Any tips on where to go for elk on the extended. I have hunted the wasatch for deer and have not seen any elk at all. We are in the bottom of the nineth and I am desperate. Any tip or advice would be greatly appreciated, any 2005 extended pics would be sweet also.
Thanks and good luck in 2006

Get up early and high with your glass. The elk are out in the open every morning and super easy to spot in the snow.

Thanks c3 I am not affraid to hike and I dont want your secret spot either but which direction would you point me.....Millcreek, Big or Little Cottonwood, Parleys, Like I said I have been all over the wasatch for deer and now I am just unsure of where to go for the elk. Thanks again for any input.

Yes you do want his secret spot (I really hate it when people say that). Any place you find elk on the Wasatch is a secret spot, and to answser your question, yes, yes, and yes.

Elknut is right. If you find any elk on the Wasatch Front Extended better keep it to yourself. There are already a million guys out there chasing the precious few that are even in the unit. It can be frustrating but just do what the rest of us do, get out there and look. Those of us who have a general idea of where the elk might be have logged many hours of glassing and hiking to find out. I know it won't help much but you can find elk in all of the places you have mentioned, other than Little Cottonwood. Look early and look high, usually on the south facing slopes. I'll be out there looking too. Sorry...

Thanks elknut, and its not his secret spot that I want its yours, so fess up, ha ha. I have spent the last few days up parleys and lambs behind the scope and have not seen anything. Just a little desperate w/ only 10 days to go, but hopefully time and dedication will pay off.

derslyr,

Keep in mind you are hunting a small group of elk, past Nov you will see the same heard split into cows and even smaller groups of bulls. Don't expect to see Wasatch elk scattered over several ridges like deer. Last week I glassed a good old boy not more than 1/4 mile off the road in lambs, in fact I'd bet he is still not far from that same spot - not visible from the road.

Also - extend your view - look miles away, as far as your spotting scope will provide you. You may be suprised what you find.

Good luck.

I had a little time between classes today so I ran up there and found two small herds of elk. The first group had about eight or so in it including two small spikes, the second only four. No branch antler bulls. I also saw a ton of deer including two nice bucks. The animals are out there, just get out and look. There were a handful of guys hiking around up there today too, which surprised me for a Wednesday. I will be up back there tomorrow and Friday to see if I can put a decent sneak on something then I think I'll be done for this year. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-05 AT 01:19PM (MST)[p]Did anyone have any luck over the weekend? I wasn't able to go last week due to finals but I am planning on hitting it one last time this Wednesday. I heard that it was a zoo up there. A buddy of mine was up there on Saturday and found a few elk to chase, only problem was the two dozen other guys that went after them too. Ah the Wasatch Extended... gotta love it!

Well, the extended just ended a few hours ago. I was finally able to spot a small five point bull bedded all by himself in the middle of some scrub oak. After a long stalk, with bad wind, loud snow and a deer or two, I came up empty. Found his bed, but he was gone... Oh well, hopefully he makes it through the winter and I can chase him next year as a six. Should be fun!
