1st shed hunter caught??

Hey ya'll I was wonderin if any of you heard about a shed hunter who was caught in Utah?? I was told he was fined $2500 and lost hunting privilages for 5 years?? If anyone can back this up or heard about it I wanna hear about it, because i don't really know if it is true or not?!?

IT ALSO COST HIM A NEW PISTON & CYLINDER!!!

THERE WAS A PHONE CALL MADE TO TURN THE GUY IN THAT TOOK OUT THE PISTON,THEY WENT UP AND HERE CAME THE GUY WITH A COUPLE OF DEER SHEDS SNEAKING BACK TO HIS DISABLED MACHINE IN A CLOSED AREA AND YES IT WAS IN THE NORTHERN REGION!!!

I HOPE THE PUNISHMENT YOU MENTIONED ARE FACT!!!

I will continue to shed hunt anytime, anywhere I want to, and there is nothing you, or anybody else can do to stop me. The Fish cops will never catch me. AND, to top it off, I will NOT be guilty of harrassing the wildlife or damaging the landscape. The fish cops out flying helecopters and driving trucks and ATV's while looking for and trying to catch me are doing much more damage to the landscape and wildlife than I ever could.

1. It is not illegal to go out for a hike during the "closed" shed season.

2. It is not illegal to carry a backpack and a GPS with you during the "closed" shed season.

3. It is not illegal to kick, hoist, push, pull, move, or carry the sheds you find into your backpack and bring them back to your truck during the "closed" shed season.

It is only illegal to "GATHER" sheds during the "closed" shed season. As long as you don't "GATHER" them you should be O.K. Now, on the other hand, if you damage someone's private property like you have been claiming to have done, you are guilty and you should be punished.

LET THE FIREWORKS BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!
 
The thing that kills me about bess is how he rides people for admitting they will break the law. Yet he openly admits he will break the law himself. "as long as I say it's ok or if it goes along with my 'ethical'.....blah blah blah". Hey bess, you get you blue card yet?

The proclamation states on page 16, under section X. POSSESSION AND USE OF BIG GAME, D. Possession of Antlers and Horns, (2)(a) "A person may gather shed antlers or shed horns or parts of shed antlers and shed horns only during the season dates specified on page 4 of this proclamation".

So, I assume you can legally pick them up and take them home. Just don't "gather" them. Try to keep them seperated at all times.

For those of you who will try to explain the intended meaning of this, please keep in mind that we don't need any explanation. We understand completely and clearly what this is saying. You may only gather sheds during the open season. I'm still covered because I don't "GATHER" sheds, I pick them up and take them home.

You would be very safe in assuming that soon there will be a change to this law that makes you a criminal if you go for a hike, walk, stroll, jaunt, mosey, or in any other way, set foot on public or private ground during the "closed" shed season. Oh ya, and you won't be allowed to operate any ATV, on or off the road at any time. There might even be armed guards in towers posted at intervals along the land mined and razor wired fences that will seperate the humans from the wild animals so the little furry creatures will be safe from all of the stress of contact with us scary beasts.

Bessy, I understand that your statements weren't directed at me. I am jumpin in as a potential victim of this stupid new law that does nothing to help the wildlife. I haven't broken the law yet this year. I didn't break the law last year by picking up a few sheds, but suddenly I'm labeled a criminal for doing the exact same thing this year? New criminals are being manufactured every time a law is changed or a new one is instituted, and for some reason wildlife advocates and anti-hunting groups are happy about it.

If you were out there, YOU were causing stress on the animals. When the DWR showed up in thier truck to investigate, THEY were causing more stress on the animals. The bottom line is the real crime is NOT picking up the sheds. The real crime is stressing the animals, which the guy on the ATV, the Officers, and you were all contributing to. Then, to top it off, this shed hunter had his ATV vandalized by some knothead - a seperate crime. If this guy was using his ATV in a manner contrary to the law, he should be warned, and if he doesn't comply, he should be prosecuted - NOT VANDALIZED. If you are the one vandalizing ATV's, you should be prosecuted and made to pay for the damages.

We can't have vigilante justice. You know that Bessy. If you ever get caught in the act of vandalizing someones vehicle, the situation could quickly escalate to violence, and it could happen in a flash. You stand a pretty good chance of being found partially eaten by coyotes and ravens. If you believe in vigilante justice, just keep that in mind. You are risking alot when you commit these acts. There are alot of guys out there that are meaner and crazier they you, so be careful how you deal with them.

Your undercover Warden friend can have his opinion and he can say anything he wants, but it doesn't matter because he doesn't have the power to determine the final outcome. In the end, all he can do is turn you over to the courts and let them decide.

By the way Bessy, because this new law is so vague and ineffectual, it will probably be changed in the very near future to include a ban on any human activity in any area, public or private, that could be considered potential wildlife habitat. Of course, that's exactly what the anti-hunters want to happen. Something to think about.

OK Bessy, I get the picture. Using your scenario, lets say the sheet head on the ATV gets away before the cops get there, but then the cop looks around then tells you that you're not allowed to set foot on your lawn for a couple months because it is causing too much damage. What good would that do? It's an ATV thing, not a shed hunter thing.

I wish the DWR would use that round thang atop their shoulders and realize that their new shed antler law doesn't do any good at stopping ATV damage or wildlife harrassment. It only takes away a freedom I once enjoyed.

Don't worry about me, you won't ever find me on an ATV. I sold mine along time ago and bought a bright yellow Jeep so everyone could see me. I learned a hard lesson about going off road from an environmental Nazi wacko on the Arizona Strip. When I saw him coming down the road, I politely pulled off the side of the single track to let him pass, and he stopped and gave me a warning. I wonder which one of us should have backed up to the nearest fork 5 miles away. I didn't want to press the issue so I didn't ask.

I would much rather be free than oppressed.

If they enforced the new shed antler law, what could they possibly accomplish? I'll tell you what they would accomplish - they would stop shed hunters from gathering up sheds during two months of the year. THAT'S ALL. It doesn't do anything to stop ATV damage, it doesn't do anything to stop the harrassment of wildlife. They intentionally put this worthless law into effect knowing full well that if they could just get it through the door, they could change it later to be more all encompassing. The DWR is being run by idiots, and alot of the people out there that love our wildlife and our great outdoors are falling for this crap. They will eventually make it so that no one will be allowed to set foot on ANY wildlife habitat. What good is it to have all that we have now, if we are not allowed to enjoy it.

As much as I hate say this, I'm with Bessie on this one. A lawyer would tell you that all you need to do to learn about the issues in a society is to look at what laws exist because they reflect the social problems.

The shed season was created for a reason, and the thing is dleonard, the fish cops are not out there because they want to be, they're out there because people like you have created a need for them to be there, so don't grumble about the fish cops disturbing things because it's actually your (and people like you) fault.

Does anyone else think that the BOLD TYPE and multiple exclamation points are annoying? Have you heard of the caps lock button? I think that your's might be stuck. Maybe you should have that checked.
 
This law was created because of the 15 calls a day from horn hunters calling to complain about other horn hunters. They were worried that the other guy would find all the horns. Greed Greed Greed!! But since they closed it I have been just picken it clean. I've almost got as many this year already then i picked all of last year. There are still some nice bucks out there packin. Found one in my own boot tracks the other day. I can't wait for tomorrow. I am going out with a buddy from the DWR looking for stashers. I bet we'll find a few. Good luck everyone.
 
The law exists. There is a shed season and that is final. I have never gone shed hunting nor will I. I like my horn connected to the brain, connected to the animal.

Why not just follow the rules? Sitting here telling everyone you do not like the law so piss on it makes you look like a fool. Good luck defending yourself based on a play on words. Pick up, locate, gather, you know what it means leonard.

I am sure glad I do not associate myself with this so called sport. Kind of like riding ATV's at 5 mile pass on a Saturday afternoon.

Here's my take: It's attitudes like this that raises my dang taxes and costs me money! More DWR folks will have to hit the hills, costing us taxpayers money. You think you aren't hurting anything, when in reality you are hurting all of us, yourself included! I could care less about shed hunting and I'm with ktc- rather chase horns attached. Big picture is, it will cost the state more $$$ because of people like you and therefore less money will go to fighting poaching and other issues where the money should be going. Although, in my eyes, what you are doing is a form of poaching. Illegally taking wildlife parts out of season- same in my eyes and against the law.

I agree with what I read earlier, that the guys in utah may have to lay most of the blame on themselves for the new shed law. I would bet this new law was for the most part a response to hundreds of calls over the last few years from shed hunters turning in their competition for beating them to their spots, and doing exactly what they wanted to do before they themselves could actually get it done.

I know there were probably some legitimate complaints of fools harassing game as well, but for the most part I think guys thought they were eliminating competition by reporting and possibly even exaggerating harrassment claims while they actually cut their own Ba-ls off by reporting shed hunters causing a deer some stress.

Do the coyotes, wolves, lions, and western game departments give all game animals a break?

Good judgement is the key, If you are found intentionally harrasing game you should be punished according to the existing laws which protect game from such harrassment. More activity restrictions will only cause more problems for all users in the end.

I know of a Fish and Game dept. that has issued a couple hundred cow elk tags early this month to chase pregnant cow elk down and kill them because they might just nibble on a poor farmers haystack (its too hard to fence a haystack I guess) even though there is not a drop of snow and the dry grass is knee high. These elk are not hurting anything and they are being harrased to death by bullets and the game department's decision to make a bunch of extra bucks on a herd of wintering and mid-term pregnant cow elk and turn loose a few hundred lazy hunters to run them down. ( I say run down cause its open country and they use vehicles to attack because the elk see them walking) That has to be good for them. The dept had the same depredation hunt last year and it was -20 and there two feet of snow, had to be good for the elk to be run down by snowmobile.

Hope those that harvest will go ahead and gut the calves too, as they may make a nice veal sandwich and its not lawful to waste game animals or their meat.



The above is only opinion as expressed by a guy who has many years of scouting, hunting, and shed hunting, but I know its not fact... yet.

WOW!! i'm really impressed what my lil post has turned into:D.. it's rather interesting reading it I must say haha!!

In my two cents the law they put has good ethics behind it but I believe it's wrong especially to those who own their own land and can't even go and pick up a shed.. They're turning my own ground into a National park! What's next you can't take a piece of sage brush off your ground because the deer eat it in the winter??? Anyhow good luck to you all whenever it is when you go look for bone!!

Hey, Im a southeast Utah boy and I feel sorry for you northerns for having a law on shed hunting. I think depending on how "the law" goes this year, it could happen down here. I hope not but it depends on us (shed hunters). Why did this new law start? Was it idiots on 4 wheelers chasing animals or what? As far as the date on the season I think May 1st is too extreme. I would say deer and elk should be out of the range by mid April but I dont know about Northern Utah, and Im not a wildlife biologist.
I dont think just walking around while deer are still on the range stresses them out, but as shed hunters we should all be a little more patient and wait until the first part of March to pound the hills. I know for a fact its a ton easier to find sheds when the deer are not scattered across the whole winter range. And for the kids arguing on the computer about all this,get a grip on reallity, dont break the law if there is a law and dont yell at the guy that breaks the law just turn him in and let the DWR take care of it. Thats why we pay them un-godly amounts of money so they can supposedly patrol and catch guys poaching or doing whatever. P.S. Poachers are the biggest dirtbags on earth.
 
I've noticed a few replys to this post that are hinting that I am breaking this new shed hunting law. I have never broken this law, and I never will break this law. THAT is why I say nobody will ever catch me. I live in Southern Utah, where it currently is still legal to go out on a morning hike and pick up what you find. The new law still sucks and doesn't do anything to solve the problems.

No, Bobby. I am a law abiding citizen. But, they had better make sure to outlaw every other outdoor human activity during the closed shed season, or else I will be doing one or more of those. A guy has to do something that time of year, or we would all go crazy, right bessy? Even you can't stay home that time of year.

smarter in southern Utah. Show me where they said the law would be the same in Southern Utah next year. I highly doubt it i think the law now reads just bobcatbess has to wait to hunt sheds.
 
K i did hear just the other day it was only in Northern Utah where the shed law is enforced so i was wondering where the line is that switches from Northern to southern Utah?? Just curious how they draw the line there??

well i dont know where the boundaries are but this is the most worthless law i have ever heard. like its really going to stop me. oh, C4S, i think i know you. dont you live in the summit county area? if so then you know me.
 
I assume the boundary is the same one shown in the big game proclamation for the "Northern Region". You might want to call the F&G to find out for sure.

Let me say this - just because something is a "law" doesn't mean that its ethical and it doesn't mean that its moral. Thats absolutely 100% true.

I honestly don't see what shed hunting could possibly do nagatively to the enviroment, to the deer herds or to anything else really that simply hiking and enjoying the woods do.

To have a "season" on shed hunting ? Sounds ridiculous to me. I would think people would ENCOURAGE it - getting people more involved in the outdoors and hutning, thats suppose to be good things, not bad.

Me ? If I'm in a 16" and over trout stream and I gill hook a 15 3/4 " trout and I know its going to die ? I'm keeping it, illegal or not, its the right thing to not waste it. If I'm driving home with my single deer tag filled and smack a deer with the vehicle, breaking its back legs, I'm hopping out, shooting it and taking it home, I won't waste it illegal or not.

When the Brady Bill passed and similar laws, I'll be damned if I turn in my newly labeled "illegal" high capacity clips etc.

And if I'm walking in the public wilderness areas and find a shed ? I'm packing it out and keeping it - laws be damned
 
You sound just like me. Here's my plan:

You should go ahead and gather up some sheds in Northern Utah, then post a "turn yourself in" date on Monster Muleys so we can all turn ourselves in together. Then call the news crews and tell them about this new law and tell them that you are planning on turning yourself in and you would like them to be present to record it. Invite all of your shed hunting buddies to be there. When the news crews get there, call 911 and tell them where to find us. When Law enforcement gets there, be sure to tell everyone what you think about this stupid new law and how they can help to overturn this new law by doing the same as you. Be sure to gather up as much information as possible about how this law does nothing to fix the actual problem of habitat damage and wildlife harrassment. Be sure to call every person present at your arrest as a witness, especially the DWR officers, state and local police, news people, and fellow shed hunters. Remain very vocal all through the arraignment, the pre-trial, and the actual trial. If, for some reason you're convicted, be sure to appeal the decision so you can go through this whole thing again and cost the public twice as much money.

If we can get enough people like you and me, I'm sure we can get this stupid law overturned. - GOOD LUCK.

I took up the chance to squabble with bobcat off the MM forum. turned out to be a pretty decent guy (sorry bobcat). As I had mentioned in one of my post I beleived and needed to remember that each of us a MM persona. I guess that is my summation of bobcatbess he definitely has a MM persona some like it some hate it, and bobcat is definetly passionate about it. I do still hope to meet ole bobcat in person, at least then I will know who to watch out for when I am being a Utard!!!

I don't feel in any way that threats of violence by anyone is something anyone should learn to deal with or "get a sense of humor" about.
 
I believe everyone should have a sense of humor, and look at things from another persons perspective. When it comes to threats of violence I agree with quakeycrazy no one should learn to have a sense of humor about it.

Mortgageman: I am thinking maybe going out during March some time. I really would like to meet up & go out there with you. I have been doing a little shed hunting in are neck of the woods. You know were I am talking about "CORNER #$%&*%%" and by the golf course. I have found about 5 total nothing special, but there is alot still packing. We should go out some time.

I just agreed with quakeycrazy that Humor is good thing, but when it comes to Violent Threats we just don't need it. That was my only point I hope to see his posts soon.
