I have a couple of students that are using a dremel drill to carve into some elk antlers for our elk students of the month program. Would any of you know of ill effects from the shavings and/or the nasty odor? The place smells like a dentist drilling away on your teeth. They will probably start the face masks as a precaution. Thoughts?

I have done a lot of carving and grinding on antlers and have not noticed any ill effects. That being said, I have heard of people getting sick from breathing the dust when exposed to it day after day. I would advise wearing good face masks. And vaccuming the work area after work is done.

...I did find 4 antlers of different sorts today - Saturday. One okay 4 pt. deer, an odd 3 pt. elk, an old base of a deer horn, and a medium-sized, broken 6 pt. elk. Here's a couple of the pics:

I would use a mask just to keep the dust out of your lungs.

Post some pics of the carved antlers. Even if they aren't done.

I often deal with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)industrial hygiene related issues. Breathing any kind of particulate will eventually harm the lungs.

You first need to have each student "fit tested" for a 1/2-face respirator by a vendor (call Zee Medical Service at 888-225-5933) and they will set you up with their nearest testing and respirator salesperson.

Once each student is fit-tested and has a respirator properly fitted to them, you will need to equip each respirator with P-100 particulate filter cartridges. Ideally you would assign a respirator to each student and they would be responsible for them, including cleaning and maintenance.

Yes this will cost money, but it is worth it to avoid the potential health risk or potential future liability.
