Can you find the truck?

Ok Sorry for another post, but I just finished my/son's hunting truck and thought I would share. It is a 1993 Ranger with 191k miles. It took me a week to finish as I had to paint door jams, fenders, engine compartment and put a bedliner in. If you see me/son around---stop and say Hi (if you can see us). If there is a woman driving DO NOT pull over as that will be my wife.

Well here is my way:

1. pulled off all molding, emblems, etc that I can
2. sanded, primed, painted all door jams, inside engine compartment, finder skirts, grill etc (this was cause this truck was red/orange and the everything else was gray and I thought flat black looked better
3. repaired all body dents with bondo and primed
4. started at the back and worked around the truck
5. I would prep each panel before I applied sheet by wiping it down with paint thinner to remove wax
6. Each sheet is 5'x4' so I would start at the top and peel 1" and line it up straight and then just keep peeling of the back and work it down. You have to slice the corners anywhere that is too tight of an angle.
7. When all finished I went back and cut out piece of leaves etc out of my left over and "hid" the joined section. I also took black silicon and caulked all the edges (anywhere I could not tuck it under a molding or seal). For me it was mostly around the window and finder skirts as I could not get them off. This should help keep the water out and keep it from peeling (this was my idea as they said it would not peel, but hey I am anal)
8. dropped in a $20 used bed liner

Matt I sure hope this helps.

Thanks, it looks pretty sweet on that truck! And the black fender flares really make it look that much better!

Nice setup!

Rangers are awesome trucks! I've got a special place in my heart for 'em. I drove one for years that had a 4" lift and the 4.0 liter V6, I tallied up over 380,000 hard miles on the sucker when the tranny began to go! That V6 was still running strong. Darn you make me wish I still had that truck!

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT STUFF????????

That's EXACTLY the kind of camo I wanted for my truck but didn't know they made it. Do they make a MossyOak style aswell? How much is it? Please let me know as my '79 RC would look SWEET with this stuff on it! Thanks!

Need2hunt,

That is the exact set-up yo are looking at--4"lift, 4.0 liter, but only 191,000 miles. It has been pretty good and I can get in just about anyplace. I just wished it had 4 doors. Oh well.

MichaelJ,

The pattern is Advantage 3D, but yes it comes in all of the Mossy Oak patterns, BUT they are very dark camos and I wanted some light. Also many of the camo patterns out there have a very distinct pattern and when you put them on a big area (like a truck) then they stand out. This one and a couple others, I thought were the best for this application. Here is the website, BUT you can buy them on eBay for about $100-$200 cheaper.

I hope this helps
Dean

PS the first is the brand I went with the second is another with a couple of other patterns.

Thanks man! Thinking of doing the King's Desert Shadow.... And ur right, something on the lighter side I think would look best.

MichaelJ,

Hey look at all the pictures on the second site I sent to you, as I believe there is a truck with the Kings Desert. I was going to do that one as well as I like the clothing, BUT it did not look as good on a truck. It had so much sage green in it. Look at it before you buy it, because some just do not look as good on a BIG surface, but I know there is a truck done it. I had seen a atv done in it and thought that is what I wanted--but not the case. The other one is the Mossy Oak desert--that is a new one they just added and that might look cool.

Anyway there is also this site that has camo trucks on it, and you might get some other ideas.

BearCat,

Again, sweet truck my compliments! You should have thousands of more trouble free miles to go on that bad boy. For reliability Rangers are perhaps the most under-rated compact truck out there and they can do some pretty decent wheeling to boot! Maintain them and they'll treat you right. I believe the only problem I had with mine was burning out a couple of starters...mainly my fault by not keeping the battery cables clean (was I just talking about maintenance).

nice bfg's but where is the truck?
if the bfg's came in camo you better take a gps reading when you park it.
nice wish my wife would let me do that to mine.
the company tuck will work good for snow camo it just has a lightning bolt in the snowstorm

Sweet looking rig!!! You did a great job! I saw a set of camo rims at Sportsman's Whorehouse that would look good on that.

Brian that is a good question. I thought the truck needed a bit more contrast with the black so I left it. But I am not sure if I like it black. I take it you do not? I can always do it, but wanted to try it this way.

Dean

Thanks

I got the camo seatcovers, but Iam not sure I want to spend much more on the old truck. Good idea however.

Dean

Man the snow camo is cool. I saw a range rover down in it and looked VERY good, But talk about only good for a short time. I also saw a snowmachine down and that was real cool as well.

Dean

Dean,

Not putting you down just can't figure out why you would go to so much work to cover a whole truck with this camo stuff. Was the paint job really that bad??
If so, yes it would be cheaper to do what you do instead of re-painting the truck.

Guess it is better than rust huh! Have to commend you for the time you put into the job and if I read right, your son must be pleased with the outcome and that is what is important.

Brian

Brian, no offense taken!!

Yeah the truck is 14 years old and it was a bright redish/orange color. Over the years and some fender benders some of the paint (most) was oxidized VERY bad and some was ok. I checked with a couple of paint places and they wanted $2,500 if I did all of the prep and body work (not many dents) and almost $4,000 to have it done. Keep in mind I was and never interested in doing something half fast so MACO was out of the question. I own a duck club and I thought hey it would help with the camo during the hunt, and it was only $600 if I did the work. So it will be mine for a couple of years till my son is ready for it, and then who knows if it will still be reliable. Trucks old, paints old--figure it was not worth a $4k paint job, but it is always good for hunting (close to town).

Not sure I would put that on my Superduty!!! It is a bit nicer and got to have one decent truck. I will try and find a photo and post it of what it looked like before.

Dean

Dean,
I went back to re-read the initial post and noticed that it is a 1993 so that makes the PU 13-14 years old.
Yes that is much cheaper than a good paint job for sure, since it had oxidized.

You have created a sight now and might have others want you to do their PU's. LOL

Brian

Wish my dad did that for me!
nice!
I love it when people show off that they hunt, you did it in dramatic fashion!!

I would have been the envy of every guy at my school with a truch like that! Looks great bud!

Again the truck looks great. Though I'm thinking about using the camo as a two-tone setup with my flat black that I already have. Here's a picture of my truck:

MJ,

I think a two tone would look great. Especially if you picked one with a fair amount of black in the pattern--say Mossy Oak breakup. I saw a Ford truck like yours (all black) and he just had the top in camo (hood, roof and then about 6" down the side) It looked very very cool. But on the ford there was a distinct transition line and on your there is not. You might think about doing the whole thing.

Dean

Well my son helped out a bit and we hope it will stick together for him.

I guess I do not show off I hunt on purpose, but at the same time WE can not be ashamed of what we do and love. Of course we have to be respectful of other people, BUT we should also be respectful of the animal we harvest.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-07 AT 09:03AM (MST)[p]I like your truck! I have done the same thing to my '72 Baja (Advantage Wetlands Camo). I started it about three years ago and finally got 'er done. I'm going to be doing a truck here soon (Advantage Max-1). Awesome job!

P.S. How do you insert pics on here? I have some pics of my bug for you all to take a look at. Thanks

Bearcat, were you at the hunting show in SLC. I saw a truck just like that parked on the west side of the convention center on saturday of the show.

looks good by the way.

elkantlers, yep you found me. That was the truck. I only could park there for 2 hours so my time was short, but I am glad you liked it!!

Dean

I believe I figured out how to post the pics. Here is my camo Baja Bug. Enjoy!

MuleyCrazed,

That looks so good. I love the window tint. I was thinking about that on mine as well--maybe later. I am sorry about not getting them up for you, but I have been traveling for work and just did not have the time. Once again I am sorry, but glad to see them!!

Not a problem. I was messing around with it last night and figured out how to post them, so I thought I would go ahead and do it myself so you din't have to. I really appreciate you offering to do that. Thanks.

And thanks for the compliment. It was hard getting all that on there, especially because it has so many curves on it. It turned out ok though. Camo Clad is great!

Again, great job on your truck! I love it!

Michael,

Did you ever do the camo on your truck? I think it would look awesome! Great job on the truck, looks great with the lift.

Drum

So is that the type of camo that changes depending on what terrain you are in?

Man that stuff is a pain to get off--$10 in quarters!!!

Dean

Bear, it was more like 15 dollars, and 45mins and it was still a fithy pig when I was done.
