I was fortunate enough to take this buck at 0900 Sunday morning. Not to bad for a SoCal deer. Tough hunting to say the least. It is like walking around on popcorn. I shot him at 50 yards as he was tailing a doe. My arrow was tipped with an old Fred Bear two blade broadhead. The arrow went through him so fast I initially thought I shot under him. I was quite surprised to find my arrow covered with blood. I let him lay for an hour before tracking him, and found him piled up 50 yards beyond the point of impact.

This makes up for getting skunked on every other draw this year.

Way to go.....I hunt those deer every year, so I know how difficult they can be. Congratulations on your hunt in very difficult conditions.

Nice! Great buck. I bow hunt So Cal deer too, in SD County. Your's is a real trophy! What zone were you hunting? It sure looks a lot greener there than it does near me. Sounds like that buck was starting to rut. I haven't seen anything like that yet down here yet. We usually see rut activity starting in Nov. Did he stink too?

Congrats on your hunt. Thats a pretty buck for sure. Thanks for sharing it ....NM

I shot him on Camp Pendleton. Its not as green as it appears. He died in the only green patch of grass for miles. As far as rutting activity goes he didn't stink at all. He was following a doe like he was very interested in her though. Only time I have seen that is with a rutting deer. He did have two nice open gashes (that looked fairly recent) on his neck from fighting IMO.

Thanks gents. I had a great time and can't wait to get at it again next year with the bow.......if I'm not deployed.

How do you all hunt up there on the base? Is it open enough to glass and spot and stalk? Or are you still hunting through the brush? Tree stands?

I've always wanted to hunt there. I actually drew a tag in 2001, then 9/11 shut the base down to civilians.

By the way, thanks for your service!

All spot and stalk for me. I dont think there are many trees to put stands in, and I dont know anyone that hunts that way out here. It is really to thick to go busting brush IMO.

Oh yeah beaner , thanks for your service. My little sister flys out December 12th...

Congrats on the buck Brad! You seem to get it done no matter where you are living!

Thanks Jed. As you can see I'm still using that old bow you sold me years ago. It still works. Drop me a line sometime. You still living in the mtns?

Thank you for the very kind words. Serving my country is my pleasure. I will keep your sister and all my other brothers and sisters in my prayers.
