Best Broadhead or Mechanical for Hogs?

Hi guys, I have a hog hunt at the end of Feb, and I'm curious what everyones opinion is for the best broadhead or mechanical for Hogs! I've been told that Rocky Mountain Snipers are the best mechanical. This guy recommended the mechanical because he said that the mechanical flies exactly like your field tip!

Another friend recommended the Steel Force serrated fixed broadhead. He says that this broad head doesn't fly much differently than the field tip either, but I have my suspicions.

Well, whatcha think?

I would recommend not using a mechanical for hogs. I'm assuming you are talking about feral hogs and not javelina. The only broadhead I have used on hogs is the 100 gr muzzy 3blade, and they worked fine. I have also shot the 100 gr 2 blade Steelforce and your friend is right. They shoot well. Another thing is that not all mechanicals shoot like field tips in my experience. Most will, but for some reason 100 gr Rocket Aeroheads do not shoot like my fieldtips. My only other experience with mechanicals is with the Spitfires, and they flew great.

Rockets are the best mechanical out there in my opinion, I and all my hunting buddies have been using them for years and they have never failed even once. I have also seen some 500+ lb russian hogs killed with them no problem. Ed is the first person that i have ever heard say that a Rocket did not fly exactly like his field point. But as far as choosing a head to hunt with i think you should go with whatever you are confident with. Confidence is half the battle in bowhunting.

About confidence. I'm a total newbie to bow hunting, so I'm just trying to get some opinions. Thanks for the responses!

Take a look at slicktrick.net , I am also a newbie and had some trouble with my broadheads flying like my field points. These flew very similar to my field points and I used them on my elk last year.

I've probably arrowed a couple hundred hogs over the years and one thing you need to keep in mind is they are TOUGH! They have thick hide, boars have an armor plate that protects their shoulder that you will not shoot through, and they all can go along way with marginal hits. My advice would be to use a well contructed replaceable blade head (Muzzy, Innerloc, Wasp, etc.) or better yet a fixed blade (Magnus Stingers, Steelforce, etc.). I'd stay away from mechanicals for that particular species. There's just far too many other heads out there that will work fine penetrate easier, and are fairly easy to tune. Just my .02.

I know, it's bizarre. Out of my buddies bows, they shoot just like fieldpoints. With mine, they dont. I can get them to shoot after tuning a little, but I guess I was trying to explain that we should not rely on the fact that all mechanicals will always shoot like fieldpoints.

Well there ya go take it from someone who has killed a lot of bacon. I do know they are tough and it takes a hell of a good head to get through the tough hide they carry. I personally would shoot a Rocket into anything on this continent but that is my preference, I think that a good cut on impact head might get a little better penitration on a tough ole hog. I like the looks of those G5's but i can't say as i have ever shot one, the nugent heads or the Steelforce are good heads too. Alot of people on here like the Muzzy heads if you can get them to fly right. So i guess there is a start to picking the right head for you. Take a list from here go to the shop and find the one that looks good to you and and make sure they fly good. I don't think you'll have a problem with any of them

Bownut,
I am on the Rocky MT. staff, and am a firm believer in fixed blades brodheads. The best penetrateing fixed head rocky has is the Supreme XP, a 1 1/8 cutting Dia. Stainless Steel slayr Tip. Its a Titanium based brodhead that has .30" blades X 3. the XP is 100 grns. My second choose is the titanium 85 gr, 3 blade 1 1/8 cut head which they call the tri-series. My pick on your pig hunt would be the supreme xp"s, Good Luck and shoot straighter. MM Go to www.RockyMtBroadheads.com

MuleyMeyers, I am not the one going on the pig hunt that is JohnSWA. And as for the Rocky Mtn broadheads i'm glad you like them, and I am sure they are good heads but your not going to get me to shoot them, I am a Rocket man have been for a long time and don't see any reason to change.

Guys, thanks for all of the great advice! I was going to go with the snipers, but I think I will go with the Stealforce serrated edge broadheads.

This site is awesome and I can't thank you all enough for your recommendations!

Well, I'm off to watch the playoffs!
