Lucky, Nice Ca buck. Tell us the story. Are you a CBH member? You need to get that buck scored and entered in the Ca record book. If you aren't a member you get your first year membership free when you enter an animal. Let me know, I can hook you up with a measurer. Congrats. Ed F

My partners and had just split up on August 23rd about 7:00 a.m. after looking into some areas we had seen some bucks in pre-season. My partners told me they were going to walk the trail to the right and find a big dumb deer, Jokingly I laughed and said im going to the left trail and find a bigger dumb deer. They then laughed. I had only been walking about 3 min. and I saw this buck feeding under the canopy of a oak tree. At that point the buck immediately turned and looked away from me. That was odd I thought but quickly determined if I had a shot from where I was standing or not. The buck was quartering towards me. I was approximately 35 yards from him and would have had to kneel to shot. I decided that from that position, accompanied with another oak in front of me, I better reposition. Luckily the trail I was on had been heavily used so my stalk was almost silent. I walk almost 40 yards and during that time I knocked and arrow and locked on with my release. I was now eighteen yards broadside, and the buck did that cool hunch down, ears back and looked right at me at full draw. At this point it felt like my heart was going to pound out of my chest. I mentally told myself that this was just like the 3-D target in my back yard;exhale, find your spot and release. I did just that and watched the arrow hit its mark. The buck spun 180 and took off like it had not been shot. Standing there in what I call deer hunter shock, I heard my partners whistle. I started to walk towards the path that the buck left and found my arrow broke in half and out from behind two trees stepped my partners. I had know idea that they were stalking the same buck I was, and they had know idea that I was stalking from the other side of the buck. That explained why the deer was looking away from me when I first approached him. They indicated to me that they could see blood on both sides and low which made me feel good. We waited a few min. and picked up the blood trail. This buck had traveld approx. 350 yards from where I shot him. We were amazed at that due to the fact that it was a double lung/heart shot. Anyway we laughed and gave each other high fives. This was definetly a team work harvest. Had I been alone that buck may have blown right out. Here is another picture of a buck I tagged last year about one mile from this one. Does anyone think he is from the same genitic pool? I thought I would never top this one until this year. I am so excited. Bowuntr dont know anything about scoring. What do you think he would score? Send me some info on CBH im interested. Thanks to everyone who makes this site a place to share hunting experiences in a positive way. P.S who says there aren't good Buck in CA LOL.. Tony

Here is the CBH web site that has all the info you need about the organization.

Here is a link to the measurers list that will help you find a measurer that lives close to you.

If you need more info PM me. Nice bucks. Both will make the CBH record minimum which is only 90", assuming they are mule deer. Hard to give an accurate score from the pics. This years buck looks like he is in the 130's. Congrats again. Ed F

Congrats on a nice buck. Question: What is the deer hunting like in So Cal. I am moving to Pendleton early next year.

What unit did you draw for archery elk in AZ?

Good luck.

Beaner,

Drew 5b north in AZ. So cal is ok, but you will want to move further north along the coast. The X Zones can be good but you have to put time in. Let me know when you move and I will try and help you out.
