A Mendocino County man was arrested Friday after allegedly brandishing a bow and arrow in an ill-fated attempt to steal marijuana.

According to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, a 46-year-old man called law enforcement around 6:45 a.m. Friday to report an attempted robbery at his home on Henderson Lane in Covelo.

He claimed that suspect Hank Whipple, 24, had used a bow and arrow in an attempt to steal marijuana growing on his property. The victim, however, responded with pepper spray and four rounds of birdshot.

Deputies and Round Valley Tribal Police officers found Whipple at a Tabor Lane address in Covelo about 8:30 p.m. Friday. Whipple fled, climbing onto the roof of a house and then refused to come down, according to the sheriff's office.

After approximately 15 minutes of negotiations, Whipple climbed down and was arrested. He was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits where he was treated for wounds from dozens of shotgun pellets in his back. He was later booked at the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery and a parole hold.
