Well, I finally made it back from the beautiful high country of S/W Colorado. I about had culture shock when I got home to desert heat of 108 degrees!

Had a great hunt, even though I didn't arrow the deer I devoted almost two weeks to (including scouting time). He was a magnificent buck that would gross in the low 180?s. We nicknamed him King Crab because of his 6? G4?s. However, his 19? G2?s and 12? G3?s, made up for it. He was a pretty buck that would have suited me well. I almost had him one evening when he was feeding towards me at 55 yards......that is until the wind changed! Hate when that happens. :)

During the hunt, I had seen an injured/unique buck that had a front knee the size of softball and weird shaped antlers. One side was a 12? spike with two base cheaters and the other side was a uniquely shaped 3-point that looked more like a raghorn elk type configuration. The buck was having a hard time negotiating the hillsides due to his front leg, and he just looked old and tired.

I told one of my hunting partners that one of us was going to have to let the air out of him near the end of the hunt, especially after he had "saved" King Crab from being arrowed a few times during the hunt. Well, since my partner was also hunting a big buck, I got nominated the last day. So two hours before we were packing up to leave, I hunted the drainage I had glassed the buck in for nearly two weeks. I found him feeding behind a group of other bucks, including a 4x4 that would probably score in the 140?s. I decided to leave the 4x4 for next year and stalk on the buck we named ?Cyclops?.

After sneaking up to a comfortable distance (38 yards) I let the air out of him. Definitely not the biggest buck I've arrowed over the years, but probably the one that needed it most! His teeth were worn and he appeared to be an older age deer. Doubt he would have made it through the winter.

Now the best part: My hunting partner brought his 14 year old for his first ever archery mule deer hunt. Well, you guessed it, he arrowed a nice buck! A 27? 4x4 that will net just over 150? P&Y. A Pope & Young buck for your first deer?.and at only 14 years old! Man, it took me a while to get my first booker. Congrats to the young man for sure. Hope you enjoy the photos and sorry if it's long winded. I leave for Arizona archery bull elk next week.....maybe I'll have some more photos. :)

Sounds like great hunt and tell the lad congrats on an exceptional buck :)

Looks Like a great camp! It make me very happy to see the youngsters succeed.

There is a reason they call it Hunting, and not Killing

I know photos can sometimes be tricky.....I know they've fooled me before. However, the buck is definately 27" on the dot at his widest point. His G3's flare out on both sides, making it his width more than usual.

He also green scores right at 151" net P&Y. I realize you may have some experience in "arm chair" computer screen scoring, but trust me.....photos can be deceiving. I'm fairly confident in my scoring, I guess that's why I'm an official measurer for P&Y. :) To each his own.....guess you can't just post, "hey nice deer for a young kid."

Nice deer for a kid? Hell, that's a nice buck for any grown man! He looks every bit of 27" and 151" to me. What an awesome way to start a bowhunting career. I'm very impressed and the kid should be proud, very proud. So should his pops.

Was your area tough to draw?

Looks like some awesome country. Give the Kid an ATTA BOY for me. That's great. Good job Roy.

Congrats to you and the young man. Like Chef asked I am curious about your bucks knee. Was it infected and would it affect the meat at all?

Roy
Congrats to you and the crew on a successful and fun hunt.

Thanks guys I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. The young man's success would not have been possible without the help from a fellow MM member. I'll let him remain anonymous for now.....but you know who you are. THANKS again pard.

You know, I'm not sure what was wrong with his knee joint. I cut into it, doing my best "exploratory surgery" as I could. There was A LOT of scar tissue built up......but the smell, oh man! It looks like something was jammed inside and scar tissues built up around it??????

Didn't affect the meat at all. I boned out over 85 pounds on the spot and frame packed it out. I had some last evening.....not too shabby. :)

It looks and sounds like ya'll had a sweet hunt. My first buck with a bow at 14 wasn't even half that big. Also that is a pretty unique buck that you got. congrats......

Hey BOHNTR,

Way to tell that guy off. It is pretty sad to see when people have to make remarks like that. Looks like you could've taken some other nice deer, but it shows a true sportsman in my opinion to fill you tag with a deer that it is injured. Congrats to the youngster as well. He has me beat. I'm headed out tomorrow for the last weekend of the hunt here in Utah hopefully it will turn out good and I can put some pics on here.

Congrats again,

Great story and pics. It's nice to see things work out well for a young bowhunter! Congrats to both of you on your hunt and thanks for sharing.

Ya know BO , I would have loved to hunt the buck you took , I love a big ol buck just like the next person , but those unique looking , stickery trash bucks do it for me !! I'd even get a buck like yours mounted , hes trophy class for sure , scores have to sometimes take a back seat when a great buck like yours is taken....Again g, great job...NMHUNTNUTT

Congrats to both you and the 14 year old hunter. That's a great story and hunt. I like the pics and the ethical side of what you guys are doing. Keep up the good work.

I agree.....great story. It takes a lot for a guy to travel to another state and pass up a coupla' decent 4pts. to take a "cyclops" out of his missory. Good job to you and your partners.

Excellant pics and a great story. Thanks for sharing the experience. Congrats to both you and the young man. That old buck of yours sure came out ahead with a quick kill over the lingering death he would have likely faced this winter. You sound like the kind of hunter I'd like my kids to hunt around--that is the best compliment I can give ya!

Roy,
Sounds like one great hunt filled with a lot of memories. That's the way it should be. Congrats to you and and a special congrats to the young man and his great archery buck. That's just AWESOME!!!! :)
