I was wondering if anyone had any good info on the elk unit. What type country do they hang out in? is it hard to find elk in the unit (not in farmers fields) but on the ridges. And the million dollar ? are there 340 type bulls in the unit? do not want to hear from the sucky hunters who say wolves ate all the elk and there all shot out.

Looks like all of the hunters that have the info you are looking for are of the "Sucky" type. Might not get much help. But there are 340 Bulls all over Idaho. Should be no problem for a guy willing to work at it.

Casey,
You may want to just lurk around on these sites and see how people approach asking for help before you start posting. I see that you are new here and just from the couple of posts I've read, probably young. You may not be starting out on the right foot.

Take my advice or leave it, just trying to help.

Considering fish and game cut tags in that unit and got rid of the youth tags.. i guess you can draw your own conclusions on how numbers are in 37A. Its 'sucky'.

LAST EDITED ON May-27-12 AT 11:18AM (MST)[p]Casey,

A lot of guys on here can be very helpful and know a lot about these units you are asking about. But....

Guys with low post counts are not easily trusted with quality info, especially on OTC or easy to draw areas.

This is especially true when you are asking about 180+ bucks and 340+ bulls. Frankly the very best draw areas in the state don't routinely kick these kinds of critters out.

So don't be offended when others don't jump in with quality info.

Except for the very best units in the state with draw odds under 10%, the only place you will find the kind of deer/elk you are asking about are in well hidden, hard to find honey holes and NO SANE PERSON will give up that info on a forum, so pick an area that has potential and grab your boots. But, almost any unit in the central/south part of the state has potential for these critters and produces some.

RE: 37a elk

You seem to be really focused on score with the 340 or 180. I'm an antler guy myself and would like to take the biggest animals I can...BUT, I've found that taking a mature animal, whether it is a 175 buck or a 180 is awesome anyway you slice it. The same would be true if you kill a 330 bull not a 340.

I guess you could check the record books to see which areas have produced historically. Antler buyers are also pretty knowledgable about what caliber of animals come out of what areas.
I know 37a has the 340+ potential but I don't think it happens very often. Good luck.

Sorry I am one of the sucky hunters, I've only taken a few bucks in the 180-220 range & a few bulls in the 300-340 range. I have seen a lot of our fine state & have come to the conclusion that you can still find these animals w/ hard work.

I have seen 37a go from amazing to what it is today, caused by wolves & over hunting. I have also watched this happen to a lot of other units.

If you want a 340 bull start scouting in July & dont stop until season don't be late on opening morning. If you do this 37a can still produce 340's . Before wolves & over hunting it was not that difficult. My opinion on wolves & over hunting comes from spending close to a hundred days a year in the woods of Idaho for thirty years, sucking my way up each ridge to see whats on the other side.

I am also looking for a 340 bull, but it won't be in 37a, for the reasons listed above.

just the opinion of one sucky hunter

Thanks for the info.I just wanted real info.Sometimes some of these forums get off talking about wolves and overhunting that it is no help to the person asking the ?I just wanted legit info good and bad not venting on the wolf situation .I hate overhunting and wolves as much as anybody and know what they do,Ive spent a lot of time hunting the lolo and selway and while it sucks I still can find elk .

But can you find a 340? If so why did you put in for 37A? WHat made you decide to put in for 37A? Ron

Well Casey12,
I went and gave you all the scoop on 37A in the PM and now I along with my son and two friends have drawn 37A Bull Elk Tags.
3 non-resident and 1 resident tag awarded in a group. There went 3 of the 7 non-res tags. If you drew we will see you there. I will be hunting in the areas I had described. Good luck.
