Are the elk late this year?

I was coming home from an Archery tournament last weekend and saw a couple of nice bull elk crossing the road down by Panguitch on Rt20.

I couldn't believe they still had their racks. I stopped thinking they must be ready to fall right there as they bounded off the road. No such luck.

Haven't most bulls dropped their horns by now?

Cheers,
Pete

I went out yesterday and saw 3 nice bucks and a little forky all still packing. kind of odd I thought. Don't have to many elk down here in the desert to look at though...

You will never believe this but I was out looking for sheds this last weekend and saw five bulls together. Four still had their antlers and the fifth was already growing its new set. I also saw four big bucks still packin.

So is this unusual? I don't recall elk ever keeping there horns this long, but then again I've never been that much of a shed meister.

Cheers,
Pete

Pete, I was thinking the same thing. I went out Sunday, and found 6....all still packin' and all still up waaaay high.

Those bones are not gonna be fun to find.

On another note, I've seen a serious decline in the condition of the deer. A few weeks ago, they were looking good. The ones I saw Sunday made me want to cry-every one was ribby as hell.

I'm afraid this last dump might've done those ones in.

I just got in, Wednesday, and I did see some young bulls still packing (a couple only had one side). Plenty of folks have been picking up fresh sheds though.
