my first successful hunt was last year, Oct 5th, 2004, peak of the moose rut. i had planned on goin out that night with my neighbour, but he was busy with work. he got home with just enough time for us to do a quick hunt, maybe 1 half hours of light left. we got to my spot, and started walking, because stand hunting probably wouldnt have been fruitful that night. as we were cresting a hill, my neighbour stopped to tie his boots. i peeked over the hill, and saw antlers. ( the landowner had her cows on the property by the way) . i knelt down beside my neighbour and told him i had seen a moose. i looked again, but all i saw was a fat old hefer. i thought i was seeing things or something. then we heard antlers hitting trees. after that, two cow moose , and the bull came flying out of the trees across the field. they went down into a dip in the field, so we used a patch of bush to cover us as we stalked closer to the animals. as we got close, the cows sensed us and went running. the bull followed behind, but stopped on a knoll, staring at us.
he was 50 yards totally broadside. my neighbour had just bought his new bow not long ago, and forgot he didnt have a 50 yard pin. he was the first to shoot, and he missed. i nocked an arrow, and let fly, but missed 3 inches low. i quickly got another arrow, and this time it hit is intended target, perfect double lung. he went 50 yards further, and the rest is all a great memory
heres a picture of my moose, unfortunately we did not get field photos as by the time we went and got ropes and flashlights, it was too dark for pictures.

peak of the muley rut in alberta
i had slept in that day, and arrived about an hour later than i had hoped. i got to my stand, but it was situated near a bedding area, and i knew i wasnt goin to see any movement from it. so i decided to do some spot and stalk hunting. i was about 20 yards from where i killed my moose, when i looked up and saw ANTLERS in the trees, the sun was shining on them, and decided that i was goin to go home with a deer before that day was over. i tried stalking closer to the buck, but i did not see the bedded down does that the buck was tending to. they spooked and ran up and over the hill. i walked slowly to the hill, and spotted the deer a good 600 yards away. i had my binos with me and saw them meeting up with another herd of does, and two bucks jumping the fence not to far away from them. i made a wide circle around towards the deer in order to keep the wind in my favour. i was getting close to the deer for they had all bedded down. as i slowly got closer to the bush, i was busted again. with that many eyes watchin, it was hard for me to not get noticed. all the deer got up and ran back to where i had just came from. i sat down, and waited for about 2 hours, i knew by then they would have calmed down a bit. i headed back to their current postition. i had my head down looking at the tracks as came within about 80 yards of them. i was intent on watching where i was walking, when all of a sudden, a buck walked out of the trees 30yards ahead of me. i had an arrow ready, and drew on the broadside deer. he saw my movement and was looking right at me. as he turned his head, i knew i wasnt goin to pass him up, considering i had not shot a buck yet. the arrow made a clean pass through, and he was expired after thirty yards.

it was the remembrance day weekend, which gave me the day off school on friday. friday i connected with a muley doe at 600 yards at my rifle spot near drumheller. the next day, i had slept in yet again.
i arrived at my spot about one hour after first light. i knew by then the deer would be bedded down, so i opted for a spot and stalk hunt again. as i walked around the bottom of a small hill, i heard CRASH BANG BOOM. i instantly thought "BIG BUCK", and looked in the direction of the noise and saw, a big, thick old muley buck. he knew where i was, so i waited for him to get out of sight. then i got on his trail, directly behind him.
i spotted him about 80 yards away from me, and knew i had to be stealthy to get this deer. every time he started walking, i would move behind him, using small bushes as cover. when he stopped, i stopped, and i continued this for about 800 yards through patches of poplars and willows. finally he entered some thick willows, which gave me an opportune time to get closer. as i slowly walked into the trees, i spotted him bedded down, 20 yards away! i couldnt get a clear shot from where i was, so i acted dumb, and kept walking down the trail as if i was still following him, and voila. i had found an opening to shoot through. he thought he was hidden, and he was, for i couldnt see his entire body, but with my bow being 75 lb draw, i knew at that close the small bushes in front of him would not affect the shot. i nailed him. he didnt go further than 20 feet down the trail he was on. and now he is currently at the taxidermist, and will soon be on the wall, as my second buck, and first real wallhanger.
