41-2 archery hunt

I drew the early archery deer hunt in unit 41-2 and I was hoping that someone might have some advice to offer. I am thinking that this is going to be a tough hunt so any advice would be much appreciated.

I drew it last year and it is a tough hunt. We spent a bunch of time around Juniper Mt. and saw more elk than deer. My suggestion is to do some research on some springs and sit on them. There is a burn south of Juniper Mt. that has some great glassing but only glassed up a few small bucks, that would be a good place to start.

Thanks for the reply. I had another guy suggest Juniper Mt. as well so I guess I will start there. Looking at the previous years results, it does appear that this is a tough hunt. Were you one of the 5 that actually bagged a deer?

Tough hunt, but a fun hunt if you don't mind the heat. Full moons made it tough during a good portion of the hunt. I hunted 13 days last year and saw some nice bucks, but never drew my bow back. I stayed north of Juniper Mtn. The springs had a lot of tracks, but I don't think they were using them during the day. Look for the shade...and glass, glass and glass some more. Don't overlook the shaded rocky areas. AND don't be afraid to look near the cattle.

The above poster is right. Look in the thick juniper where the rocks create escape routes and bedding areas. I've actually seen more bucks during August/September than I have during the November hunt. And, there are 180-200 class deer around for sure.

However, you better be damn prepared out there. First, you need to familiarize yourself with the roads coming off Juniper Mountain and the different access points. You make a mistake out there, and you could be literally days/weeks before you make it back to your truck. "Juniper Mountain" is very vague. It can be very thick in there, although, I would suspect some of the burns to SW of the summit could be holding some deer now.

hey bud ill send you a PM when I get time I drew that tag last year and I think I was the only one that shot a 4x4 he isnt huge just a little basket 4 point but I shot him on the last day, I could hunt. I hunted very hard for 6 days in that heat I shot him on the 20th of august. if you can stand the heat I would hunt early in the hunt because they are still in their summer modes. Ill tell you more about areas I spent some time around juniper Mtn but its very thick and difficult to hunt that early when they only come out for a couple hours a day.

RJ..........I think I met you around juniper mountain! how did the rest of your season go?

"And, there are 180-200 class deer around for sure."

Well, I'd hope so, the size of the unit is HUGE compared to most :)

I think this would be an awesome early season hunt with plenty of room to roam being there are only 25 tags! Not much competition for them either. Lots and Lots of scouting would be in order to narrow that unit down though, many places for there to be some good deer.

Good luck with your hunt!

Nice buck! I would be happy with that buck! Send me the PM as I would very much appreciate your input.

I'd help you but only after my buddy and I shoot our bucks:D It should be a awesome hunt I've seen some monsters over the last 6 years of antelope hunting now I've finally got the license to chase them

Good luck with the hunt. I was lucky to draw the late tag on that unit and will be spending quit a few days over the next few months out there scouting. My brother also drew the goat tag for that unit. I will keep ya posted on what we see and pray for some weather this fall to get things moving. Keep us posted on your hunt man and good luck!
