Buying a Vet breakfast

This morning, Veterans Day, I stopped in the local restaurant for breakfast. As I got out of my car I noticed an old man with plates "Honorably Discharged Veteran" getting out of his car. We must have eaten at the same pace because he was in front of me at the cashier. I told the young cashier that I was buying his breakfast today. He turned to me and said, "I don't take charity". I told him it wasn't charity, that I was thanking him for his service to our Country. He gave me a gruff look and thank you.
