Ammo shortage???

Anyone on the inside know if we can expect to have better supplies of ammo anytime soon? Whenever I go into any local gun store, or Cabelas or Bass Pro (I have both within driving distance) they are always in short supply. I have not been able to buy my "normal" ammo for my 270 or 30-06 anytime in recent memory. Are you having the same experience? I understand the with the regime change fear (Obama) there would be a time when ammo was short, but figured it would have bottomed out by now.

Any insiders have any idea when we could expect it to get back to normal? Are we still just living in fear and people are hoarding?

There seems to be ample boxes of $50+ ammo on the shelf, but the everyday ammo is still no where to be found. Are you having the same experience?

I think the $50+ ammo is getting to be the everyday ammo. It's just hard to adjust to thinking that way. It's hard to think a box of 22mag is $10+. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my mind around todays ammo prices. I'm still used to the $10 30-06 prices.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-10 AT 07:25PM (MST)[p]Yes, but plain remington core lokts are still deadly and still around $20 and there are spaces on the shelf for them, they just don't have them. They say they fly off the shelves as soon as they get them.

Mtmuley: That may be the only way!

mtn muley do you make your own powder and primers as well? I load my own as well and can cast my own bullets as well but primers and powder have had several shortages over the years.

Academy has been stocked pretty good with all my ammo and I have noticed a lot of others in good supply as well. It might be a case of that particular dealer is having a problem with distribution. When Sportsman's went out of business here last year, there was plenty of ammo to be had through our distributor, they just weren't sending it to the stores, especially the ones they were considering closing.

Here is a super cool website to find ammo and it lists the prices as well.

Thanks for the link. I guess I expected it to be an issue through hunting season, but that has been over a month and still no stores in driving distance have good supplies of ammo. The Bass Pro in San Antonio on their ammo isle still has about 30-40% of the shelf bare any time I go in there.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-04-10 AT 07:43AM (MST)[p]The companies are starting to get caught up (nothing motivates a little supply slow down like a hefty price increase). The stores out here have way more inventory than they did 4 months ago. In fact Cabelas out here took off the buying limits. Now if we can keep people from panic buying I think we're on the road to recovery.

This reminds me of the late 90's stock market bubble. Eventually all those guys hording ammo are going to get stuck holding it and prices will crash and supply will again be plentiful. But until then everybody has to pay big prices. I roll my own also, and I will be glad when this hysteria ends.

Prices will come down on ammo based on supply and demand to a point. The commodity pricing (copper, lead, brass) will determine pricing more than anything and is what caused initial price increases 3 years ago before peoples started stockpiling.

If it costs a manufacturer .40 cents to produce a round but the consumer will only pay .30 cents then the manufacturer will simply stop producing.

There is a larger profit margin built in with what has been unprecedented demand. But even when demand tapers off pricing can only fall so far.

The best bet in the future will be to buy existing stockpiles of ammo that horders (individuals) will sell for a loss as they discover they won't need it or need money even worse.

3 years ago my cost on a brick of American Eagle 22lr was $7.43 and I was selling it for $9.99; today you are lucky to find that same brick for under $20.

deadibob, Obviously I cannot manufacture the components you mentioned. BUT, Although I cannot see the future, I located and stocked up on the components I personally use in my most used firearms just before all the "shortages". So, I can make my own for a bunch of guns for a long time. Plus, I bet I'll never see prices like I paid again. mtmuley

I have also seen the shortage. I just purchased a new 7mm rem mag and was looking to purchase ammo, several big name on-line suppliers list their ammo on backorder. The shelves at Gander Mountain and Academy are pathetic.

The choice of ammo really isn't a choice, shoot what you can get I guess.

I just talked to a ammunition distributor yesterday and asked him this very question. He said in addition to the supply and demand issues with metals and ammunition in general due to both civilian and military demand, there is another component of the current equation. Apparently with CA enacting new legislation that adds restrictions on ammunition purchases, there is a period of time before the legislation goes into effect. During this period, there are suppliers in CA who are stocking up heavy on ammunition inventories before the new requirements take place. He said this placed a new artificial demand from CA distributors creating more of a supply/demand effect. Maybe somebody else knows a little more about this as I do not know the exact particulars.

Last week I stopped at a cabelas in Michigan. Place was flush with 223, extra displays full on the end of several isles, cheapest i saw was Remington 50 pack fore 20 bucks, its a good sign. Primers can again be found on line at reasonable prices, with just a little patience.

Now that prices have been driven sky high you can buy anything you need/want just as we figured would happen.
I always looked at 30-06 bullets even though I don't own one, just a few years ago they were only 10.00 a box,now I see them even higher priced than 7 mag bullets sometimes.
As I/We said before I think alot of this was planned on a "scare rumor"
We should also thank people that voted Obama in for inflated prices & high unemployment rates!
