Absolute Minimum LBS for Elk

Not that I have a choice since I had major shoulder surgery 6 months ago but I drew a good Elk tag and plan to use it. I am shooting again but only on 40lbs. I could shoot more but don't want to push it for now.

I plan to build back up but doubt I will get much above 50lbs this year. I have killed several good bulls on 60-65lbs and know arrow placement is more important than anything else. I have shot muzzy broadheads for years and doubt I will change that but may consider 2 blade cut on contact (but doubt I will change).

I have no question that this setup will kill an Elk but just wanted to post about it and get your input.

I wouldn't worry. Two years ago, a lady archer I know got her bull using a 42 pound setup, carbon arrow, 85 gr Thunderhead. Complete penetration through both lungs at 25 yards. Consider the energy of today's compounds even at 40#, versus the early 4&6 wheelers, or the recurve/longbow setups.
Good luck on the rehab.

I am not real worried about it but will be shooting the lightest setup I ever have.

I have been thinking about trying a 2 blade broadhead.

Any suggestions on ones to try?

I wouldn't worry to much about the weight. Just make sure that you are prepared to make a good shot, and with a lower weight know what your maximum distance should be so that you will still get good penetration.

Magnus Stingers 2-blade in 100 grain would be an outstanding choice. Great penetration, tough head, fly close to your field points. Good luck.

I also know a lady that killed a nice sized black bear with a 40 lb compound. Got a complete pass through and the bear went 80 yards. Saw the picutre of the bear and the arrow she used (comlete with bear blood still on it). She used ACC arrows which she said gave her better penetration due to the thinner diameter while still weighing as much as thicker carbon arrows. 2 blade 100 gr. stingers seem like a good choice to me to. 50 lbs should do fine.

With a lighter set up, I would look to a lighter arrow/head maybe a 35/55 goldtip with a 75 grain head, then your speed and k/e will still be there... there is no way that i would shoot a 40lb bow with a gold tip 75/95 and a 100 gr head, just my thoughts.

A 40# bow with a 75/95 arrow and a 100grn or 125grn with a Stinger, razorcap or any good like cut on contact head will do the job to 30 yards no problem. It's got the umph to get it done. Like anything else, it's shot placement!!--ElkNut1

Here's one with a 40lb hoyt raider bow!!
