NR with a bunch of points (25) that is tired of waiting for an early season rifle tag. Unit and outfitter recommendations appreciated.

There are only 140 people either with you in your point group or ahead of you. Gambling them on a late hunt seems like a a rushed or emotionally driven move. Unless health or age are an issue I would stay the course. If your dead set on hunting , pick up a bow or smoke stick and take your pick of units.

There is a 4B and 8 hunt with early rifle tags this year that you would have decent odds at. If you chose to not do those hunts do to trophy class why are you willing to gamble them on a late rifle hunt?

Just my 2 cents I’m not far behind you at 20 points and with the new added point creep it’s going to make it more interesting.

Good luck it’s anxiety season for anyone with a boat load of points.

You nailed it! Unit 1 muzzleloader is 100% with 24 points. The dates are perfect. That hunt would be a blast.
Wasn’t unit 1 an early rifle hunt in 2021? How did you determine that it will be 100% with 24 points?

I had a friend in your situation a couple years ago, and I had him call Steve Chappell. They hunted Unit 9 muzzleloader and got a nice 380 bull for the TV show. He had a great time.

I was going off GoHunt. 27early rifle would be 100% too.
Thanks. Epic Outdoors says 25+ for unit 1 early muzzleloader and 24+ for unit 27 early rifle. I guess there is a chance. I’ve been looking at the point totals and it doesn’t seem like many of the top point holders are drawing tags.

Unit 23 Late Rifle with Mogollon Rim Outfitters - Greg Krogh! Him and his guides have this unit dialed in and his hunters take great bulls every year. I took this bull with them this past season in 2021.

He’s on my short list. Called him about a week or so ago and left a message. Perhaps he is still hunting or at one of the Sheep Shows etc.

Probably still down in Mexico hunting Muledeer . I’ve hunting with him twice great bunch of guys and they really do a great job of pre-scouting.

how big of a bull are you hoping to kill? Also is archery an option? Arizona Archery seasons are great tags and elk in arizona are very killable with a bow. especially if you hire an outfitter. you have enough points to draw the best archery tags arizona has to offer. The potential of a giant bull is high on those hunts. Burnt Timber Outfitters or Koury Guide Service in 3a/3c can and will but you on some great bulls if you drew that archery tag.

If archery isn't an option you close to drawing early rifle in 3a/3c or you could do 27 early rifle. definitely some good options for you though.

You should split with someone if you are going 23 late. I would be willing with 15 lol. Im just pipe dreaming looking forward to hearing how you do.

23 late with AZ ground pounders or Greg Krogh will put you on about as big of a bull as you’ll kill anywhere else. Hard not to want an early rut hunt with those points though. I wouldn’t burn them on any other late hunt then 23 though. The rest aren’t even in the same zip code of quality as 23 is.
Also if you do burn them you could piggy back someone up to a tag easily. That’d pay for half your guide fee ??

So, only my second year of putting in for elk in AZ and I am 50. Am I completely wasting money? Can I draw a tag before I am 65?

Yup. Just depends on how flexible you are. Plenty of hunts with decent chances. If you insist on a premium hunt, you could be waiting a long time, however. But even at that, there's always a remote chance to draw most every hunt in AZ, even for a NR.

Yup. The late hunts favor you as a NR. If you want a Sept tag, well, you might hit 65 before…haha

But, ya never know! Might as well try. Get busy living or get busy dying! Right?

Good luck!

Without looking at all the draw reports, there are definitely tags you can draw within a few years.

In the AZ draw, half (5% of the total) of the NR tags go to the highest point total in the Bonus Round. The other half go In the next round (1-2 pass), anyone can draw. Granted more points increases odds, but last year, a NR with 2 points drew 1/2b/2c, which is usually a 20 ish point tag.

Hey @Buzzy just scroll up in this post... I already posted a picture of the bull I took.
Uggggg, not paying attention. Thanks and awesome bull. I have 16 points and have considered putting in for this late hunt. With bulls like that it makes it a little easier to roll the dice and see what happens. apologize if I missed but how many points did you have when you drew the tag?

Buzzy,
He mentioned that in his earlier post as well. He drew with 8 points.
