ok, here's a question for ya, even the guys out there that swear by mechanical broadheads, I shoot them too, but would you dare shoot a buffalo with a mechanical?
I'm sure there will be those that test the limits and will feel they need to try. I have seen quite a few buffalo killed in my life and let me share 2 stories with you I saw a guy shoot one 6 times with a .300 Wby magnum and it was still kicking and on it's feet. Now the guy had his gun sighted in too high and was shooting the buff high and wouldn't listen but that's a lot of abuse for an animal to still be standing. Then I saw a young gal shoot one with a .280 and made a good shot on it and it took her 2 more to put it down and they were in the boiler room! I have seen one shot kills but they can be hard to kill and can humble a guy if you don't make a good shot! They are tougher than the meanest bull elk around and have a very thick hide. A fixed head offers advantages that one may want to consider if bowhunting a buffalo and giving due consideration to the animal hunted! That being said I saw a guy kill one with one shot with a fixed blade broadhead and the animal didn't suffer. Shot placement is the key.
A friend of mine shot a cow buffalo with 125 grain spitfires. Two shots in the lungs and she was down. First one buried fletch deep, second shot was just a make sure shot. Plenty of penetration if you ask me.
A friend of mine shot a cow buffalo last month with Aftershock broadheads (Mechanical). He was not impressed, it took four shots all with poor penetration. He shoots a 70 lbs Ross Cardiac.
I used to work for a 9000 acre bison ranch. I guided many hunts on the ranch. We would only let people use a good sharp 2 blade. We did have a hunter try and use a mechanical bhead and could not get good enough penetration when the bull would walk the arrow would fall out. Another thing shoot the bison quartering away because the way the ribs lay you have a better chance at getting into the heart and lungs than a perfect broadside shot. If you do center a rib you may not penetrate.
