Anybody have any info on this hunt?
I know it starts next week and it's a special draw only. has anybody done it? Is it worth the $25? Did you find any? How many people put in the drawing? How does the drawing work?

I have searched all over the net for info and I can't find anything. I called the State Park and they gave me basic info and that's it.

I would appreciate any info, feel free to PM me.

Thanks,
HJB

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-10 AT 01:28PM (MST)[p]i just got all the low down on it and ill be there, school and work will understand

Ya i've done it, it's stupid. Don't waste your time. The park rangers get all the good ones, think about it, if you were a park ranger wouldn't you.

I did it the first year they opened it up. I found maybe 4-5 decent whites and some trashy older stuff. Quite a few of the bucks were still packing that year.

To explain what kind of shed hunt it is I would like to make a surfing analogy. The "soul surfer" is the kind of guy that goes out to enjoy the rush of catching and riding a wave. He rides a longboard and just enjoys catching a good wave in the peace and solitude of the sea. The "short border" has all the latest gear and a smaller more maneuverable and aggressive board. He wants to shred the waves to pieces pulling all kinds of tricks and moves. For the short boarder part of the enjoyment is the competition with other surfers. They both enjoy the same thing, but they just enjoy it differently.

I am a "soul shedder" and for me to feel like I am in a race or contest with other shed hunters takes away from the experience. I would rather go look for sheds on some crummy general season area all by myself without the time constraints and competition. Some guys enjoy the race and competition. There are big sheds on the island, but it isn't my idea of a good time.

Good luck to you.

Its alot like the jackson hole derby. Lots of people, Hike all day trying to beat others to the best spots and maybe if you lucky find a shed or two. If you are lucky...
I also think the park rangers pick up alot of the sheds. in fact I have seen his sheds.
The worst part about the damn island shed hunt are those freaking little biting flies. I swear they itch for weeks.

I'm the exact same way. I have some buddies I go with occasionally that practically run the whole time trying to find everything first. I like taking my sweet ass time and actually enjoy being out

Why even talk about this topic on this forum. You guy's must like the competion. Keep talkin.

well this is a SHED HUNTING forum, and it is a SHED HUNTING DERBY....it will be my first year going i think it will be fun to just try it out. could be a horrible experience could be fun who knows but like the others i like to take my sweet time, but i think it would be fun to just be out and try something new and whats the difference between it and shed hunting any public land anyways ive seen plenty of guys foot racing it to get the best spot or even fighting over who spotted the horn first. maybe well find something big enough out there that would actually be worth fighting for haha.

>YOUR A GENIUS HJB... WHO LEAKED
>IN YOUR CHEERIO'S

It's a public event and everyone has the right to know about it. So quit being a selfish bass turd and let some of your fellow shed hunters have some fun looking for sheds.
It's not just your Island!

I have been talking to a few guys that go every year. It sounds like the guys that are hired to patrol the Island stash the sheds and then go get them on the opener. I have heard this from a few people. Not sure about the rangers, but I do know there was a ranger about 10 years ago that poached about 7-8 Trophy bucks.
I think I'll go check it out and see for myself. I think it would be fun to hike around the island looking for sheds.
Thanks to those who gave input.

I've talked to several of the rangers out there over the years, and I can assure you they don't go around stashing sheds. Most of them think we are idiots for even looking for the bone. There a few people volonteering for trail patrol that find sheds but the majority of sheds picked up illegally are done by guys riding horses or sneaking off the trail. There has been speculation that the horse concession guys pick up a lot of sheds, and some say they have witnessed this, but it has never been proven.

The island is huge and can easily hide the 100-150 brown horns that hit the dirt each year. It's a fun place to get out and stretch the legs. take a camera and take some awesome scenic pics. Better than 50% of the hikers will never find a shed, and come off the mountain feeling like they got their butt kicked and wasted 25 bucks. Have fun and post pics when you're done.

Thanks, that's exactly the info I was looking for. Sheds or No Sheds, it will be fun to get out and hike around on an acutal Island. I don't know anybody that finds sheds everytime they go out. It's a sport where you have to "Accept" the results instead of "Expecting" them.

Thanks for clearing up the "stashing" rumor too.

And now that you have let everyone in monster muley land know good luck gettin a tag GENIUS!!! And if your so ept to "just go and check it out regardless" then why dont you just do that, and PIPE DOWN GENIUS!!! Just like MWMA and the HEWMA your bright self spoke of in other topics, just keep exposing all your areas and wonder why in gods great country you run into FELLOW shed hunters around every bend... Cant fix stupid (Genius) i guess. HERE'S YOUR SIGN!

i think sometimes guys on here lose the sight of what horn hunting is all about. being out enjoying life sharing the good times with friends and family, dont come on here raining on everyones parade cause you feel you own your shed hunting spot.. unless of course it is privatly owned by you... go out have fun and share your stories on here and keep your spot a secret. and stay out of daniels canyon cause i own it.LOL

I wonder if basin bucks would talk this way if everyone knew his name.....you know, a little bit of accountability? I highly doubt it.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

LAST EDITED ON Feb-27-10 AT 12:19PM (MST)[p]Come on fellas , since your all good buddies lets post all your killer spots on the SHED FORUM and see how great this year will be, if its all about the spirit of fun and enjoying it with 'oh EVERYONE then lets hear it ! LIECABUCKS= "D-BAG" ROBILAND="D BAG" AND WELL LOSTANTLER YOUR NAME "LOSTANTLER" SAYS IT ALL. ya know it would be nice to still find an antler when i go out and not a few D-BAGS. Im done, somebody is always trying to screw it up for the next person. Good job guys. If you found gold in a stream bed would you point that out to??? Did'nt think so... Think about IT!!! Man genius's at the helm!!

All this bottled up anger over a stickin ol' piece of bone?? You sure give shed hunter's a good name. Geeze people, think about it. It's just a bone.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-27-10 AT 04:20PM (MST)[p]If antelope island is your best spot basin buck well my suggestion would be start finding a new place, i went out today and found 8 fresh and 1 white, good day cant always have those. let people talk, its called a FORUM its what people do talk and discuss. unless basin buck would like to go create his own website and change his name on monstermuleys to debbie downer cause every post he puts its negative to other people.

Antelope Peninsula is like shed hunting a High Fence ranch! Oh wow mommy look what I found. Its a 250 inch single from a high fence Island. oops Peninsula. WOW

A wildlife Managment Area (WMAs) is an area purchased and managed by the state for big game winter range. It doesn't take a "Genius" to figure out that there SHEDS on a winter range you idiot. I love to see scouts and kids get out and find sheds, I think its great to help people find areas to shed hunt. You won't see me giving out specific canyons or areas inside WMAs on a public forum, but these WMAs are for everyone's enjoyment my friend.
As for Antelope Island, I hope there are thousands of people that apply for a permit! That's just more money for the state and the island to help manage and increase big game numbers.
It's the selfish wieners like you that ruin the sport for everyone. If you don't like sharing info or helping people out, then you are pretty much useless to this forum. So do us all a favor and take you nasty selfish attiude and go elsewhere.
HJB

BTW- I'll have 20 scouts with me on one of the WMAs you mentioned on the opener, so please stay home. I dont want some raging fool yelling at my scouts for getting out and enjoying the outdoors.

Hey everyone, there is an elk shed derby near Yellowstone......damn, let the cat out of the bag....

"genius's"? hahahahahahahaha

Good luck and have fun guys, Post up pics.

It sounds like basin buck ownes every good spot here in Utah.
BTW, basin buck, I am an amature shed hunter, in 4 years of going out, I have found 3 elk sheds, 1-6 point, 1 5-point, and a 3 point. 2 deer sheds, a little 3 point and 2 point. So I have no secret spots to give to YOU BASIN BUCK. I love getting out. I have spent several days and dollars with no return, but still have fun. SO DONT COME ON HERE AND $#!) on our parade for trying to be "FELLOW SPORTSMAN". I would love it someone invited me on a trip or told me of an area that was good (HINT), BUT it is a forum. people ask for info and some people share or choose not to share. Thats fine.

Like mentioned before, go start your own web page and dont tell any of us about it because none of us will visit it. Keep it to your self. Post pics of your self and tell your self what a bad ass you are. Show your self how cool you are. Look who is the Deuch Bag NOW!
