I had talked to, it would be corrected.

Can't find it and I can't find anywhere that it says they look at 2nd choice so I must be confusing it with how AZ does their draw! Crap, no wonder why I didn't draw :-(

Here is AMY's actual reply:

Thanks for your question, carbonnation. I'm really glad you sent it over. I followed up with one of our customer service specialists here in Salt Lake, and the person you spoke with yesterday was incorrect. In the case of the LE hunts, first choices are considered before second choices. It's very rare that a second choice will be drawn. It won't really hurt you to list a second choice for a LE hunt; it's just unlikely that you'll draw it.

Do you know who you spoke with yesterday, and are you comfortable sharing that person's name? We want to follow up internally and make sure our customer service staffers are sharing accurate information with the public. Also, if you have any further questions about how the process works, the gentleman I checked with this morning said you were welcome to call him. His name is Bryan Christensen, and his desk number is 801-538-4844.

LAST EDITED ON May-22-12 AT 10:12PM (MST)[p]Sorry Elkmandan... your wrong with Utah's system but other states do consider your other choices. In Utah, the ONLY way you would EVER draw your second choice is if a LE hunt when under subscribed round one and you had it as your second choice and no one else did. Not only is it 'UNLIKELY' as Amy said, the Bookcliffs has never gone under-subscribed. I bet if a guy when backed and looked at all the LE deer units and including CWMUs you would find less than a dozen total LE deer permits that went under-subscribed.

I finally found the e-mail and it was clarifying Res and Non-res putting in on the same ap. Looks like I was definitely confusing UT draw system with AZ draw system where they have the bonus choice pass and then first and second choice pass.

Thanks for all of the responses thus far, I feel pretty confident now in knowing which unit I'll be hunting come this August...once more I appreciate the help guys.

UT-second choice is useless for LE. They go through everyone's 1st choice first.

AZ-second choice is good. They look at your 1st choice and then your second choice before moving onto the next applicant. The bonus pass and regular draw (know as the 1-2 pass because they look at your 1st and 2nd choice at the same time) are a separate issue entirely. They are separate draw runs. Bonus pass awards 20% of tags to applicants in a given hunt code (with some quirks for sheep) with most bonus points. Regular draw checks everyone else for remaining 80% of tags. They look at both your 1st and 2nd choice in both the bonus pass and regular draw before moving on to the next applicant.

NM- Your 1st,2nd, and 3rd choice are looked at before the next application is looked at. 3 valid choices. My son actually drew a Rocky Mtn Bighorn Sheep ram tag on his 3rd choice...
