Antler Smell?

This may sound weird or I may be turning hound. But does anybody else pick up a certain scent/smell before locating a fresh brown elk shed or is it just me? I can only pick up the scent on elk sheds but it seems like my nose picks up this scent that is a mixture of dirt, sap, and elk. I pick up this smell and Immediatley I know i'm gonna find rack(s), and it almost drives me nuts if I don't locate something because I know i'm close!?

Is anybody else infected with this odd symptom?

I don't think I have ever smelled a shed and then would one, normally you can smell the elk, and you know that you are close. Plus if you find beds you can tell if they are bulls or cows. Hope your nose don't fail ya this year.

The fresh ones do have a scent to them, but I have never followed my nose to one. Usually see them first.

I know right after you finda very fresh muley deer shed you can smell them . My friend always scrathes the pedicle with his nail and smells his freshies . lol .

Once the Storage room is filled with elk sheds, you can smell them all throughout the house!! Especially on warmer days. The smell is really strong if you close the door for a few days!! Nothing else smells like a fresh shed!

HM,

oh yeah? how about the smell of a fresh cut Christmas tree?!?! they always smell like the fresh sheds i find...nice and piney :)

i love the smell of fresh elk sheds. i can smell them very distinctly at home, but i don't think i have ever smelled one before i found it. i think what you are smelling is the elk that have been inhabiting the area you shed hunt.

any way are you a pointer or a retriever? if you are a retriever you can go shed hunting with me.

I can smell them very well, and love it, but don't think my nose has ever led me to one.

My nose has never taken me to a shed yet. However, I guess what I was trying to say is I seem to pick up this scent when I know I'm close. You see around my parts, you really can't glass up the sheds before you pick them up....you gotta do a lot of walking before you find anything. A couple of you are right when you talk about the scent shed antlers make when they are in a storage room. When you pick up your next fresh elk antler, take a wiff, doesn't it smell like dirt, sap, and elk put together??? I distinctly know the difference between the scent of an elk and their shed antlers, so rest assured I am not just snarfing out the elk scent. Am I gifted or cursed?

I'd say your what we call cold nosed. How well do you do on say a three day old lion track???????? lol
Good luck

Well, if the lion has an elk antler attached somehow, I think I'd do fairly well!!! However, I might be a bit on the slow side compared to a canine.
