Big day small elk shed.

While elk hunting with a friend about two weeks ago I glassed up an elk shed about 1 mile away. I could see a road about 500 yards from the shed but from where I was at there was no road leading to it. I didn't want to waste valuable elk hunting time retrieving a shed so I decided to come back and get it the first chance I got. Well on Monday the 23rd on November I took my shed hunting dogs and went out for the day to go and get the shed. I first went to the spot where I glassed it up the first time and glassed it up again and got a few landmarks. It took me half a day to go down to the valley floor and pick my way around the correct road but I finally got to my destination. I let the dogs out and gave them the "search" command and meandered in the direction of the antler. On the way to it Daisy my yellow lab found a chalky deer antler. When we got about 30 yards from the elk antler she found it and picked it up and brought it to me. At first she had trouble figuring out how to carry it but she eventually conquered the task.

A little out of balance.

In my hands. If you look closely at the top of the antler you will see a small fork making it a seven point. On my way to this antler I saw a friend driving around and he went with me to get the antler. He actually showed me the way to get to it. Well to make a long story short he talked me out of it and now he has it, ha ha. But I'm glad to have shared a little bit of shed huntin' with someone else. He was amazed that I had glassed up this antler and actually drove about fifteen miles around the mountain to get to it and actually found it. It was a very good day until I got a flat tire on my ATV and had to go about 15 miles on it in the dark. Then the trailer lights wouldn't work. All in all I enjoyed the whole trip and dropped my trailer and ATV off at a friends house about 10 miles down the road. To day I went to pick it up, fixed the flat and I'm ready for the next trip. fatrooster.

well done...nuthin' wrong with that one. sounds like a great day. thanks for the good story to go along with the pics...ditto what browtine said...i'm available, too....

Ted. whenever your ready. Art, Archerybug, no he did not get his bull. Browtine, thanks and your always welcome to come to nevada. Littlefoot, you also are always welcome to come along but I don't think Nevada will live up to the standards of shed hunting that your used to.
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. fatrooster.

Hey 'rooster! That country looks like up behind Currant Creek or Hot Creek Reservoir in the Snake Range? I was deer hunting up there two yrs. past and saw a bull wearin' a rack about the size of that shed...he had seven cows with him! Not much success, but I did find a couple of small sheds. I was surprised to see elk and find the shed antlers!

NVPete, I was in area 6 down off the Dunphy exit on interstate 80. Long ways from where you are talking about. Pretty nice sheds you got there. I've never found a spike elk antler and hope to add that to my list this year. fatrooster.
