not here in northern utah yet. it depends where you are. they started around this time last year but the year before they were a few weeks later. does anybody know the reasons why the shed season varies

Here in Montana the whitetail usually drop a bit earlier than the Muley....saw a couple of whitetail big boys still packin yesterday.....I tried to use telepathy to make them drop their horns but it didn't work?

I SEEN A DECENT BUCK WITH NO HEAD GEAR SATURDAY!!!

I ALSO SEEN A SMALL BUCK WITH ONLY 1/2 HIS HEADGEAR!!!

YES,THEY'VE STARTED SHEDDING HEADGEAR!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING WHERE ALL THE 40"ER'S SHED???

You must be a better bobcat than me. I am not sure how you
knew that it was a "DECENT BUCK WITH NO HEAD GEAR"

The only bobcat wondering how to field judge bucks that
have no head gear.

THIS bobcat HAS 20-10 VISION AND AT 12-15 YARDS THE SOCKETS IN HIS HEAD WERE FAIRLY GOOD SIZED,THE BODY WAS 1/2 AGAIN BIGGER THAN THE OTHER BUCK HE WAS WITH,THE BUCK HE WAS WITH WAS 20"-22",GET THE PICTURE???

NOW I NEVER CLAIMED THE BUCK TO BE EXACTLY 28" WIDE & 6 x 5 & 22" TALL!!!

NOW THE BUCK MIGHT OF BEEN A 38"ER,HE MIGHT OF BEEN AN 18"ER,I REALLY DON'T KNOW & NEVER CLAIMED I DID KNOW!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THAT KNOWS A DECENT BUCK WHEN HE SEE'S ONE!!!

Well, I am convinced. I wish I had 20-10 vision.

The only bobcat who can't wait to go shed hunting in Altamont!!

down here ive still got at least 4 to 5 weeks, but there is always an earlybird or two.

and the wait is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!

Where i am in Utah i have been seeing three monsters and been keeping an eye on them... this past weekend they were not where we always see them. Many deer but didn't see them. They may have moved or dropped. We saw a small 2point that already had dropped one side and you could see the blood in the spotting scope. Then later we saw a few nice bucks, nothin like the bigguns but not bad that all had both horns. I think and have been told by a lot of people that it is the first new green feed that comes that makes them start to drop. I dont think it has anything to do with size... but i have just as good of chance of being wrong on that as i do being right. Just my opinion.
Later, and i cant wait!!!

WTH

Hey 231, Have you been out where that weird buck was last year? I havent had time to really do anything other than work and win coyote contests...haha

I've seen a few that have dropped already but nothing big, all the big ones are still packin. I went out looking the other day and the only ones that had dropped one side were the smaller bucks. A few people that i know have picked up a few sheds already but nothing big.

I know for a fact that they are dropping now. I went out tonight looking and i saw a monster 3 with only one side and an average buck that only had one side.

40inch, what state are you in? And what general area of the state? Some areas start a little earlier than others its kinda funny how it works. Everything I've seen is still packin!

Went out today seen 4 bucks . At first I jumped these bucks outta there bed . One was a spike, a nice 22 inch 4 point , a little 3x4 14 inches wide , and another 4 point about 17 wide . Well they start running cause i jumped them at 30 yards so I didnt see them for awhile while they ran through the thick oak brush . By the time I seen them they had gotten 800 yards from where I seen them last , and the little 4 point had no antlers seen those 4 bucks attached then one had nothing when I seen them again so I was way happy but had to leave getting to dark so im going ot trace the tracks tommorow , and try to pick them up Im in Utah . I got some pics to but they were from 350 yards with full zoom with the tripod .Got the one that just shed and the other ones kinda grainy pics because to far out . Well wish me luck .

sorry, i might get greif (spelling?) but that is why shed hunting is getting a bad name guys out pushing deer around. not saying that you were intentionally doing that but you did and then your happy that they dropped and going back out to push them even more. just my two cents.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-16-05 AT 06:50PM (MST)[p]Born to hunt,
I live in South Eastern Utah. I dont know if you have heard of Price or not, but i live there. I dont really understand why and when they drop. I have seen 5 bucks only packin one side now, i always thought that the big bucks dropped first but this year i have seen small, meduim, and big bucks only packin one side. Where do you live at?

Mooseman,
I would be happy if i saw a deer drop its antlers too. If you accidently scared some deer, which im pretty sure it was an accident because you would want to look at them, and they dropped their antlers i would bet that you would go and get them as soon as possible. Just my opinion.

Cameron,
Post some picks of those sheds if you end up finding them. Good luck.

Hey it wasnt intentionally I actually was going up one steep hill to get on top where its flat they happened to be right on top . When they seen me they ran like crazy thats what happened never even knewthey were on top of there . Never did find his sheds didnt look to hard though . But I will be soon just waiting for all of them to drop . I dont want to push them the day I went back I watched form a distance from about 600 yards . Got some pics of them put there so far out .So there kinda grainy had to use all my zoom and tripod lol . The pics were from500yards away . Well thanks for the words . Hopefully i'llfind a freshy quick got school of tommorow a free day . You guys have a good one , and find some freshies quick to show us because I got the fever .

Cameron

I went out and looked in places to see if the deer is still hanging on to them I found some pretty nice bucks, but every buck I seen still had them on and that was on Jan 22nd and usually from what I have heard is in the second weekend of Feb is when they really start dropping , but some will start sooner.I will keep going and hopefully I will find a big one.

Here in Big Sky Country also. Saw 42 whitetail bucks today, four had dropped both. The other 38 still had BOTH. Found one little fresh 4 pt, biggest buck still packing was 145-150. One of the bucks that had shed was a hog, huge bases and body comparative to the other bucks he was with. How come I find the dinks and can never see the big ones (shouldnt they be easier to see on the ground?)
Been babysitting some Muleys too. About 1 1/2 weeks ago before snow melted several bucks were bleeding, some heavily. Tracked forward and backward and everything in between, nothing. Went out the other day in same place for afternoon, nothing again. Biggest buck I saw ther wase probably 180. I have found both whitetail and mule deer fresh between Christmas and New Year, but very, very few. Happy shed hunting!

The two big bucks I've been watching were still packing as of last Sunday the 23rd but guys have been picking up freshies as of this week. I'll be heading out tomorrow to see whats what.

Well said. everyone needs to keep the deers health in mind when entering winter grounds. It happens, but try to leave very little impact. I am out there too, and yes I have spooked a few but I always try to just turn and go another direction. We have warmed up to 50s and snow is melted so that will help. Everything looks like its making it through the winter in great shape here in Mt!
