ITS EASIER TO WALK HIM...WHY START A BEAN BALL WAR AND MAYBE GET ONE OF YOURS HURT. THEN CONSIDER THE SUSPENIONS YOUR PLAYERS WILL GO THROUGH. ALSO CONSIDER BARRY WILL TAKE ONLY SO MUCH OF THAT CRAP....THEN HE MAY STOMP THE LIVING CHIT OUT OF SOMEONE.----YD.

RE: Baseball question ?????

On or off the field I don't think he is very well liked. But on the field I think he is respected as a player. He is Willie Mays' God son. And Bobby Bonds son. Plus all of his accomplishments, besides the HRs.

RE: Baseball question ?????

I was never big on beaning as a player. I'd definitely throw him some chin music though, you have to, to keep him honest.

RE: Baseball question ?????

What an absolutely STUPID QUESTION! I don't like Bonds , or much about him , but for another athlete at the highest level of sports to intentionally try to hurt another person is just ignorant.Get a freakin clue ! It's a sport , and no where in the sport of baseball is there a place to hurt somebody. Does it happen yes it does , and it gives Americas sport a black eye. Just what our youth needs in an already screwed up society, to cheer on a player like Bonds to get thumped by a pitcher....

RE: Baseball question ?????

NMHUNTNUT....WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE ON YOUR LEVEL. THIS IS THE PLAYERS LEVEL. THERE ARE LIVELY HOODS AT STAKE, MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AT STAKE, LARGE EGO'S INVOLVED, & WITH THE FAME COMES MORE MULTI MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACTS. WHEN YOUR MANAGER SAYS BEAN THE HITTER ON THE NEXT PITCH....YOU BETTER CLOCK HIM, OR YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF IN AA BALL. YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE PLAYERS PERSPECTIVE, THEY CANT LIVE BY THE CODE OF LITTLE LEAGUE RULES. JUST THE FACTS.....YD.

RE: Baseball question ?????

I had met Barry Bonds twice and both times he was very cold and bitter. You cant' give much respect to a man who has a no respect for anyone else.

RE: Baseball question ?????

YUKONDOLL, I agreed with your first post 100%. But your second reply , well do you really believe theres managers who tell thier pitchers to intentionally hit a batter? Your crazy if you believe that. Pitchers themselves will do so in pay back fashion, and your right , there are so many factors in MLB that "US" LITTLE LEAGUERS' never know about. Also when a player is sent down they normally go to AAA before being sent to AA.I seriously dought a pitcher will get sent down for not hitting a batter, I can see ESPN and the rest of the media world laying into that story....Again , it was a stupid question....You know it as well as I do , even if we don't agree about what and how MLB opperates. There is no certain way to know for fact , I'm not playing in the MLB and not sure about you , but my guess is no , so we can only assume and we both know about that too...

RE: Baseball question ?????

I played one season in the Pacific International independent league. I was primarily an outfielder, though I mainly pitched in High School and pitched relief for the independent team. I didn't really see eye to eye with the coach's approach, he was very hands off and just barked orders all the time, didn't demonstrate a great knowledge of the game, or convey that to players. We we're getting run up on like 22-2 by our rival when I was called in from the outfield to pitch relief after we had already used six pitchers. I got the first two guys out, then I walked one. The guy stole second and the coach tells the catcher to have me bean the next batter in the head with a fastball. I told the catcher with glove over face, BS, I'll hit him with a change in the legs. The catcher went off on me. I did throw at the guys legs and brushed him back, wasting a pitch to do so an going 3-2. Then I had to come over the plate to their best hitter and gave up the only home run of my life in 20+ years of pitching. =That's why I'm not a fan of throwing at people. Prove your better by getting them out.

RE: Baseball question ?????

LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-07 AT 12:34PM (MST)[p]Uhh.. you were getting beat 20-2. There's no proving your better by getting them out. The "proving" has already been done. KNOCK THAT SOB OUT WITH A 95MPH HEAD SHOT! LMAO!

Actually - I agree with you. It may have been embarassing to be losing 20-2 and still have them running on you, but if you wouldn't have wasted the 2-2 pitch then you could have went for the corner on it and maybe made him chase it instead of taking you deep. Running up the score is part of the game in pro sports. It has no place in Little League - but once you get paid, you better expect to get beaten badly everyonce in a while and if you get a big lead - don't stop!

There are other ways of a pitcher protecting his players too. Chin music keeps a slugger honest, and if you don't do it then he has the advantage. In that situation I would have let him get a lead off second and told my ss to hold him but not really catch it and drilled him right in the glutes! Nothing like a raspberry on the old buttocks!

As far as Bonds is concerned, most of the league respects him as has been previously stated, but also the Giants are 41-56 - dead ass last place in the NL West - so there really is no need to pitch around Barry all that often. He is not having the greatest year either and he doesn't swing at bad pitches, so there is no need to bean him. Plus the media would then black label that pitcher as a racist, unless the game situation warranted it (as previously discussed) if he were doing it just to keep him from breaking the record, no doubt that they would.

RE: Baseball question ?????

It's a pretty scary deal then . I played but only till HS . My daughters both play competative fastpitch my oldest(14) is playing in the 16U USSSA world tourny as we speak and is a Triple Crown All American champion. My youngest also plays, she just turned 9 and pitches 38 mph and was invited with another team from NM to play with them at the ASA world tourny.I don't have sons , but daughters that play old school caveman ball, and we are also a baseball fanatic family(Yankees of course) how ever have started to pay attention to the Devil Rays as my friend's son , Kevin Chavez was drafted by them as the 32 pick in this years draft as a pitcher.

I believe your words , you seem to have more inside info than I . I know that pitchers controll 99% of their throws and most beamed batters are intentional. The question to beam Bonds , just becuase he is about to break/make history is stupid, atleast in my mind.Whether and person likes , agrees with or hates him , says he cheated or juiced , it's all of no matter. He will break the record and hold it for a few years. I wouldn't want to pitch against him , he has GREAT vision and tracks pitches better than most all MLB players and his swing is parr none , the best. I'm not a Bonds fan or Giants fan , I'm a baseball nut as you are and know that all his qualities can not be back tracked to a steroid issue. He is the most walked player in all of baseball and when a pitcher decides to challenge him throughout a whole game in every "at bats", the odds play the Bonds is going yard, and we both know that. Again , I just felt the question to peg him was stupid and had a hard time believing a mgr could instruct it.I don't like Bonds , but if and when he becomes a player without a contract(maybe 08)I'd take him in pin stripes on the Bronx Bombers...

RE: Baseball question ?????

No worries , kind of like the raiders in 02 , went buck wild in the regular season and pooched it in the big dance. The Yankees are just fine right now , the bats are turning on and our pitching is only getting stronger....You heard it here first , Yankees are WS bound....Who's your team??? Please as it's not Boston....

RE: Baseball question ?????

"Triple Crown All American champion" -What is that?

"I know that pitchers controll 99% of their throws and most beamed batters are intentional."

I wouldn't agree with that so much. I never hit one person intentionally. "Pitching inside" is common, batters get hit if they are not quick, or if they want a free pass. For a guy throwing 90-95, you stub your toe just slightly and it can thow you off to where you hit someone as well. It may appear intentional, but that's not the case. There are very few obvious times when it's intentional and running up the score is one of them, bad blood in the past is another. Some teams just do not like each other and if the game is not on the line, they'll bean the other guy, as soon as look at him. No disrespect to anyone who knows someone who's been drafted, but a drafted player does not an experienced pal make. I've known many drafted guys, some never played an inning after, some played and were awful and never saw a dime of even AA-AAA time. Only one or two amounted to anything. Sorry to go on a tangent, it just drives me a little nuts sometimes to hear all the "I know someone who was drafted" stories like it's a big deal. It might surprise some, but over 90% of the people playing pro ball are playing for only one reason, because they filled a niche and knew someone. A team lost a catcher, they need another, this guy happens to be the cousin of so and so, so he get's the nod -EX. Ken Griffey's and Jay Buhner's brother's played for Class A Bellingham when I was there -both were really not exceptional ball players and many guys in camp I felt were better, or could be at least as good right off the bat. Their brother's were already established stars.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Triple Crown is one of many leagues of fastpitch softball. My daughter plays for the NM Sundancers a very well known name and the most popular team to ever play out of NM . NM Sundancers is a team program that has produced more collegiate fastpitch players than any other fast pitch program in NM. They compete in ASA , USSSA AND TSC (Triple Crown Events)through the US.They are Phoenix this week and some of they will fly to Houston.I know it may not mean much to you , but you say you played , so than you do realize how important club/travel ball is.My daughter is only 14 but plays up and was one of 3 freshman on her high school team to make varsity .There was 7 over the fence home runs through out the high school season, all were by the freshman , my daughter got her first. I'm very proud of her as she is coming along very well.

As for dropping names of knowing this person or this person knows another who plays pro or what ever. Well that is not myself. I mentioned Kevin Chavez , becuase he is the first person that I personally know who has ever been drafted .Your right , most players never get beyond AA, Kevin may and then again he may not. Not alot of high school players get drafted to a pro team organization around here, he did , I know him and his family. Just proud of it too .And I never tried to make anyone think I know more about MLB because he was drafted. Now your crazy if you think 90% of all pro players are there because they know some one . You have personal experiance of your words playing with one team. Where are these players now? Some players know some one who can give a hand out, but 90%, come on now....More like 10% are still there because they know some one...Pro players are pro for 1 reason , they are the best at what they do...Argue it if ya want, but hundreds of pro scouts and professional organizations can't always be wrong , and your 90% qoute is nearly all of em...

RE: Baseball question ?????

I went to the link and printed it , I'll read it on my break , but love all baseball info so thanks , and thank you for the congrats on my kid, she get happy any time she hears me tell her someone said something nice ,I apprecaite it. They just lost thier first game 7-3, I guess it rained all morning and the field was in bad shape and they had two bad first innings and got down and chased the rest of the game.

Man Dman, you listed some whos who on that list. Prince is a banger and Piazza and Alou, Garciaparra, Ripken , all greats. This thread makes me want to hurry up and get home to my season ticket....Curious , but whos your team and why?

RE: Baseball question ?????

How are the Yankees going to the WS when they won't make the playoffs?

Dmanmastertracker, your list of players there only because they 'know' somebody has spome damn good players on there. I am guessing many of them would have made it to the bigs regardless of who they 'know'. Several are/will be Hall of Famers.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Mariner's, hometown favorite. I would be a Braves fan if that dam Larry Jones wasn't on the team, dad played barnstorming ball with some Millwaukie Braves player's in Spokane.

PRO, I thought my point was fairly clear. An amateur ballplayer has to have a chance first in order to be a Hall of Famer, some get priority....

RE: Baseball question ?????

Pro , the Yankees are getting hot , at the right time. They aren't so far back , and remember the end of last season , a few teams got hot and people had already counted them out. The Yankee pitching is getting better , and once Hughes is back and solidly healthy , he will torch hitters.Teams will still hit around our pen , but as long as the Yankees keep pulling the trigger with bats , we'll be just fine. Besides , if I keep telling myself they are going , then it makes for a better day, I'm gonna go one up , the Yankees will win the WS....

RE: Baseball question ?????

Hey NM, there is no such thing as a stupid question,
Just stupid people who ask questions ;-)

It just seems obnoxious to me when Barry hits a homer
& stands there & watches it like he's got all day to round the base's. Back in the days of traditional baseball, that was an invitation to the pitcher to get beaned on your next at bat.

It's kind of a respect thing to not try & show up the pitcher by taking all day while you saunter around the base path. Also with all the roids on board Barry, he's sportin some extra large thighs that can take a baseball w/out getting hurt.

This hole beanball deal is why I like the National League, since thier pitchers have to stand up to the plate after they just got done beaning someone from the opposing team.

RE: Baseball question ?????

I agree , not much respect towards a pitcher , but does he really care , he just went yard. I also like the NL, kind of keeps baseball throw backish and but then there wouldn't be specialists(pitchers)...

RE: Baseball question ?????

The Yankees WON'T make the playoffs, I'll go out on a limb and say no way. They won't catch the Sox, and the wildcard slot is out of reach IMHO. Of course, as a Dodgers fan, it may be a little biased. I played for the Dodgers in the late 70's.....Little league, but it was still the Dodgers, been a fan ever since. I played second base thru JuCo, so Lopes was an idol of mine growing up.

Dman, fair enough, but if someone has the talent, they will make to the bigs in most cases, but I see your point. In the American League, I like the Mariners over any of the other teams. I am hoping for a Dodgers/Mariners World Series.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Funny , I played for the Dodgers too in LL. The dodgers are my dad's team. No , no , the wild card is not out of reach , it changes every day , but as long as the Yankees win they will be fine . The Indians need to loose some , and wouldn't mind Boston falling apart....(I'd LOVE IT) Theres always a punchers chance, I'm telling you , the Yankees are hot right now....A-ROD IS GONE BUCK WILD WITH THE STICK! Once they win the WS, A -ROD will sign a mongo crazy contract with the Bombers....I believe it ....

YD , don't steal the Yankee thunder buddy, I don't think all the devil ray and royals fans would appreciate you thinking little of those outstanding clubs , thus comes the outstanding wins of the Bronx Bombers over them...

>I agree , not much respect

He sure would after a couple bruses on his thigh.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Back on topic for a minute, I believe one reason the batters are hitting so many homeruns is because pitchers have lost the art of the brushback. Pedro M and Clemens are dinos, but they are part of a very small number of pictures willing to take back the inside of the plate. Look where Bonds is in the box, some of the old-school pitchers back in the day would have 'forced' him back a bit, just enough to take away a percentage of his homers. Bottom line, people like the long ball, and when a pitcher brushes a batter back, he either gets warned or tossed. Let pitchers do what they should and homers/averages will go down. JMHO

RE: Baseball question ?????

Well my claim to fame is I once caught a foul ball hit by Ken Boyer. Juan Marichal threw the pitch! It was like 1962 in San Francisco. I never played baseball as a kid but my two brothers did. One brother is now the Commissioner of American Legion ball in Oregon.

Major league players are intentionally hit all the time. Notice I said hit and not beaned. Beaned is throwing at a players head. As a pitcher it is in your best interest to retaliate on occasion. It protects your team, plus you know what they say about payback! Rather or not it is approved by management is irrelevant.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Any of you who think that many hitters get thrown at these days, INTENTIONALLY AIMING FOR THE BATTER'S HEAD, are pretty clueless. It's not at all uncommon to throw at a hitter for various reasons, most of which have been discussed here and some are even valid, but throwing at someone's head with the intent to bean them is very rare. Guys are intentionally hit with some regularity from the nipple line on down, but in this day and age its pretty rare for any hard thrower to go head hunting. Also, nowhere near 90% of the pitches thrown are right where intended. As you get to higher levels of baseball, more and more of the pitches are very close to where intended, but it ain't close to 90% that go right where they were intended to be. My son has the opportunity to bullpen catch for a AAA team a few times per year, and he has told me that even though these guys are the best around, since most of them have pitched in the big leagues, they're doing good to keep most of their pitches within 6-12 inches of his mitt consistently. He's a juco catcher, and those guys don't come close to this accuracy, but some of them still throw low to mid-90s. That is a dangerous combination if not used wisely.

I don't have professional experience myself (other than scouting)but am friends with a number of professional players and a few family members who played in MLB, both position players and pitchers. I've discussed this subject in the duck blind with a number of these guys and they tell me that hitters don't get intentionally head hunted except in very extreme circumstances. As much as the guys I know don't like Barry Bonds (most of them can't stand him), they all have total respect for what he's accomplished; and most of them consider him the best player they've ever seen and best of all time.

Unless you sit in a dugout or play on the field, you really can't appreciate what it is like to have one of your guys hit someone or get hit. I've been there on both sides, as I coach summer teams that have averaged 10 kids a year going to D1 college ball for the past few years, and have averaged a couple kids getting drafted each year. In the last two years, I've had 6 pitchers who's fastballs run 90-96 depending on the kid, and I can assure you that nobody in their right mind is going to instruct a pitcher to bean a hitter these days. Throwing inside is different than intentionally going head hunting. In this day and age, it can get you landed in court with criminal or civil charges, even at the professional level if it can be proven it was intentional and someone is seriously injured. Worse, it can get someone seriously injured or killed.

Mike Coolbaugh, the first base coach of the AA level Tulsa Drillers, was killed a few days ago by a line drive while coaching in a game. Yeah, it was a batted ball, not pitched, but the result was the same...and extremely tragic.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Back to the original question. Why don't more pitchers throw at Barry Bonds? Only one thing would constitute throwing at Bonds.

Let's say for example, the Yankees and the Giants are playing each other. Derek Jeter comes to the plate and the Giant pitcher intentionally throws at and hits Jeter. I guarantee that if Bonds comes up to bat the next inning, he is getting drilled.

Would a pitcher throw inside to brush Bonds off the plate? You bet. Might one of his pitches get away from him and clip Bonds? You bet. But throwing at Bonds just to throw at him and bean him? I don't think so.

RE: Baseball question ?????

Caelknuts, let me get this right ....You coach a team that produces an average of 10 D1 PLAYERS A YEAR????Thats NCAA Division 1???

RE: Baseball question ?????

LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-07 AT 11:56PM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-07 AT 11:23?PM (MST)

Yeah, we've got I think 20 players over the past two graduating classes who've gone on to play NCAA Division 1 baseball, a bunch more who play juco ball or at lower collegiate levels, and six of our kids who've been drafted in the last three years. Some have made it, some have dropped out or been injured and some turned pro instead of going to college. Don't mistake this as me claiming credit. I only have them for a few months each summer, but I said it to give perspective that I'm around a lot of quality baseball players and know a thing or two about higher levels of baseball and head hunting. The acheivements of the boys are theirs entirely, not mine.

For more acheivements by my guys, over the last four years, three of them have been selected by USA Baseball for tryouts with the Youth National Team, and another two had tryouts with the Junior National Team. One boy made the JNT and played in the Jr. World Championships two years ago, in Mexico. In fact, if you subscribe to Baseball America, you can read a very nice article about him in the current issue, under the Low A ball report. Lars Anderson is the young man, and he's got a very bright future as one of the top prospects in the Boston Red Sox organization. He played with us over three summers. Another young man, David Dinelli, just signed with the Astros as a sixth round pick last month. David played with us over 4 1/2 summers. We'd probably have a few more of these caliber players, but we've only gone through three graduating classes out of high school so far.

Our class of 2008 is going to be fairly weak, with only a few players moving on to the highest levels, but look out in 2009. We've got kids who are already drawing serious interest from some of the top D1 programs in the country, including a few Pac 10 schools. I'm very excited for what some of them might acheive.

I had to jump on here an edit this a bit for my boys, cause I'm pretty darned proud of them. The schools they've played at, or will be at this fall, include: Santa Clara, Fresno State, Sacramento State, USF, San Jose State, Arizona, UC Irvine, UOP, Cal, Oregon State, Hawai'i, UC Davis, Cal State Northridge, St. Mary's, Long Beach State, and some smaller schools. The juco kids mostly play at some of the top schools in California, Sacramento City, Cosumnes River, Sierra College (my son among them) and also American River and Butte.

RE: Baseball question ?????

That is AWESOME ! I love college softball , and the only thing I love more is college baseball.
My daughter played in a college show case over the 4th of July in Denver , but got little game time as she is only 14 playing with 16 and 17 yr olds , and the NCAA cannot even talk to her until the summer of her Jr. year. I however can be, and have gotten to speak to 1 D1 head coach from South TX, and 2 Jr colleges from here in NM.We've been told that more doors open once she travels with the 18U team, if she gets an invitation.Time will tell , she's so young and don't want to burn her out.We were at the college world series this year and it was great , we are U of A fans so it was a great time watching Coach Candrea win another National Championship.
Anyhow , it's great talking to someone with passion of the sport...

RE: Baseball question ?????

AS a piece of unsolicited advice, remember that at 14 having FUN is still every bit as important as taking it serious. I think way too many parents put undue pressure on their kids at too young of an age. Way too much emphasis on getting that shcolarship and not enough on letting them be kids and have FUN.

You are correct in your understanding that the way your daughter will be seen by college coaches is to play on a quality 18u travel team, whenever she's ready. Regardless of what people say, that is the best way to play at the next level if she has the ability.

Baseball's a bit different than softball, but if I can ever help you, don't hesitate to private message me, and I'll do whatever I can. I've found that most parents don't have a very good grasp of what college recruiting is like. Having gone through it with a lot of boys, I've learned a few helpful things here and there.

RE: Baseball question ?????

I was on the same little league all star team 15U, as this guy;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Joe_Hobert

He was also a pitcher, in regular season I pitched against his team, the Eagles also when he started the game. I've also coached 15U and recently had an invite to be an 18U pitching coach for the Kent Bulldogs club, an org. that has many players in the minors and NCAA. I would love to have done it, but they want you there every night and my personal life just won't allow, most of the other coaches are semi-retired. In High school, I played against guys like Royals 3b/ 2b Jed Hansen. I've recently played several years in the Puget Sound semi pro league that former ML players like the Nettles brothers and Tim Campbell have played in -I actually played on the same team the Nettles did, the Cascades. Glory days, I'm at the point in my life now I just don't get that excited about baseball as much as I've played. I injured my back right after my 21st birthday when I was in camp with Class A Bellingham, it took me 3-4 years to recover and I played again competetively by the time I was 25 but not at the level I had before that. I do have a lot of good memories.
