I’ve just returned from the 39th year in a row of descending into the National Park section of The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The 2700’ hike over 3 miles gets harder every year but we timed the stonefly hatch perfectly and caught some good fish.

Do you ever see other people when you're fishing? Probably not many.
It get’s sort of crowded during the stonefly hatch. NPS issues permits for 23 people a day now, there were 23 people down there this year but we know the spots where you can wade across and get away from the majority of other fishermen. It’s definitely different than it was years ago people wise. The fishing is still as good though. I went and got our permit the day before we planned to hike down just to be sure. We will go back down first week of October, and maybe in August again, and there will be a lot less people then.

Did the trip down the canyon a few years ago. The hike was well worth it. 39 years straight is impressive. It feels like you are in a world of your own.
