I am really not sure. Do you guys think they are a match.. or should I be looking for two other sides?

I posted this in your other thread as well.

One sure way to tell is to turn them upside down and look at the button, they should match almost identical. Look for something that is the same with all of them. I have 3 years of left horns off of the same buck and the button on all of them look identical, but they get a little bigger each year.

Hope this helps, could save you from hikeing around the area looking for something thats not there.

Awsome finds though.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-09 AT 01:38PM (MST)[p]If you could post a pic of both the buttons side by side.

They are looking like different bucks to me, I found a set of elk horns 2 years ago that I thought was a set untill this year I got to looking at them and they were both simular but different, looked at there buttons and they were different, I went back in there a week ago and found the 2 year old match to one of them and the base matched up perfect.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-09 AT 01:36PM (MST)[p]Man.. this is a tough one. The one side is a little smaller than the other, but not by much.
I was thinking they were a match because of the eye guards. Maybe not.

I'll go take some pics right now. Thanks!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-09 AT 01:53PM (MST)[p]Looks like 2 different bucks to me, notice how one is oval shaped and the other in round shaped. the one on the left looks bigger as well.

If you have any other sets that you know is a set you can look at them and see what I am talking about them being almost identical.

I would say that is 2 different bucks.

Dang.. I thought so after the shock and awe wore off of finding them. Now I gotta go back and hit it hard.

LOL, I know its exsiteing and disharting all at the same time.

On one hand its cool that there are 2 bucks that big in the same area, but there is also the chance you wont find the matchs.:)

I agree with Jake, I would guess that these are from 2 different bucks, may be similar by genetics, but the other 2 sides are still on the hill...

Ah, man. I feel sick now. I won't sleep at all until I can go look again.

Jake is right they are NOT a set, you bettered go find the other sides before anyone else does.

i agree, not a set. on the plus side, after your next trip you should have two awesome sets and maybe a couple more.

Happy Hunting

I agree, I think they are definatly related. It snowed about 4 inches.. so everything is covered up until it turns warm again. I think they are safe and sound under the snow for about two more weeks or so. What the heck happened with the weather!?!
Its not suppose to get above 40* for a long time. The west is a big tease. 65* one day.. 35* the next.

Happy Shed hunting to those without snow!!

I dont know what to tell you Tines, all of my sets are dam simulare, maybe not "EXACTLY" the same but they do have simular character, like a divet or a hump in the same spot. And they should be the same shape unless the pedical has been injured.

You may have found the anomlly, I dont know why yours are different.

I have two racks that if the buck would have lived to shed, you wouldn't think they were a match set both by size diffrence and buttons. Usually the color and shape of the lower portion will match reguardless.

Some times mates are very hard to put together, other times they look like the twin side.

Based on the pictures you have above, the shape of the base or lower 6-8" is not the same... big indicator as not being a set, even if the antlers are way diffrent, they still grow off the top of the head in a similar fashion. The the color looks diffrent, less 'ivory' on one than the other, not to mention the buttons are not similar. I would say that there is a 99.99% chance that you just have singles. Get out there and find those mates!

i have a set of sheds that 5 "experts" swear they are not a pair by looking at the buttons but i saw the deer with that set of horns on him, so i know they are pair but the "experts" don't think so.

so i would say that there are exceptions to the matching buttons rule.

well... i really dont know what to tell you except if you need some help in answering your question... let me know and I will help you look! lol

Hold the buttons together and then bring the tips of the tines together...they should meet up with remarkable symetery.

My GUESS is they are not a match but who cares...still great finds. Nice...
