I have never hunted black bears before and am going with a nonresident into unit 27 to try it. anybody have thoughts on where would be the best area and time to go. any help would be appreciated

I spent a couple of days up by Meyers Cove this week, saw lots of elk but no bears. Hunted mostly along the south side of Camas Creek. We came back a few days early because of weather and the creek was getting to deep to ford safely. Hopefully we get a chance to go back up later in the month.

Ya it is in the Frank Church Wilderness, I might wait until fall to try the bears again from the stories of them being everywhere in Sept/Oct

sounds like a good area to start for a first time bear hunter. Looks like some rough country from satellite views. What's a good full skull bear rug going for these days?

Unit 27 is a 2 bear unit. In the fall check along the rivers as they are looking for the salmon there. Forest service guys that count the salmon beds get nervous with them around. They spend weeks up there and the bears seem to get used to them after a time. Talked with one guy that even had his Lab brought in and he was out making a phone call for his wife to come get it and bring up his pistol. Bears started chasing his dog. He was nervous after a couple days of that.

can you buy an over the counter bear tag there for non-resident?
if not where can you buy a OTC bear tag in ID and have a good chance of shooting one?

Yes you can buy OTC non resident bear tags in Idaho and in unit 27 and a few other units they are cheaper because F&G would like to have less bears in the area.

I do not know about bears in 76 or 66a, hunted elk around there a couple of years ago but do not know much about the area.
