An opportunity to hunt West Virginia

A while ago, someone approached me about hunting 10,000 acres in West Virginia on a hunting lease that was and had been a "bowhunting only proposition" for the last 30 years. He was saying that he could guarantee that the area had 160 class whiletail deer and bigger. He has the information to set you up in a motel, and hunt there the entire season of bowhunting in West Virginia for $600.00 plus the cost of your out of state license and the price of your motel and food. The season in West Virginia is 2- 3 months long I think?!? So theoretically, you could probably do the trip for 1 - 2 weeks for around $800.00 give or take a few plus what it cost you to make the trip in a plane, or by truck, or car...

This is not a guided hunt, this is 10,000 acres owned by a paper mill, and you do the hunting but only with a bow, treestand, ground blind or whatever. It is a hunting lease. You have the right to hunt this bowhunting only county in WV for the entire season.

It is in the mountains of West Virginia, so you will be right at home. Whitetails that are 160 class or better, and there are very few guys that he can find around here to go down there. We don't pay that much to hunt around here, and in a few years PA will have it's own regularly occurring trophies.
I wonder, if anyone here would be interested, and as I said that I would be going to Michigan for the week of the 19th of November until the 25th and therefore will not have Internet access, if you would give me a week to see how many of you want to get involved with this, before I find out the particulars and name of the guy and his local PA phone number. He has exclusive rights to the lease, and so everyone has got to go through him and his contacts.

I will make this information available to anyone that wants to know.
Have a great week, and Happy Thanksgiving!!
Scott

That is some beautiful country! Wish I could go! What county?

As I said earlier, and if I didn't then I apologize. This was last year and since I did not want to hunt it, I let his phone number go. I even forgot his name. I know somebody that knows him, and as soon as my other buddy calls me back with his info, I will be able to get hold of him, and I can then ask him what county it was in.
Anyway, as you are the only one that might be interested, I will find out all the pertinent details, and let youknow after Thanksgiving. I am going to be leaving from PA here in the next few hours... It's 0114 hours Eastern Standard time, and nobody is up. I will get you the info when I get back... PA deer rifle season starts this Monday coming, so I will not be available until the evening, ok legacy??
Take care,
Scott

Hello any who are interested,
I should be able to get back to you by this weekend, as that is when I will see the guy who knows the guy that has the only lease. Rifle season in PA is in full swing, and the first few days were not so hot. In fact, the first day it rained like we were getting ready for another flood.
Later,
Scott

LAST EDITED ON Dec-09-07 AT 07:49PM (MST)[p]OK,
I have the information that I promised quite a while ago.
Almost Heaven Outfitters is the name the website is www.almostheavenoutfitters.com Dave Poerio is the name of the guy that you will have to contact, and the price for hunting there is $600.00 for the lease, + the cost of your motel and food. You have all ten weeks of the WV Archery season to hunt the Wyoming County piece of ground that has 140 + class of whitetails on it. Over 5 square miles of leased ground.
This is rough country gentlemen and ladies, so you have got to be in shape as much as you would for hunting Idaho or one of those other mountainous areas of the west, plus this has the added benefit, or disability of heavy timber, so you won't be glassing for miles like you do out west. There is no guarantee that you will see something every day, but you can speak directly with David about the conditions and what not. I have never hunted it, but will probably do so this coming year, as it is by far cheaper for me to do this for next year, than it would be for me to come out west, and it is only 6 hours from my house.

The one thing that did stand out to me when I went to his website was that some of the deer die from old age!! Pretty unusual for whitetails on this side of the Mississippi, to not even be shot at and killed by the time of their 4th birthday. Buck to doe ratio is 1:1.5 which is pretty healthy for QDMA standards.
I am not sure of the cost for the license or the qualifications to get one. So go to this website, and ask as many questions as you wish. He has a form by which you can ask questions or sign up for different classes, and he also offers his services to help another hunter with proper property management to yield the highest classes of deer nutrition, and maintain the herd. His phone number is also listed there, if you wanted to speak with him directly.
Good Hunting,
Scott
