Antelope Draw Question???

If you pay the special price and don't get your first choice, do you draw your second if the Special tags didn't all go to other Special applicants on their first choice??

Guess the question is: do those 40% of the tags remain till their gone before they are put back into the random draw.

I was looking at a unit that had approx 80% draw odds random draw but NOBODY applied for the Special there according to Huntodds. Now I was thinking I could apply for a better unit and if unsuccessful, get the second unit AND a point.

Just want to figure how the draw works for 2nd choice on special price tags.

Its lots of $$$ when you compare the price of 2 random draw apps and a youth app versus 3 special price apps.

That's the thing about you cali, you're a thinker! Keep us posted on what you find out.

I don't know why your concerned, you'll be too busy with a WY elk tag anyway ;)

Califelkslayer i have been wondering the same thing.I put in the special draw for deer and my second choice (a limited draw area)has had tags left over in the special draw the last 2 years.I don't know the answer.

I called fish and game this morning.I don't know who is more confused me or the lady i talked to.She said they changed things around for the draw this year but she wasn't sure of all the details. So it's clear as mud. I'll try to call a different office when i have time.

I was considering the same thing. I talked to a feller this morning about the same thing and I got severely confused because he said I would not draw a hunt on a second choice that ended up having leftover tags???? I think WY is why they invented hunt bookies. LOL

Thanks for your help, seriously!! I'll give them a try too. Maybe we can compare what they tell us and go with majority rules. I'm figuring $600 to apply girlfriend, her son and me random, $1400+ for the three of us Special so I guess I really need to know.

WestFork, almost hope I miss Wy 31-1 this year. Gonna burn 13 points in Colorado archery and have refigured NM to where I have at least 50% chance of drawing early Oct elk tag. Trying to fit Wy antelope in there between Co and NM elk. If this works out, I'll be outta Kali for 5 weeks.

I talked to fish and game last week, 1 hour on hold, transferred to two different people, but ended up with someone who knew their stuff.

In 2007, Wyoming issued tags to the individuals with the most points first, including second, third choice, before moving down to the group with less points. This meant if you had one point, you had a chance to draw your second or third choice, go hunting, and still gain an additional preference point. This is the main thing they changed for this year. This year, they will draw all the applicants who put in for a particular unit as their first choice before going back to second choice applicants to award any leftover tags.

In my case, we will put in for a special antelope tag in a very difficult unit to draw as a first choice, then in Unit 37 special tag as a second choice. Based on last year's draw stats, we will not draw our first choice, but will draw our second choice, and will also add another point, giving us three.

If there are leftover tags after all first choice applicants have been filled, they will go back to the second choice applicants, and work down through the points people til all tags are gone.

For many units, it will be possible to draw a second choice Special antelope permit, since most non-residents seem to be going with the regular draw.

Hope that helps.

any points cost 50 bucks so draw your 2nd choice and add a point do you still get charged the $50?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but there is no way to apply for a second choice while paying the regular price if you apply for the special for your first choice. In other words, why pay the special price for a tag you may not need to shell out that kinda cash for, or perhaps that could be drawn as a leftover? It'd be nice to have the option of applying for first choice, paying the special, and then paying the regular price for the second.

Himtnhntr correct once you pay for the special draw thats what your tag costs regardless which choice is drawn.

The up-side of the Special is decent chance to draw better unit without points+ chance to draw second choice and get point. Maybe I'm immune to the high price of the point game but $50 seems fair for a point to me. No license to buy in Wy.

I'm not against the special option, I'd just like to see an option to only pay the regular price for a second choice.

In many instances the non-resident has better chances of drawing their first choice in the regular drawing versus the special drawing because everyone automatically assumes there best chance is in the special drawing so you have the majority of applicants applying in the special leaving the regular with less applicants.

Some people pick up on this so the trend changes from area to area each year.
