tonight i came home to see my wife had gotten a black lab... it is 100% pure and i had a few questions for those of you who use dogs to hunt horn... First off some tips on training would be nice if anyone would like to share. Also i was wondering if getting HIM fixed would be a good or bad idea for shed hunting purposes... thanks to anyone who comments i appretiate the help!

Thats awesome! First off, are you asking about training tips when it comes to manners, waterfowl, or shed hunting? How old, and are you planning on ever breading him?

The dog is 5 weeks old right now, his mother died. the parents are papered. iw as wanting tips for hunting sheds with the dog... im not into waterfowl at all. in the matter of breading him... just depends if he will be a more focused shed hunter if he is fixed or not. I put him with a freshie deer antler last night to sleep with and will make that his main toy from here on out. Anyone who has any ideas let me know i would really appreciate the help!

Start with the basics like "sit", "stay", "come", and other basic commands at this age. You might even wait until he's seven weeks old to really get serious. Right now @ 5 weeks old I would just establish a bond and help him feel at home in his new surroundings and work on potty training. Get a book on basic training and put it to work. You have a couple of weeks to get some training info since he's only 5 weeks old but you want to start training at 7-8 weeks old. Go to antlerdogs.com and get the training DVD. This DVD is a little vague but you can call the guy who made it and he will help you out over the phone. Also, I got the book 'Water Dog" by Richard A Wolters which is a very big help when it comes to training the dog to do things that help out during antler hunting even though it is a duck hunting book. If you have any questions that I personally can help you with then send me a PM with your phone number and I will be glad to call you and talk about shed hunting with dogs. fatrooster.
