I am a avid shed hunter and the last three times I have gone out I crossed four wheeler tracks in places a four wheeler should not go places that ruin the privlage to use atvs not for the ones that obey the law not to sound like a a@#hole but if your to lazy or not capable to hike to find some sheds stay home dont ruin it for the ones who obey the law cause your to lazy to get out and put some miles on your feet.

amen brother, I see the same thing in some of the areas I shed hunt in. Get off your lazy tails and walk, it might actually do you some good.

I have to agree 150% with the comment here. I have been to numerous of my shed hunting spots and in the past years I have seen way too many atv tracks where they shouldn't be found. It not only ruins our privaleges as shed hunters but it's also ruining the beautiful places that we enjoy as sportsman being away from the hussle and bussle that society brings to us. If you hunt sheds with an atv maybe you should stick with the busy society we come from and keep out of the beautiful country we love. After all, what accomplishment is it when you drive straight to a 200" set over hiking a couple miles and taking a few hours to find it??? I know from experience that hiking a few miles to find a monster set or single is quite an accomplishment even if it's the only shed you find in a 4 hour + hike.

I agree. Just think how much sweeter it is to either stumble on a sweet find or glass one up across a draw and try to locate and hike to it when the terrain is steep. Its better than christmas!!!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-08 AT 11:20AM (MST)[p]I agree, but I'm feeling a little out of breath after reading this. The original post only used one period. It feels like there's no oxygen in here.

All I can say is BE PREPARED! Isn't that the scout motto or something? When I say be prepared, I mean when your 5-10 miles into your shed hunting journey and you stumble upon a wheeler stashed in the brush, have your "rocky mountain tune up kit" available. Just make sure the wheeler is in an illegal place because I drive a wheeler and always park where the road ends and hike from there. I don't abuse my privialge to ride where I am permitted! I enjoy the convienience of the machines and the wear and tear that is prevented on my truck by parking where the pavement ends.

You should probably just get used to it. I have found atv's several miles back into supposedly "road less" areas several times. I have also taken pictures of the licenses and turned them in to fish and game and nothing has come of it. One of the people that was back in the woods was a friend of a friend so I would have heard if he had gotten a ticket. This all happened in north Idaho. Bonner and Boundary county.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-22-08 AT 06:45PM (MST)[p]Father, forgive me for I have sinned. I don't own an ATV, and detest seeing them in places they shouldn't be. However, one time, about five years ago, while hauling out a load of bull elk on my back, I happened upon a husband and wife elk-hunting team on an ATV in the bottom of a canyon where they shouldn't have been (nuttin' else funny go'in on). At the top of the canyon, still a mile or so away, was my truck. Dude offered me and the load of elk a ride back up to my truck. I was weak...

What would y'all have done?

First shed trip this year was in a designated wilderness area and yep, 4-wheeler tracks everywhere they could go.

Last spring I came upon a closed road that had allways been open all year around. The closure had stopped us 2 miles before we planned to hike another 5 miles up the mountain to one of our honey holes. As we sat pondering if it was worth the extra 4 miles to walk, two punks drove up beside us backed up to the hill quickly unloaded a 4wheeler then drove around the road closed sign into the area we had planned to hike. I just picked up the cell phone and called home. My daughter looked up the Forest Service number which I called to make a detailed report! We had license plate number and all. BUT NOTHING ever was done! I checked back twice, I just got excuses about how under staffed they were with only one enforcement officer in the whole district BLAAA BLAAA BLAAA!!!
This spring I grit my teeth for 5 miles up a permanently closed road as I see old 4wheeler tracks in the deep snow. Then I get to a place where the snow got to deep for them so they take off cross country running over trees and all on the sunny side of the hill to get around the deep spot GGRRRRRR. I fixed that trail myself. With the help of a 10' long lever I planted a 500 pound rock where they will never go that way again!

I have no problem with folks running the roads with their 4wheelers some people can't walk as far as they want to the ATV's let them get out some, BUT the damn meatheads that break the laws are not my friends!

Time in the hills is always worth more than money

Way to go wyohikeit! If we all were true stewards of the land we would do our part in reporting and stopping the slugs that don't follow the rules.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-22-08 AT 09:09PM (MST)[p]my only response to you wyohikeit is AMEN.

I dont know where everybody is from but im going to go out on a limb and guess most of these stories are from Utah. Am I right? I live in Utah and its not just a shed hunting problem its a hunting, hiking, you name the place and activity problem. Dont get me wrong I own ATVs but I also know where I can and cant ride. Why? because I GIVE A $HIT. These people are ignorant a$$holes who give us all bad names.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave in a well preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out shouting HOLY SH!T WHAT A RIDE!!!

who cares if you ride or walk theres to many people anywhere you go any who its ruined it for me i would rather ride walking is boring

I and my stories come from Wyoming.
I had a boss for a while that found out my opinion of cross country 4wheelin when I found out he and a buddy had driven up on top of a favorite mountain by going through private property then up the mountain side on a big game trail. I had heard him brag all week about how fun it was to ride around on this "no name mountain" where no one else had been smart enough to go. The next weekend I hiked up there 4 miles to find wheeler tracks everywhere GGRRRR. I put 2and2 together then Monday hit him with my point blank question, did you ride up there? He tried to deny but he knew that I knew so he tried to justify it by explaining how with only 4 pounds of air pressure in the tires his 4wheeler would not leave tracks that would hurt a thing--- BS!!! That just got me more mad!!! By the time I was done he understood my opinion perfectly and that if I ever saw him up there those wheeler tires would have no air pressure in them after they rolled off the cliffs back to the road where they belonged! These ATV's have their place but it is NOT cross country in the back country!!!

Time in the hills is always worth more than money

If people are willing to break the laws to ride into roadless areas, hikers should be willing to break laws to steal spark plug wires and fuel lines.

This go's back to what ditchparrot was talkin about. This is why there is a shed season in Utah, and while we will have to start buying permits. People on ATV's are chasing the deer and elk. More discrace to us hunters, huh? If you too lazy to go for a walk to find em, you shouldnt be out there!

ATV's are not the reason for the shed hunting season! There are places I would think twice about taking a horse let alone a 4 wheeler. You guys are making this out to be a bigger deal than it really is. Oh and what about the people on foot in January and February, the deer and elk don't run from them?? Thats why there's a date.

I totally know what you mean, but for some people they may not be breaking the law. atleast where i'm from.. My family owns property along state property in utah, and how do we access it? we have to drive through the state ground to get there. I can understand if they are just sage jumpin and destroyin feed but if they are on roads maybe they have a reason to be there. all my shed hunting is done on foot unless of course i see one while i'm drivin a wheeler, then I just get off and pick it up. I put many miles in my hikin shoes shed hunting (except this year, cus i'm in hawaii, but starting Saturday i'll be back home :D)the wheeler is just used to get from point a to point b. I am sorry if the people are breaking the law where you shed hunt. I have people hikin on our ground from state breakin the law as well too. it's not always people on atv's. it's just the people who are unethical and can't follow the law.. too bad we can't catch all wrong doers. if we could there would be tons more shed hunting for the honest. there might not even be many out there even shed hunting.. wouldn't that be the day:D.. anyway sorry for rambling on.. there's my 2 cents if it makes any sense.. l8r
