Its going to be a very tough Idaho year as the numbers of game is way down. Friends and outfitters aren't seeing the deer and elk. Makes me wonder if we have another long winter what the DWR will do.

they are not going to feed if that is what your asking. Unit 45 has a burned out winter range and the only feeding that will go on there is to keep them off the hiway. Ron

So...you asked and answered your own question in only 2 posts. Wow thats impressive!

Nobody is seeing the #s of animals anywhere on the west side of the state...F&G will raise the cost of liscenses & tag fees for residents..extend the seasons & raise the bag limits !!! cause they are Genius's

after 4 days of humping it up and down hills and not seeing any elk at all in an area 10 years ago was an opening day chip shot i bagged it. not going to waste vacation time when there isn't jack sheet up there. will try later in the month. didn't even see a doe, coyote, rabbit nothing. biggest animal i saw was a chipmunk. and he would only score around 4 b & c points !

i am getting discusted with the hunting . i am either going to find new areas, only hunt when i get a good draw or hang it up and fish 12 months . waste of money hunting for ghosts

Gosh!! Be careful you guys, the hunter's that see deer on every ridge and elk bugling in every draw and even hike where no man goes, will soon attack you for your incompetence.

No thats my opinion and doesnt answer my question. Will try to get involved like I was when I lived a few years in Utah.

I agree that the numbers of animals are down. we saw plenty of elk during archery, but the deer numbers are pretty dismal. my family used to always hunt unit 40 for forked horns, but i can't justify shooting a two year old deer when there are fewer big and mature bucks left than ever. in the any buck units, i won't shoot an immature buck. the fish and game will figure it out eventually, but they are about 15 years behind on average.

There won't be a tag reduction this year. In fact I am going to say with almost 100% sureness that there will be depreciation hunts this winter in unit 45. Ron

You guys didn't expect to see as many deer as last year after the winter kill right? Wyoming and Colo have reported the same issues over the past bad winters.

Yes let's hope that this winter does not provide a second dose of poor survival. Good thing is that most winter ranges are in good shape going in, no drought conditions.

If fish and game won't cut back on tags how about we all do it ourselves. What do you say guys, let's call it a year for the sake of next season. Set an example for those idiots at Fish and Game. Matter of fact, start a rally down at fish and game and burn your tags!

Anyone? Anyone?

OK at least I will not shoot one unless it's a big one, save the little ones.

Been doing that for years "whitetail only", where have you been!! F&G should get rid of all late hunts, "after nov 1", in areas where needed to start with!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-11 AT 01:44PM (MST)[p]Tell you what.. i just got back from a deer hunt and saw more big bucks than i have ever seen. All were 180"+ and saw around 20 head that hit that mark in 5 days of hunting. Im not being sarcastic or argumentative. Just the facts. Doe's were not in short supply either. Are some units worse off than others, yes. But, there are still areas in idaho with big bucks in big numbers.
I did notice one thing though. Lots of monster 3 points. If anything, i think there needs to be some 3 point only hunts to get rid of the genetic flaws. There aren't alot of hunters that will take a 3 point in an area known for big 4's. I know i saw way too many 3 points that will never fork into 4 points. I am not a fan of the 4 point or larger hunts. I would support a 3 point only hunt. And get rid of all the doe hunts. Just my opinion and what i saw this year.

BS meter is going off the chart... 20 180" bucks in 5 days of hunting? RIGHT

Did you shoot one of these "180" deer?

if you want you can tell us what unit and where you were hunting and we will judge for ourselves.

-100
im not bull shiting anyone. And yes, i did. Was it a general unit? No. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean they aren't around in high numbers. I don't stretch the true nor a liar. Forget it. You've made up your mind there aren't any deer. Fine with me. And yes, i did. He is 183". I'll probably never have the tag again.
I don't know why such ignorance and sarcasam. One main reason why i rarely post here. I get really sick of the rude comments. Have a nice day.

Hey dreaminbouthuntin;
First of all congrats on the buck lets see some pictures!

Secondly, you should expect to get some people calling BS and giving you chit, when you hop on a thread where people are complaining about lack of animals and brag about all the trophy animals you saw WITHOUT MENTIONING you were in a draw unit.
I mean seriously dude, what did you expect.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-11 AT 02:45PM (MST)[p]Ok I just got back from hunting. My partner and I went in 7 miles with 47 to 50 lbs each in packs. Saw moose and a few billy goats. There was no deer seen and 2 different wolf packs sounding off. One pack was above the ledges tbat should have held deer and another pack by the closest tall peak. We left and hiked out in the dark. Some of the best deer country in Idaho right by Wyoming but the wolves and winter left nothing.

CHECK OUT ( IDAHO MULE DEER RECOVERY PLAN ) ON FACEBOOK UNDER CAUSES...WE ARE WANTING TO DOUBLE THE POPULATION AND INCREASE THE AGE OF OUR BUCKS. MAIN FOCUS RIGHT NOW IS ON THE GENERAL UNITS.
IF YOU AGREE WITH THE PLAN , BECOME A MEMBER AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS. WE ARE ALMOST TO 500 MEMBERS IN A VERY SHORT TIME.

HOPE TO GET THE IDAHO FISH AND GAME ON BOARD SOON.

KEY POINT -
1 ) STOP HARVESTING THE FEMALE DEER , THEY ARE THE ONES THAT MAKE THE BABIES

2 ) STOP HARVESTING THE FORKY'S,,, 3 POINT OR BETTER

THIS PLAN IS NOT PERFECT BUT IT'S A GOOD START AND SOMETHING WE CAN BUILD ON.

Whats wrong with 3 pt or better Beavis? It can work if implemented to protect the younger age class bucks and allow them to grow up and get smarter... are you all gung-ho to shoot spikes n two points?

Mike

Here is something to think about. When a unit goes 4 or larger it creates a surge in 3 points. Why? Because everyone is shooting the 4's, which leaves more 3 points to breed which equals bad genetics. Do this for upwards of 5 years and we have a problem. I am 110% all for 3 point or larger hunts or 3 point only hunts.

We have this 3-point problem in 73 after years of 4-point or better restrictions.

I propose 4-point of better units with youth allowed to harvest any bucks. The youth can be encouraged, but not required, to target 3-point bucks. Specifically discourage harvest of spikes and 2-points. I think expecting these young hunters to count points before the can shoot can be a problem, so let them shoot any buck.
