This might sound like a dumb question, but I am just getting into bowhunting and I was told that I would have to take a safety course before I could get tags. Not worried about this season, but thinking about the next. Is this true? How much does it cost? Thanks for the help

which state?

I know that here in utah they advise you to take a course but it is not manditory.

just thinking,

is this for hunting for your first time? because we have a hunters safety course we have to take to even be able to go hunting also, I was thinking maybe you were talking about just for bowhunting

I have hunted mule deer with a rifle for 5 years now and I took hunters safety for that, but now I want to get into bowhunting, and was told by a friend that I would have to take (and pass) a safety course before I could get archery tags. I was wondering if this was true.

I think some states require the bowhunter safety course and some don't. I had to get my card for Wyoming and I took the combo course (reg. hunter safety and bowhunter safety) here in AZ. They did a one night archery class and the rest of the time (10 classes) was regular hunter safety classes and there were no questions on the combo test that we're archery related. I know in AZ they don't require any hunter safety cards unless you are between the ages of 10 and 13. I wish they did require it here. Do you remeber if your class had any mention of archery at all? Because if it did you probably took the combo cousre. Anyway it should say combo on your hunters ed card if you did. An Archery hunters ed course shouldn't be any more than a couple hours of class, you outta take it, its worth it and you learn more than you think if you have a good instructor.

Hope that helps

To answer your questions the course that is recognized is the NBEF/IBEP bowhunter education course.
This class is at least 12 hours long and is usually taught over a four night and half a day on a saturday.
The class covers topics such as why we bowhunt, history of bowhunting, scouting, when to shoot where to aim,
blood trailing, tree stand safety, survival and bowhunting techniques.
Right now Utah does not require this class. Montana does Idaho does along with Alaska and several Canadian provinces.
We will have a combo class ( Gun and Bowhunter ) safety class
the first part of January at the Lee Kay Center in Salt Lake if you live in Utah.
Near the end of January we will hold a Bowhunter Education course as well.

If anyone is interested you may send me a PM and I will notify you when the dates are firm

Thanks Gordy

For Montana you will have to take the course. The only way around it is if you have previously obtained a bow stamp from another state.
You should be able to find the classes on the FWP site, or a sporting goods store. The way they worked over here, Missoula, etc. it was first come first serve so you had to wait in line for a couple hours prior to the first day class. Go to a class early in the summer, later the on the competition for spots gets worse.

Thanks a lot for the posts guys, this has been a big help. Now I just have to find a class near Fargo,ND as that is where Im going to school. Thanks Again.

The MT classes are free. I took them this summer with my daughters. Its interesting how much people can learn that so many of us take for granted. I have been archery hunting for over 20 years and was glad to take the class with the other sportsmen (and women) Bittersweet
