bad knees?

My body has served me well for a good long while but now it seems to be going to heck a lot faster than i'd like it to. A day or two after crawling on my knees under a house to do a plumbing repair, one of my knees is throbbing and swelled up, hurting like all get out to the point me not wanting or hardly being able to walk. Seems this has been the case for a couple years now but it comes more often, either side, and seems to hurt worse and the swelling & pain lasts longer than it used to.

I have and use the knee pads but they don't seem to help.

Does this sound familiar to what any of you guys have gone thru? Thanks!!

Joey

Hey sage, I know you don't care for me, but I thought I'd chime in here. I have arthritis. It's been one weird thing to deal with and treat at age 24! There was one point where both my knees were so swollen that I couldn't bend them. The pain sucked. I ended up in the ER getting them drained. Over 120cc's of fluid drained several times. I finally got on a regimine of 80mg of prednisone for about 6 months then on a sulfate after that.

Now that I have it controlled I never ice my knees or any joint that is being affected at the time. Is take extra strength Tylenol and avoid nsaid's like ibuprofen.

Like I said before, I know you don't care for me, but I woulsnt wish the pain I know you are going through on my worst enemy. Good luck and I hope you get it figured out.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-13 AT 01:57AM (MST)[p]Thanks Travis! Mine do have fluid but i don't think that much. I'm a little better once up and moving but even getting up off the this desk chair, or anywhere else, is pure Hell.

It's not that i don't care for you or don't like you. There were some posts that i believed you were talking out your rear end and i called you on that. Things get outa hand once in awhile, it did then. That was then and this is now... OK?

Both Knees Blowed clear out & still Limping around on them!

I could live with Swelled up knee's once in a while!

But when my Knee's pop out of Joint, the only thing that hurts worse is popping them back in,JFP!

What I really like is all the f'n cobble Rocks people leave under a new Crawl Space!

Hey sage,

~Z~ turned me onto something back when I had my LE tag to help me with the bad cartlidge in my knee. It would swell up a bit and it would throb just to walk and was really slowing me down. It does miracles hoss and I was able to find one on KSL for cheap. Has been a life saver for me.

There called a Breg Polarcare with a knee pad. It circulates ice water around your whole knee and I can tell you you sleep one night with it on and it will take all swelling out of that knee and you feel like you have a new joint!

SAGE, GOING THROUGH THE SAME CRAP, +1 THE OLD BODY THE ABUSE IS STARTING TO KICK IN, HAD MINE CLEANED OUT 13 YRS. AGO NO PROBLEM UNTIL NOW HURTS LIKE HELL. WENT TO THE DOC. SAYS I HAVE ARTHRITIS, PLENTY OF TREAD DON'T NEED KNEE REPLACEMENT, OR A COUPLE OPTIONS THEY HAVE A NEW LUBRICANT THEY SHOOT IN I CALL IT DOC. IN A BOTTLE MIGHT WORK, OR GET IT CLEANED OUT AGAIN, THEN HE SAYS OR WE DO NOTHING, TOLD HIM I'M BUSY AT WORK MIGHT WAIT TILL I SLOW DOWN TO GET HER FIXED. AS LONG AS MY HIP REPLACEMENT HANGS IN THERE ON THE LEFT SIDE I MIGHT MAKE IT BEFORE HUNTING SEASON...RAS

Hey, thanks guys!! Really no fun. Trying to stay in one place as long as possible.

Bess, you act as though you live with this kind of pain all the time. Why does this news not surprise me? You must be superman. :)

At first blush sounds like arthritis, BUT if you have torn meniscus and it doesn't get blood flow to heal, it can be incredibly painful for months. The only way to fix that is to have the knee scoped, and once you do you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner!

So see a good ortho to get the real answer. In the meantime, you can start some glucosamine chondroitin. I have been using it for years, and find that the Schiff brand that also has MSM and hylauronic acid (the fluid they inject) works best.

I've had six surgeries on both knees, have half an ACL on the right and am someday going to need a kneecap replacement. That being said, I don't have to take NSAIDS and ice religiously after any activity that loads the knee joint. The only thing that bothers me is coming downhill in steep terrain.

Good luck, a bum knee can really be debilitating!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-13 AT 10:45PM (MST)[p]predator, Thank You! Geeze i hope it's not that serious. The pain though is increasing each day now instead of getting better. The Dr. is probably very sound advice but i'm a cash pay and any kind of extensive work done will smash the budget to smithereens! I don't need this!

As far as the glucosamine chondroitin, i've found a source on-line. Do you recomend the pills or the drink powder?

Edit: I went ahead and ordered up the Powder. Thanks again!!

JB, you gotta be a jerk all the time?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-13 AT 10:50PM (MST)[p]sage,

Predator offers good advice. If you can't see a doc, maybe an athletic trainer or a physical therapist can do some ROM type of exam and get a better idea of what is wrong with your knee.

There isn't much difference in glucosamine products except, if you are a cheap SOB like I am, take a look at the label and see which one has less filler. Assuming that is cheaper, buy that one.

Also, I have found when I was in the business that glucosamine sulfate works a bit better.

Feddoc, Thanks for the info!! believe me, i'm contemplating right now how best to see somebody about this knee and get on the mend. I've got a Visa card with a -0- balance and a high limit, might have to break down and make payments. Nothing to be done until tomorrow anyway, guess i'll sleep on it.

Funny how it doesn't bother me near as much while in bed. Get out of the bed is another matter. I got one of the new beds that seem to be 4 feet in the air. Bout need a ladder to get up in and If i ever fall out the thing, it's probably good-bye-joe! lol

yea it sounds really familiar to me, a few years ago anyway. now i'v had my left Knee "rebuilt" and my right is in line next. Took a tumble and actually amputated part of my maniscus after that surgery the doc said he remover 60% of it and that I should get ready for a total knee. I can walk ok on it and kneel for a bit but DANG Its a pain to sit with it bent for more than about 10 mins. Good luck with yours. BTW the "rebuild" hardly bothers me at all.

Joey, I'm dealing with a torn meniscus, and sprained ACL and MCL as well as arthritis in my right knee this summer. Problem is, I have a great pronghorn hunt in 5 weeks and I need to get ready for it, followed by an elk hunt in November. I have a great orthopedic surgeon (Ken Akizuki, the SF Giants orthopedic surgeon) and after reading my MRI report, he advised that we try to treat it conservatively despite the complex meniscus tear. Here is what we're doing.

First, he gave me a cortisone shot at the end of March, and it made a huge difference in pain relief. Just last week, he gave me a symvisc one injection, which is some stuff that lubricates the joint (think of it like motor oil for your knee), as well as taking Aleve daily, icing daily and also treating it with a heat wrap every evening. I also take Glucosamine/Chondroitin, MSM daily. I'm now walking a couple miles a day, and next week I start physical therapy which should help a lot. If all that doesn't get me where I need to be in the next three weeks, then we'll do another cortisone shot a few days before I head out to northwest Nevada to go chase pronghorns.

Best advice I can give is, get out in front of it and treat it proactively. Don't wait for it to get worse. You'll be amazed at how much better a simple cortisone shot will make you feel.

Thanks CA, i believe you gave some great advice and a couple good tips there!!

Today is more of the same. It felt a little better when i first got up, not bad enough for me to call a dr. My fridge was about empty and i needed Copenhagen bad so i did the best i could dressing and got my truck started. Sparing the painful details, was able to get in and make it to our local market and do some stocking up. This was the first i had left the house since Monday and would not have done that on a bet if i didn't absolutely have to.

I got to thinking that this might be a case of Gout in my knee. Why not? i get Gout bad in my ankles and feet, have gotten it a time or two in my knee also and this feels very much like that. When under that house, i never did fell anything go out or any pain at all, it was the next day that it started hurting. So if it might just be gout, hope so, i took a double dose of indomethecine which usually kicks it in the rear after several doses.

Now the indo and all the rest of the stuff i'm taking for the pain really has my head spinning. Feel like i want a nap but don't believe i can.

A lot of this sounds so familiar.....one of my biggest issues is driving for extended periods of time, say driving from Michigan to Wyoming or such for hunting. When I make a fuel stop, dang near can't get out of the truck till I get the legs/knees moving!

Should have taken better care of my knees when i worked for Uncle Sam! LOL

If you can't even get chew, your f'd up. At some point being cheap turns to being stupid.
Spend a few hundred (these guys drive BMW's) and find out what's hosed up and go from there. Keep screwing around your huntin days will be over.

Bull, LOL! Alergic to work maybe! Actually, the plan is pretty much set, i'm gonna be a old fart plumber scratching up work until the end of my days!! I had to turn two service calls down just today.

WBob, please feel free to offer your opinion and please don't sugercoat anything. lol Actually guy, Thanks!!

Sage sorry to hear about your knee issue. I was told 15 years ago that knee replacement was in my future by a specialist. I've managed to get by and have bouts from time to time. You got some good advice with the alleve and Glucosamine. I will tell you that some folks have better luck with Glucosamine Chondroitin, as opposed to gl/msm. I get better relief with Glu/chon than I do with other forms, but you may find a form that works for you. In most cases it takes a while to get some relief. I have a bad back and bad knees and have taken it for 12 years and have had fewer issues when I take it regularly. I buy mine at Costco but wally world/sams have some good prices as well. I use the alleve with it on days of more activity and it has served me well. Of course we're all different but I hope you find some relief and I will tell you a spa may also help you quite a bit. I can't tell you how much a spa can help with issues like getting old but I use mine daily except when I'm out of town. Good luck and I hope you find some relief.....because we all know you just like to whine!! :) Just kidding, regards, CA

Boskee, Thanks for all the great info!!

Well if possible the pain seems now about twice what it has been and now it doesn't go away or feel better when i lay down. I'm about at the end of my rope. i had a few Vicodin, my gout meds, allieve, and ibuprofin. Nothing cuts it...or if it has, i don't want to be alive when what i took wears off.lol

Sorry about the whining folks. I can stand a good deal of hurts but i've pretty much always been a bit of a sissy when it gets to where i can't stand it.

Joey

"It's all about knowing what your firearms practical limitations are and combining that with your own personal limitations!"

Joey I was kidding you about the whining! I think that makes you normal. We can't stand being laid up or not feeling well and I know where you're at and I hope you find something that works for you w/o having surgery! A pillow behind your knees when laying on your back may help take some pressure off a bit! Keep taking the alleve it will help.

sageadvice I wish you the best and hope things work out for you. I worked in a industry that is very hard on the knees. So far so good but have been out of the tools for 8 years now and I hope I don't have problems later in life. Good Luck. You sent to much time on your knees. LOL

i had a few Vicodin, my gout meds, allieve, and ibuprofin. Nothing cuts it...or if it has, i don't want to be alive when what i took wears off.lol

I have bad knees too but none of those drugs above helped me and none will. Be careful taking Aleive as it has Naprosine in it.
I took Naprosine for inflamed Siactic Nerve in lower back and wound up in hospital from bleeding ulcers. Dr. told me never to take Aleive or any ibeprophine (no spell check here)as they both have this Naprosine in them.

I can only take Excedine. Trying to hold out from having surgery on knees till later if I last that long.

At the risk of boring you people, i'm going to give a little update and a request your comments further if you're so inclined.

I went to our small town Clinic yesterday. My leg was still hurting but driving there was not the agonizing tribulation that going to the store was several days ago. i drove my camper truck, a bit lower to the ground and no, thank God, clutch. Anyway, i got in to see a Dr or one very close to being a Dr, not sure what her title is.

She pretty much could not help me. She did give me a prescription for a antibiotic and one for Vicodin. She recommended me taking the Vicodin and then walking around, exercising on it the best i could. I'll be going to Susanville and get my prescriptions tomorrow. I have a lot of business to do while there, we'll see how much i can get done.

The best news is, there is still considerable swelling, water on the joint, and it's still sensitive to touch in certain areas but overall, it is hurting noticeably less as of this afternoon, maybe 6 hrs ago, and i'm walking about the house without to much pain. Much better, It feels as if it's on the mend, Finally!! :)

Do i have reason to think this may go away on it's own? Thanks again for all the replies!

Wow, gave you meds....without a diagnosis...an without a referral to an Orthho doc? That is pretty crummy. It doesn't seem that it will go away on its own.

"Wow, gave you meds....without a diagnosis...an without a referral to an Orthho doc?"

Yeah, i was thinking the same thing. I think maybe i overwhelmed her with this and some other medical issues that i'm having to deal with. Plus being a self pay, maybe she thought that i couldn't afford to take it to the next level, don't know. I went in as a first step to find out about my knee and i ended up with a rather generic lecture about my health in general.

What i also thought weird was her telling me to take the Vicodin and walk around on it, the knee, and see if it gets better. That day i was hurting much more than i am right now, just didn't seem like a good recommendation.

Again today after 10 days, my knee hurts a bit less and feels a bit stronger.

Joey,
She was probably a NP aka Nurse Practioner and not worth a hill of beans. I have had 2 over the years that would have had me in a mess with a dislocated finger and WRONG way to splint it....never will go back to anyone outside of a MD.

Sage, you may want to go to an orthopedic DR that specializes in knees. That way you will know what to expect.

As to the second issue, you may like those curves but I'll bet you if she put on her Daisy dukes and wanted to take the general for a ride you'd find the strength! I prefer curves too but some of those skinny gals can really make a man forget his pain. In fact they can give convalesce a whole new meaning:D

Joey, I'm walking 1 1/2-2 miles day, and my knee feels better than it has in months. Taking Aleve nearly every day (some days I don't if not going to be walking a lot), but the big thing is that I've been icing RELIGIOUSLY, several times per day. That has made a big difference in both swelling and pain. At the advice of my physical therapist, I'm wearing a neoprene wrap when walking, and that has helped. He did tell me to get a hinged brace for when I go hunting, so I'll get that to wear when walking in rough country.

My knee is doing better now than it has for months. Perhaps that's because I've been going to weekly physical therapy? It has made a difference.

Boskee, I'm leaning toward holding off a visit to the orthopedic DR. My knee is getting better by the day. Today, i drove to Susanville and had stops at the stationary store, my CPA, my Bank, The County Clerk to have my home Homesteaded, the County Tax Assessor to complain of too high a property tax's, my attorney to update my Will, Walgreens to get the prescribed Meds, and two grocery stores dumping well over $300 in the baskets. Sure i drove around but there was a lot of walking involved today and though there was some pain and i'm noticably limping on it, gotta say that it wasn't too bad and i never would have thought i could do all that by myself just a few days ago.

Bess, right now, i don't know if i can ever work or crawl on my knees again. It's getting better, lets see how she goes in another week or so...

CA, Lots of good stuff there in your post. Thank You!!

Sitting here, i can reach down and feel the knee cap. It actually will move from side to side and i can push on it forward and back, all with no pain at all. The last Med i took was a couple Aleve's at noon. I'm encouraged!

Joey

I have a encouraging update. For the last week or so, my knee has been on the mend and feeling better each day. Today i took my first service call going back almost three weeks. The guy who called made the job sound easy and i was needing the work so i took it.

When i got to the job, i found out that he had forgot to open his hot water side drain down valve before closing up his cabin for the winter. Right off the get go, i gots to crawl under his cabin and repair a 3/4 pipe burst copper line. Then we found two more burst pipes, the hot going to his shower valve and one the same in the wall behind the sink cabinet. I got busy, opened up and repaired those too, put a new fill valve in his toilet tank as requested, and got in a nice half days work.

My knee? feels about as good as ever. Maybe tomorrow it might start barking at me again, don't know. For right now though, i'm feeling pretty good with only doing all this on one aleve pill.

What surprises me is how i can go from my knee all swelled and hurting the major Bitchh to feeling not so bad in such a short time with basically no treatment.

I got freaking issues with my left knee too. I am assuming it is arthritis but not sure. Had a replacement done a few years ago and it felt good the first few months and since then it has been a biotch. If I sit for very long, it takes a couple minutes when I stand to allow it to get strong enough to stand on after the pain leaves. Thought maybe I had a baker cyst so when and had an ultrasound but nothing there. I was supposed to go back to the dr but haven't done it yet, assuming the worst...but then after the past 3 weeks, the "worst" would probably feel better that it has lately.
Got my son's elk hunt coming up in a few weeks, and don't want to not be able to go with him as he has some major back issues we have been dealing with, but I know I won't be much help.
I don't think it is the replacement knee as it doesn't hurt all the time when walking on it,mainly when I sit for a long time... How do you tell if it is arthritis. Been chugging Ibuprofen for a few weeks and can't tell if it is helping or not.. Thought it was, but now I don't think it is helping?
Any suggestions? The worst thing besides the pain, is with my ankle on the other leg fused, and no strength in my knee, I have very little balance when walking on any uneven surface...I feel like a damn drunk... thx

Antlerrick, That sucks. Maybe some of the other guys have answers for you, i don't have a clue about knees as this is the first time mine has really gone on the blink. There has been some awful good advice given so far, hopefully someone can input their feelings in your case. CAN'T BE MISSING A HUNT!! lol

I sure hope yours does as mine has as it's a ton better than it was that first week. I'm walking now with no pain, no meds, and my only caution is when i have to be on my knees as it's still tender.

Being off work these three weeks has broke the budget badly but i just took a good sized remodel job with a old Contractor buddy that i did quite a bit of work with in the past. I explained how it is, what might happen, my limitations, and he still wanted me for the job. I need the coin and he needs the project plumbed so maybe it's a good match but the timing was certainly about perfect. Now i have to grit my way thru and get the job done!

Joey
