Best Greasy Spoon...

OK - TTK's post on another thread got me a little hungry and thinking about good old fashioned greasy fast food joints that really know how to cook a burger and some real fries. So I thought it would be good to hear where the best little diners are located and what the haute cuisine is there. The more Greasy Spoon / Hole in the Wall the better. The kind of food you crave after eating MRE's and beans for a week or two...

There are others that can certainly make the list but here's my top 5:

1. Brad's Food Hut (aka Slut Hut) - in Cedar City, Utah. The best of the best! My wife and son love the taquitos and I love the burgers! Two or three patties with ham, mayo, bacon,a little lettuce, ketchup - GOOD STUFF! Real made to order Cherry or Vanilla Coke or Pepsi - great shakes and fries.

2. Louie's Cafe - Pelican Lake, Utah - been out of business for at least 15 years but they had the best burgers in the whole Basin for sure! Greasy as greasy gets - great pork sausage burgers too. I used to to love going to work with my dad because if we ever had to go south of Ouray, we would always stop at Louie's.

3. Polar King - Vernal, Utah. - now out of business . The best homemade, hand sliced, french fries ever. Little bitty place on Main Street - no dine -in just a service window only. Lots and lots and lots of cheese on the cheeseburgers.

4. Quix - Belton, TX (on I-35). You can get a burger here, but the speciality is breakfast burritos. Chorizo and eggs, sausage and eggs, bacon and eggs - three kinds of hot sauce on fresh tortillas and Dr. Pepper on tap. A great way to end a eight hour AM UPS shift (3-11). Greasy greasy good mexican food.

5. Market Grill - Cedar City, UT. Freshest beef and pork in the world. In fact, on auction days, you may be able to pick out your burger while it is on the hoof that morning and order it for a late lunch that afternoon. Great breakfasts too - eggs cooked in butter, pork sausage patties, hash browns - mmmmm. Mouth-watering!

I'm all about the cheeseburgers and breakfast food...

1- Polar King- Vernal, UT Waaahhhh! It's gone!

2- Wimpy's- Vernal, UT- burgers and fries

3- Betty's- Vernal, UT- Everything is good at Betty's

4- 7-11 Ranch Vernal, UT can't beat their sausage. It's their own secret recpie. Have a Porky burger or as a steak covered in cheese and white gravy. Mmmmmmm So good.

5- Slut-Hut Cedar City, UT

6- Babe's Joplin, MO

7- Rocky's Roosevelt, UT- Get a double Old Timer with cheese. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm good.

Those are my favs.

"SLUT HUT" ROFL. There is now the Main Street Grill in addition to the Market Grill. Same owners. Yum - Yum!

Roy,

You live in Texas and Whataburger didn't even make your list? :) First time I ever was in Texas I drove through one and had no idea what to order. When I finally did and they asked if I wanted to "Whata-size" that. I almost laughed out loud.

Anyone ever eat at Linda's Summit Cafe in Eureka? It was really great for a while, until we were served a mold burger. It went downhill fast and is now out of business. Aside from the smoke and 10* sloped floor, it was great (greasy)!
How about the scones at the Santa-Queen in Santaquin? Very good!
Marv's and Fairway Grill in St George are both good.
Other places I hit up passing through is Larry's in Fillmore (Halfway between St George and Salt Lake) & Leo's in Delta.
I'm going to half to check out these other mentioned places in Cedar City!!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-07 AT 11:24AM (MST)[p]Well - I didn't want to put the big chains on this list... but yeah Whataburger is not too bad. They can get pricey though. They have by far the best commercials (them and Jack-in-the-Box) of the big chains...

I'll throw one in for Arizona.

Lenny's Burger Shop:

Haven't eaten there in years but the Lenny's Burger was amazing. Two patties, cheese, all the junk and add jalapenos...mmmmmm... We doubed them "gut bombs"...

Just a little hole in the wall dive...makes the food taste better...

I had to look them up...the even have a web site...

http://www.lennysburgers.com/index.html

BTW: they should put a disclaimer on that site...the food doesn't look anything like that.

One place I forgot to mention was the station in Palmyra Virginia. They cook up some grease burgers and they are awesome!

1.Mike's in Eureka, Kali. It's been there forever. Chili bugrers and garlic fries to die for!

2. The Burger Bar in the town of Mad River, Kali. It's way out in the sticks in the middle of all the deer hunting. There is a gas station/post office/grocery store/bar and the Burger Bar in town. That's all. The Burger Bar is about a 12' 1960 trailer house converted to a walk up hamberger joint. After about three days up on the mountain, the Burger Bar seems like a 5 star resturaunt.

Being a Texas Boy I gotta go w/ Whataburger for my favorite FF joint. But my main weakness is Tex Mex food anywhere.

KTC!!!
Dude you nailed it. Crap, I'd forgotten about the Antimony Merc! Best "gut bomb" I ever ate! Plus the chick that served it was way cute!! Me & hornhog2 was staying in Koosherm at Hatch's man camp, hunting elk on the "table". It was a 12 mile ride up a nasty road on wheelers at 5:00am every morning. We would try to get off the mountain before the Merc closed just to get one of them Burgers! LOL.

The horseshoe inn located in downtown Etna Wyoming has some awesome burgers and fries. You can run your finger down the wall and it will be stained yellow from all the nicotine, and Grubs in Rock Springs Wyoming has a buger called "the shamrock" massive beef patties toped with about an inch of velveta cheese.

Oh yeah! How could I forget Round Robin! I was going to go there today cuz I heard they were open (they only open when God tells them to) but it was noon and there was NO WAY I was heading into Roosevelt to get anything at noon. Just way too busy everywhere.

LOL about the goat, Bobcat! I believe it!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-07 AT 11:36PM (MST)[p]Love the little burger joint in Parowan, UT across from the park.

Another vote for Leo's in Delta, UT.

Arctic Circle's halibut burger is truly addicting.

But the best burger ever was the ham-o-neer at Pack-Out in Henderson, NV. Double greasy patties with a big old slab of grilled ham in the middle.

Burrrp!!
where's the Rolaids?
you guy's are making my gallbladder wishing it was removed!

Junction Drive-in in Kanab!!!!! Always stop there for a burger, fries (with fry sauce...) and a shake on our way to Utah!!!

The Backdoor Cafe, aka The Merc in Antimony. Grub is way good, service is great and the hired help is easy on the eyes! The Antimony Burger and the fresh pies made by Reba are unbeatable.

You haven't eaten a burger until you have eaten a Tommy Burger in downtown Los Angeles. Just don't go at night! It is not in the best part of town. The pigeons wait around until the chile drips from your elbow. And the pan-handlers are always around just for kicks. You have to go to the original just for the atmosphere.

Bobcat, make sure you have your pea-shooter with you!

Its fair chase, or its foul!

bobcat,

Is the Starr the place where they bring all of your food seperate? Then you get a thick rib-eye with 2" of garlic on it?

That IS good!

burgers, the 3 crowns in kingsburg ca,,, its a job just to finish one :) breakfast, zingo's bakersfield ca,,, its a dive truck stop, need i say more LOL ,,,, dinner , the prime rib at terribles lakeside casino in pahrump nev,,,, its 6 bucks of damn good beef,,,, i am HUNGRY

Some a you guys should spend more time hiking than eating. Roy in particular.
How about a Mountain house meal 15 miles in on the Escalante desert.
Or maybe a dry ramen noodle on top of the fifty.
Just a couple a my favorites.
Have fun fightin with yer wives all weekend. Get those leaves raked. Gone hunt'n! Later

Pat's drive in, Tucson, AZ love them chili dogs with greasy fries

Banditos and Lawmen, Bisbee, AZ. They have a burger (The Pit) that has 6-1/2 patties!

Bun Huggers, Flagstaff, AZ

Greasy Tony's, Tucson, AZ, no charge for extra grease!

The Star Hotel in Elko is served a "family style", first they bring you a large bowl of house soup, then a house salad along with bread. Then they bring out the platers of fries (best I have ever had),green beans, spagetti, chili beans. Then they bring you your steak that you chose as your meat. They do have chicken and pork loin and rack of Lamb too.

The best Greasy Spoon place was just shy of 50 years in one location right here not far from my house. If it had been there 50 years, it could have been a Historical Building and then it would not have been forced out of business by the Giant Home Depot and Keiser Hospital.
The place was called Ingrams Chili Bowl and they had the best Chili east of the Atlantic Ocean or so the old owner use to say.
Damn I miss that place. All of the meals could be served with Chili covering the rest of the meal.
Classic menu:
Egg's In The Red (CHILI)
Chili Cheese Burger
Pig In The Red (Ham slice on bun covered in Chili)
El Dorado (Cheese Burger covered in Chili with Hash Brown)
Double Enchilada's covered in Chili
Chili Hash Browns.
These were just some of the more popular meals every day. The Chili was made in the room inside a very large Stainless Steel Pot and was stired with a boat oar that had the handle shortened. They made 125 gallons twice a week, and the beef for the Chili was a special cut (cubed) and delievered right to the door. The original owner lives now in Billings, MT and I heard from him quite often, he is 86 years young and pretty good on the computer.
Jack's father had started the family chili secret many years ago in MO. and then moved to Kali and opened a small diner called White Castle Chili I think was the name. The two brothers later had sold the recipe to Dennison's Chili a long time ago and they changed it a bit so no conflict.
One story I remember Jack telling me once was this. A traveling salesman stop by one day as he was told to go there for the best breakfast or lunch place around. The salesman ordered the El Dorado Special (see above) and after having ate that, the waitress asked him if he would like some ice cream for desert. He said I wish you had told me that before I ate all of that meal. So he gave in and order a bowl of ice cream. Jack came over to him and asked him how the breakfast was and he replied, that was the best breakfast I have ever had and have been on the road sales for a long time. I sure have never had Chili like that before. Jokingly, Jack said would you like some on top of that Ice Cream? The guy thought for a minute, then said YES. They gave him a scope of Chili right over the Ice Cream and he finished it all, paid his bill and left.
Jack siad he never came back, don't know if we killed him or not with all of that Chili. LOL

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-07 AT 00:45AM (MST)[p]Anybody ever eat at Lambert's in Springfield, Missouri? That place rocks. It's the "Home of Throwed Rolls". They actually bring a bread cart around and the dude throws rolls to you. You stick your hand up and they chuck them. It's fun! The food comes out in skillets (like, the size I'd fry up some chicken in for my whole family of 6!) and then they come around with apples, fried okra, rolls, taters, all kinds of side dishes and just keep the food a' coming. Pretty good food and a fun time. They're always packed, busses stop there on their way to Branson, and people have left business cards EVERYWHERE on the walls. If you've never tried it and you're in that area....you should. Awesome place.

Here's their website...it even gives you a tour.

Actually Rus, there is 5 "houses" that you could hit with a rock from there.

Been around the world, ate at a bunch of places. The Star. Hands down, is superior to them all.

The best hamburger, and I love burgers, I'v ever had was at Johns Sierra Store between Woodfords and Markleeville, CA in eastern Alpine Co. Flame broiled, great bread. Alas, John has passed on but was the place in the 80's. Ate a Lamberts, just south of Springville, MO. It's all that it is said to be.
The Star in Elko is a Basque Restarant and they Basque's serve family style. Another great Basque restarant was the Sheepherders in Los Banos ,CA. and another is(forgot the name) in Gardnerville,NV. Use to plan trips to eat at Basque restarants.

yes, but it's been twenty years I used to love the chance to get away from work and boredom in Elko.

Back in the early 80's we hunted southwestern Idaho a lot.(Juniper Mt., South Mt.) We ate a lot at a cafe in McDermit, OR called the "Say When Cafe". Tha biggest T-Bone steaks I have ever seen, bar none. I often wonder if it's still there?

Spanish fork has two burger places that are good eats.

Little Acorn at the mouth of the canyon has been metioned before. Great homemade bread and shakes.

Glades on Main St. is a local favorite. Great burgers and fish and chips. A true greasy spoon.
