I know VERY little about archery.
I was considering getting started.
I know that Bowtech and Mathews are very respected names.
However, just today I was given a Darton Laredo compound bow for free.
It has a 65% letoff and is rated at 40 - 60 lb.
The previous owner is about the same size as me.
Is this a decent bow?
Would you hunt deer with it?
Is it something I could get started with?
Or, would you plunk down the big coin for a top flite bow?

Been a ton of game killed before Bowtech (I have one) & Matthews came along. If it was me I'd start out w/the bow ya got.Maybe go to a pro shop ,make sure you're set up right etc.
If you don't like bow hunting you're not out anything. I know a handful that spent the big bucks & gave it up.(I don't know how everyone doesn't get addicted to archery but it happens!!)

If you're like most of us,(become addicted) you can head right out next year & drop a load of cash on a new one!

HH,

I'm with Foxtrot here. Make sure you set it up correctly at an archery shop. That bow will do just fine for a starter and it will kill any game just as well as a Bowtech or Mathews (I own one). Then after you shoot/hunt with it, go out and buy a Mathews and then you'll know what you were missing. :) Good luck in your search for a trophy with a bow. Once you start it will be hard to go away from it.

Sounds like you've been given some pretty good advice already. The Darton Laredo is a good bow and if it fits you correctly, should perform well. It will not only take deer, but "bottomed out" (max weight) will take elk, bear, or any other North American big game you want to hunt.

I'll second the suggestion to take it to a local pro-shop and make sure it's the right size and tuned properly for you. Once you shoot it a few times and are hitting targets, you'll be hooked. It's a passion I've enjoyed for over 30 years now. Seeing an arrow in flight is true poetry in motion. Good luck and have fun.
