Best Wyoming Antelope Unit

I have no idea. Good old Garth Carter has his 10 best, and I know 2 guys that drawed the 2 best units for big bucks on Garths list last year, and they said it was way overrated. One guy took his son to a unit that had tags left over, and the kid killed a bigger buck on that unit, than his dad did on Garth top 2. Plus he told me he seen 3 bigger bucks on his kids hunt, that was bigger than anything he seen on he top Garth pick.

'lbh'-----I hope this will give someplace to start?

Getting the unit correct per County listing may be a challenge but alot of these countys only have 1-2 huge units in them.

Robb

Good information and thanks for taking the time to do it. Considering the thousands taken each year, it also really put it into perspective how tough it is to get a B&C antelope.

No problem Rick.....and the rest of ya.

It actually is 5 freaking pages of Wyo B&C Antelope but 90% of them are from the very same counties as the Top 50.

I have max pts on Antelope as a Non-Ressy....BFD....but....I am squaring away my first choice for March application--'cheapie fee' of course! ha

I do have a pretty good Lock on my 2nd choice.....

Rick ya want the full 5 pages----I'll toss 'em over to ya?

I'm building points for the Red Desert also. Before the preference point system started, I hunted in Niobraro county and when people look at the mount that came from there, I like to say that it came from the least populated county in the least populated state in the United States.

I spoke with a bioligist in 07 before I hunted a "premier" unit in Carbon county just after he did his summer count before hunting season. He counted something like 8,000 antelope and he told me that he saw about 10 that he felt would go book. Even in the best units they are not behind every sagebrush patch. They are one in a thousand at best but I bet there is a booner in every Wyoming unit. You just have to find it.

Robb,
I appreciate all your work, but I like your Cliff Notes version!
It would take me all night to analyze 5 pages of statistics, besides I am probably hoping to draw a second choice somewhere decent.
Rick

I didn't know the red desert units were in Carbon county,I thought they were mostly in Sweetwater county. I agree, Carter is pulling a fast one, is his #1 unit still 60? Actually I think the red desert units are way over rated, maybe too many dry years have changed things. That buck recently killed in Natrona county, at 91 2/8 inches and not even 15 inches long, its quite amazing.

Robb... sweet list! When you compare the latest magazine with that list of counties and units, looks to me Carters have it dead on. 9 of their top 10 match up.

>>91 2/8 inches and not even 15 inches long

Goes to show you mass is it for speet goats!

I want to put my .02 cents in favor of excellent hunting in units other than those most highly ranked.

I made time for 7 days of hunting lopes last year in a area that doesn't take any points to draw. The first 3 days of my hunt, my rifle stayed in the camper, wrapped up and in the gun case as it was when i left home. I looked at an unbelievable amount of antelope bucks, sometimes, most of the time, over a hundred bucks each day, almost all on public or accessible ground.

I never did see "Mr. BIG" but i finally picked from the many and ended up taking a nice 80" antelope! I was more than happy with that portion of my trip and would highly recommend anyone to plan plenty of time, look at all the bucks possible, and they too should have a wonderful trophy hunt. Thanks!!

Joey

Well said Joey.

Take your time and look over the goats. Antelope are tough to judge and looking over a bunch is probably just as important as which unit your in. I have never hunted Wyoming but have been involved in several hunts here in Utah. Antelope are a blast to hunt!

Nice info Robb. Good luck on your draw too!

what units are considered the "red desert". Is it primarily 57,58,59 or do 60 and 61 get included as well and potentially others.
