Big Horn Sheep

I had a big argument with a buddy that claimed he had found some sheep sheds the other day. I told him that Big Horns didn't shed and the only horn that actually comes off is the antelope sheaths.
I did some searching on the net and I couldn't find anything about the big horns shedding sheaths. I knew the males didn't shed but what about the females???
So next thing I know he is at the door with these:

He found 4 of these just laying around near the three corners area. What's the deal here?

Bighorn Sheep do not shed their horns. There should be a couple skulls around there where your buddy found those sheaths.

There were no skulls anywhere near these and they were found as a set. He found another set not far from the first set. No skulls anywhere. Seems wierd to me

There is a nasal Bot Fly that can cause there sheaths to actually slough off the porous bone. It happens mostly with Desernt Bighorns and is quite common in some areas. I have found several in Arizona.

But if the infection is that bad they usually don't live long. Not really a true shed.

They are off a dead sheep, no question. The coyotes may have drug off the skull, propbably from sheep that died of pneumonia there last year. Also, not sure it is legal for him to possess them, might want to take them back where he found them.

YEp,you gonna be in BIG trouble when the feds find those in your collection,no joke 10 years $10,000 fine

I have 3 friends that have found horn shealths from big horns while shed hunting. They are legal to possess.

Why dont you call the MT F&G and tell them that...

Hopefully Utah is different as it is a bad deal to have them in Montana, a buddy found a nice ram last year and just took pictures and walked away, rather than bring them home or tell the F&G he just left it there for his own personal memory! Find the horn Goose!

In utah it "IT IS ILLEGAL TO, POSSESS, SELL, OR TRADE UNMARKED SHEEP HORNS" I guess you could take them in and have them marked???

Those are off a dead or dying sheep.

Hornkiller,

Where exactly does it say that? I hear all sorts of different rules regarding what is and whats not allowed in NV. I've never seen anything in writing though.

HJB the number one way for you to find out is to call your states fish and Game, they are friendly people and not out to get you. I have a friend in teh F&G here in the state of MT that i call all the time if i have a question, if you keep your slate clean you have nothing to worry about ever in life. Find the horn Goose!
