LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-07 AT 06:25AM (MST)[p]Is there good public access on the west side of Antelope area 53? I will not be driving my 4X4 this year do to fuel prices and looking for access for a 2 wheel drive vehecle.
I am looking at area 53 ,because I am Muzzleloader elk hunt in Colorado and the season dates are close enough that I can do a combo hunt.

Rem308,

I have hunted that unit a few times for antelope and my suggestion would be either find a new unit or consider bringing a four wheel drive vehicle. If you get no moisture you will be fine but the second it rains, snows, or sleets you are going to be in for a interesting time. Your 2 wheel drive will sit there until it dries out, that is a guarntee. Two years ago I had to come back two weeks later and pull my trailer back home because even with four wheel drive and chains the mud was relentless.

From what I have seen with this unit it is about at the bottom of my list for good units, the oil rigs have destroyed this unit. I know I won't be applying for this unit again! There are much better units in and around the southern end of wyoming IMHO!!! Possibly something just a little further north and west. I would have to look at the proc's but it is around wamsutter, that is the area that I will be applying for this year. I had a buddy draw a 101 deer tag this past season and I couldn't believe all the good bucks we saw, one being close to 84"!

I had the 57 tag last season 07 and saw quite a few antelope on the border between 53 and 57, some big ones at that. I didn't go into the unit any farther than that so i don't know what is there but there were some good ones by the highway. The natural gas exploration down there is unreal, however it didn't affect my hunt at all.
