I will be hunting west of Casper on some private land. I have no tent but I have a 28 ft 5th wheel. I live in Michigan. The way I figure it will cost me an additional $350-400 in fuel to pull a 5th wheel. Motels would cost $1500 plus for approximately a 2 week hunt. Wall tents $500 to $1000. I was looking at a Springbar or Kodiak canvas 10x10 tent in Cabelas. I thought about using a Mr Buddy heater if I go the tent route The tent I think would be great for future hunts where I couldnt take a 5th wheel. What are your thoughts and experiences on this. Thanks Brian

Both have their advantages.

I used to own a camper and plan on buying another one in the future. I sold the camper and bought a wall tent from Davis Tent. They have packages where you can get the cylinder stove and all for heat and cooking. I like the tent as it doesnt take much room, should last a long, long time and is fun to hunt and camp out of. The camper is great though for bad weather (your not packing up wet things) but is hard to get in to some places with. You can also bring the wife along when having the camper. I plan on getting another camper when the kids are out of the house.

Already owning the camper and with gas prices not as bad as they where a couple years ago you may want to just stay that route. If your looking for a long term purchase where you dont want to pull the large camper and some room and comforts buy a wall tent.

how many in tent? i would buy a bigger tent 14x16 it give you more room in bad weather you can have more room for stuff inside.have a 10x12 i would like a bigger one 14x20 or 14x16.with 2 people my is ok but kinda small if you have to put much in beside cots.depends how many in tent

I used a wood stove called the cylinder stove. When I bought the tent from Davis tents I purchased a package that came with the stove. I have a 14x16 tent and this stove heats it very well. Also with the warming tray and hot water heater its one of the best hunting/camping purchases I have made.

3 guys buy the 14x16 the little extra room will be welcome.

one thing no one has mentioned:
if your near casper, THE WIND WILL BLOW! honestly there is a good chance that while on your trip, the wind will NEVER stop blowing. i did an atelope hunt there 6 yrs ago and an elk hunt there 2 yrs ago. 1 thing is for sure, the wind will blow. if it's only going to be an extra $400.00 dollers for the 5th wheel? you might think about it.

we did do it in a wall tent and it was fine. but there were alot of times at night, we would have the tent flapping and the wind would blow right through the tent. just something to think about

Thanks Killerbee, I never even thought about the wind. It would definately be warmer in the 5th wheel. It is also real quick to set up. Is there many out of staters bringing 5th wheels to stay in out there?
