air gun for coyotes?

Will a high powered air gun (shooting at least 1000 fps) be good for coyotes that come in my backyard. Will it kill them or just scare them. Any thoughts?

no you ain't going to kill them. If your air gun shoots pellets, one shot in the eye might do the trick!

If you shoot a .22 cal pellet out of a 1000 fps airgun you could kill a coyote. I have a friend who has killed several coyotes at close range and even two javalina that were threatening his dog. I am sure shot placement is critical on this. I have a .17 cal Gamo and shot a bobcat 4 times and watched it run off.

This might fall into the old stand by "Bigger is better at least bigger than that"

If the coyote is within 10 yards,I would say put a .22 cal. 1000 FPS on his skull cap and it will send him floppin'. Careful if you have close neighbors, a misplaced shot might send it bouncin' off your neighbors garage leavin' bloody skid marks along the way......not that I would know.

Shot placement would have to be at least "perfect". I wouldn't even try it, I've seen too many run off after being hit by much larger and faster centerfire calibers. If you're into wounding animals I guess it would be alright.

I wouldn't choose a pellet gun as my first choice for smacking a coyote , but at the same time I wouldn't hesitate on putting a pellet in one either . I know that sounds contridicting , but I shot a decent size dog a couple years back , kept coming over onto my lawn and dropping a load , got tired of it, and hammered him right in his chest with a little .177 pointed pellet at about 15 yards . When the pellet hit him , he spun in a super fast circle , yelping , as he came around I saw blood coming out of his chest , so I knew the pellet penetrated some and from his yelping I also knew it hurt .
The newer air guns are super fast and smash pellets into hard surfaces , literally , but they have their place and predators aren't where they belong to be used ....NMHUNTNUTT

Casey I don't think yotes are considered game animals , atleast not in NM , so I think you could shoot em with what ever .In other states they mat be considered fur bearing varmints and licenses and such may be required , thats usually when they put requirements on weapons....NMHUNTNUTT

If I had them coming into my yard I would shoot them with anything that I had so that my neighbors wouldn't hear it. I have rabbits that keep coming into my yard at night eating my grass and they are about to learn a lesson the hard way. I have been looking into a decent air rifle for a while now.

You might consider subsonic rounds for a .22 rifle. They shoot heavy bullets traveling less than the speed of sound so there isn't a loud crack. I doubt someone 100 feet away would even realize it was a gun shot. I use them in my back yard for squirrels, racoons and other pests and I have neighbors on either side.

From what I gather from your post I take it you live in the city or suburbs somewhere. And if you got coyotes coming in that close they aren't too afraid. You definitely can kill one with a pellet gun. It has to be a head shot between the eyes.A chest shot will kill him too and he'll run and die in someone else's back yard. I've got a 5mm sheridan pump that I bought as a kid and that thing has killed 2 coyotes, numerous pesky dogs and cats lots of prairie dogs, racoons and even a porcupine. A few years back I mounted a 2 x 7 scope on it and at 25 paces I can still hit a nickel with it every shot. And it just shoots lead pellets at 850 fps.10 pumps per shot. These new fandangled pellet guns have way more than mine.

There is an airgun made specifically for shooting coyotes. I think the webpage is airgunsofarizona.com or something close to that. They have a compressed air gun that shoots a .223 round at 950fps which at close range is more than enough punch. The down side is that they will cost you a few bones but they are quiet and would be fun to shoot.

Neighbors or not if it is a nuisance animal hit him with a .22 or .22 mag in the head...one shot doesnt draw much attention...
then live by the three 's' principle shoot shovel and shutup! who knows maybe your neighbor is wishing you would drop the hammer on the darn thing! (this is theory...I dont have first hand experience... ;-) )

I have a new airgun for grouse it shoots 1600fps and i have solid copper jackets so if u can get those copper jackets it will penetrate just fine! Hit the sucker in the head and he's done! I put those pellets through a solid standard peice of ply wood!

i have a cousin who claims to have shot a deer through the throat with a pellet gun and had it drop on impact so try a throat shot

dropped on impact??? I didn't realize today's air rifles carried that kind of energy...

If you can shoot it with a .22 from inside the house out a window and the house should trap the sound very well.

that's hilarious!!! I knew a kid that also claimed to have jumped on a deers back commando style and cut its throat.....is your cousin named Randy??? ha ha

Typo's are not a measure intelligence but hijacking a perfectly good post is. Oh yea and being a Californian isn't helping your cause. Please stay home this fall, yuor kind is a discrace to the sport!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-07 AT 10:07PM (MST)[p]Actually, my first post did nothing to highjack the thread, but then you'd have to possess the ability to think critically in order to understand my comments and realize how they indirectly respond to the original question. In fact, what I posted was a direct response to another poster (I'm pretty sure he's your cousin) who suggested shooting animals in the throat since his cousin did it. Perhaps he highjacked the thread, but I doubt you'd be able to figure that out.

Rather than get into a long, drawn out discussion with you, I'll simply rely on good advice I've heard in the past; "Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience". I know when to drop a circular discussion, so I'll just say we see things differently, for which I'll be forever grateful. I didn't realize earlier, that you were andrew_12gauge's cousin, or I never would have repsonded to you in the first place. Goodbye.

No every piece of subject matter on this site is ethical or to your high standards, Sometimes it's just conversation. Then you start calling people IDIOTS, just thought I would throw alittle on you and see how you like it.

See Ya!

Anybody that shoots a deer in the throat with a pellet gun is an IDIOT! There is really no other way to look at it. Its wrong in every sense of the word.

Anybody that thinks otherwise should not be allowed to hunt and should not be allowed to own a firearm. They have already demonstrated that they are not competent enougn to have these rights. Its like giving a retarted kid a drivers license.

Obviously most are in agreement with you that it is not wise or ethical to try and shoot a deer in the throat with an air gun. At the same time it's probably not necessary to personally attack the guy for something his cousin did. You turned it into him being the moron instead of his cousin, maybe that is why he got upset and the mods had to edit your comments.

rydeer...How far away are you looking to shoot that coyote? Could you stick him with an arrow? Just a thought. I dont know what type of area you live in though.

Shot a fox with a sheridan 1.77 when i was a kid trapped him in a pipe and shot him about 20 times in the eye's as they were glowing up at me, then he came right at me to exit the pipe and i smashed his head with the butt of the wood gun, so yes they will kill coyotes but it sure does take a lot of work.

I have done this before. I had coyotes come in to a couple pieces of meat. when his body was broadside i aimed at his heart. When i shot it hit him in the heart too. So i chased his blood and found him dead. I also have shot one between the eyes but only wounded it severly. I had to shoot it again. Try .22 pellets

For those of who want to help, when you see posts that appear to not belong, please send a "Report". That is the only way I can catch them all and get it removed asap.
Got this one.

Yes, certain air guns will kill them just fine.
I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot deer size animals in urban conditions with them. They can shoot 100-200 yard sub moa. Shoot slugs not pellets. 25-30 cal.
A lot of animals have been killed with them; elk, deer, hogs, etc.

Predators is exactly where they belong.

Two major Problems with air rifles.
1- They are addicting.
2- Quality air rifles are expensive.
Don’t have any pictures of the foxes, raccoons, bobcat (1), or coyote (1) that I have shot with air rifles, but here are some turkeys. .22 and .25 calibers using extra heavy match grade pellets. Also you want to keep them under 1000fps to prevent leading the barrels. Very fun.
