Antler Shelf Pics (shed antlers)

This is a shelf I just built in our soon-to-be son's room using whitetail shed antlers. 2 of the 4 antlers were bleached white due to age, so I stained them. They would have turned out great if I hadn't screwed up and used a wood glue (to fill in cracks in the antlers) that didn't take stain...I ended up having to re-apply to certain areas (inside and outside of main beam mainly) and the end result didn't look as natural as it would have if I hadn't screwed up. I used a method posted by Browtine on this site.

Anyway, I'm pleased with the end result b/c it was 100% my idea and work...oh, and it came out level!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-03-07 AT 01:45PM (MST)[p]Very cool indeed! I hope to have a "trophy" room someday and that will definitely be a part of it if you don't mind. One thing though. Did you wind up having to trim the end off the one on the back of the door? It looks like the door is going to stop on it and we all know how little boys open doors!

Cookie2, I'm glad you like it. You may want to use a different method of attaching the shelf to the wall than I did. I used 1" x 1" corner trim to create a lip for the shelf to rest on in addition to the antlers (glued the shelf to the trim). I think the shelf is plenty sturdy for what we'll use it for, but it could be better b/c that trim isn't very stout. The antlers are anchored to the wall studs in 2 places each & they'll support most of the weight on the shelf, but it could be better for anything stacked against the wall.

And you are right, I'm going to install a door hinge stop b/c the main beam is in the way of the door when it swings open. It broke my heart having to cut off the brow tine of that one and part of the g-2's on all of them...so I'd rather the door not open all the way that have to cut off more! The one in the way of the door was killed this past year and scored 172 and change, but you can't tell by the way I hacked it up...kinda a shame.

Those are sweeet! I think they turned out pretty good man. Thats a really good idea.
