Hi im heading on a mule deer hunt in 5 days. And my question is will the smell of campfire get me winded. Any info. might help to change my mind about the fire.

Thanks Mike

If they're smelling the camp fire smoke on you, then you're UP wind from them. As long as you stay DOWN wind from them, you'll be fine.

I've bowhunted critters for almost 30 years now and have never worried about campfires. In fact, some areas I hunt have been burnt in recent years and animals are used to the smell.

The only time I worry about campfires is if I set up my camp exactly where I'm hunting (backpacking in wilderness). Not for the smell per se, just the added attention a fire can bring to you from a wise ol' muley.

If your hunting is a away from your camp.....build a campfire at night and enjoy the peaceful therapy it can provide. Good luck and have fun.

Most animals have experience with the smell of wood snoke. Smells of cooking/cooked food, however, would probably send a message. Depends if it is common to that area or not.

Interesting topic. After about 2 or 3 days of busting your butt chasing bulls (or anything else) in the mountains and backpack...etc I smell worse than the Elk. You have to play the wind and if they are going to smell you it don't matter if you smell like fire and sweat...fire and crap....you are busted.

Great info...
I backpack hunt every year and yes you must play the wind. But, I also don't make a fire, because like has been said I will stink after several days in the bush. I figure I can tough it out and use a small stove to heat my water. The wind has ruined many a stalk for even the best hunters...
